HISTORY

• In 1492 Christopher Columbus introduced


cigars to the society.

• Expedition set out from Spain reached


America, found natives smoking tobacco
bundled in palm leaf or corn leaf.

• Cigar is derived from Mayan word ‘Si’kar’


which means to smoke.
HISTORY
• Si’kar led to Spanish word ‘Cigarro’ and
finally English word cigar.

• It was promoted by Christopher Columbus


for its medicinal values.

• Best cigars come from Cuba.


REGIONS IN CUBA
• Best cigars are produced from the following
regions of Cuba:

– Vuelta Abajo

– Partidios

– Remidios

– Oriente
CLIMATIC CONDITIONS
• Tropical.

• Humidity.

• Soil – red soil, well drained and and fertile.

• Average temperature 30ºC.


TOBACCO
• Cigar is made from tobacco leaves.

• Generic name of tobacco is Nicotina which are of


two verities:

• Nicotina Rustica – Europe, Russia, Turkey.

• Nicotina Tobaccum – South America, Cuba.


TOBACCO
• Seeds are germinated in frames or seed beds.

• Transferred to fields when 5-6 inches tall.

• Harvested after 3 months when 6 ft tall.

• Harvested by two ways : Priming and Stalking.


MANUFACTURE
• Leaves are hung in the warehouses from a pole.
Warm air is circulated to dry the leaves for 4-5
days.

• Leaves are segregated as per size and colour.


MANUFACTURE
• Leaves are then put in heaps and allowed to
dry.

• Due to uneven drying leaves start rotting and


thereby starts fermenting.

• Leaves are thereafter matured in warehouses for


5 months.
COMPOSITION OF CIGAR

• Cigar consists of three main parts:

– Filler.

– Binder.

– Wrapper.
FILLER
• Filler makes the heart of the cigar and gives it a
bulk. It is also called the ‘first.’

• Filler can be of two types:


– Short filler – cut leaves.
– Long filler- long leaves.

• The veins of the leaf is removed.

• 2-3 leaves are bound together to form the core.


BINDER
• Binder tobacco leaf that holds the filler in place.
Also called the ‘second’.

• Longer leaves of the plant is used.

• Has to be of good tensile strength and elasticity.


WRAPPER
• Wrapper outer most layer of cigar it determines
the shape of cigar and also plays an important role
in final taste of the cigar. Also called the ‘third.’

• Best leaves are used.Has to have good even


colour.

• Tip of the leaf is broken, vein is removed and


binder is wrapped.

• Stuck at the end with vegetable gum.


CLASSIFICATION
• Cigars are classified by its brand, colour, shape and
size.

COLOUR
• Blonde / Claro/ CCC - Pale/ Light golden brown
• Colorado Claro/ CC - Medium Brown
• Colorado - Reddish brown
• Maduro - Rich dark brown
• Oscuro - Black
• Candella - Greenish Yellow
SIZE
• Size of the cigar is judged by its length and
diameter.

• Various sizes of cigars:


– Petite Panatelas 4.5 - 5.0
– Petite Carona 4.0 - 5.5
– Petite Lonsdale 4.75 – 5.0
– Robustos 4.5 – 6.0
– Corona 5.0- 6.75
– Panatelas 4.5 – 7.5

SHAPE
• Cigars have two kinds of shape:

– Pressed Cigars – Are square in shape.

– Un pressed cigars – Are torpedo in shape.


PACKAGING
PACKAGING
• Cigars are wrapped in cellophane and packed in
cigar boxes, made of cedar wood.

• Between 20-50 cigars are packed in one box.

• Cigars that are not wrapped in cellophane are


called ‘cabinet selection cigar’.

• Cigars are also packaged in aluminum tubes.


STORAGE
STORAGE
• Shelf life of a well kept cigar can be as long as 8-
10 years.

• Ideal temperature of storage should be 18-20ºC

• Humidity should be 65-70%

• Always stored n Humidors made of Cedar wood


or Rose wood.

CIGAR SMOKING
• Cut cigar half way through the cap with a scissor
or guillotine cutter.

• Tap the cigar to remove tar or nicotine.

• Cigar should be lit with a Long match stick,


should be odorless.

• Do not offer to light guests cigar, unless asked to.

• Rotate cigar on the flame.

• Cigar smoking should not be rushed.

• Ash on the cigar is not tapped off.

• Never remove or discard cigar left half smoked by


guests.

• Service performed by a person with an assistant with
him.

• Cigar menu is presented to guest. Cigar on the list is


pointed out in the humidor for the guest to choose.

• Upon selection, the ash tray along with match box is


left on the table.

• Cigar cutter is offered.
