I. Give the appropriate three-term description for each of the following sounds. (1
point)
Example: [k]: voiceless velar stop; [i:]: long front spread

II. In each group of three below, circle the word whose onset/ coda of the first syllable
has only one consonant sound. (1 point)

III. Add a consonant sound to the beginning of the following words to create the new
ones. Or change a vowel sound to…. to make a new word/ Remember to think of
sounds, not spelling. The sound is similar but the spelling is completely different. (1.0
point)
Example: eight  gate ; bin  bean

IV. Do the phonemic transcription and phonetic transcription of the following words.

V. Circle the letter A, B, C or D next to the word whose underlined part is pronounced
differently from the others. (1.0 point)
VI. Does each of the bold words in the following situations have the strong form ot
the weak form? Why? (1.0 point)
Example: A: That ice-cream looks nice.
B: Do you want some?
Answer: ‘some’: strong form; because it is the end of an utterance and it refers to ice-
cream.

VII. Underline the word you think is the most stressed in B ’reply in each of the
following situations and state the reason for your choice. (1.0 point)
Example: A: Has Jean got three brothers?
B: No, she's got three sisters.
Answer: ‘sister’ is used to contrast it with ‘brother’; it is contrastive stress

XIII. Due to assimilation, elision and liaison in rapid speech, the speaker made
mistakes when writing these sentences. Rewrite them so that each sentence makes
sense. (1.0 point)
Example: She doesn’t turn much.  She doesn’t earn much

IX. Identify intonation phrase (tone unit or thought groups) by using double slash (//)
to separate them from one another and then underline the most stressed word in each
‘thought group’ of the following sentences. (1.0 point)
Example: When I was young,// I used to go fishing// with my uncle.
