In July, the men and women of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) continued their aggressive
efforts to take illegal guns off the streets of Chicago. As summer continues, the Department is on
pace to recover a record more than 12,000 guns by the end of the year. The recovery of these deadly
weapons comes during a particularly dangerous time for CPD officers. In the first seven months of the
year, 36 Chicago Police officers have been shot at, with 9 of those officers struck by gunfire.
Despite these risks, officers have recovered more than 7289 guns in 2021, up 28% over this time last
year. This includes the recovery of more than 368 assault weapons. Officers also made 3477 gun
arrests through July 31, a 23% increase compared to 2020.
The Department is also committed to stopping the illegal flow of guns before the weapons even reach
the streets of Chicago. This month, Superintendent David O. Brown announced the creation of the
new, 50-officer Gun Investigations Team (GIT) tasked with tracing, tracking, and arresting
gunrunners, gun traffickers, and others involved in the deadly business of illegal firearm sales.
"The illegal flow of guns is driving violence in Chicago and creating trauma in our neighborhoods,"
Superintendent Brown said. "We can prevent more families from experiencing this trauma by working
together with the community and our state, county, and federal law enforcement partners to take
these guns off the street."
As part of the Department’s efforts to curb gun violence, it is essential to do so in strong partnership
with community members. Those who have information on illegal gun sales or gun possession are
asked to send in tips through CPDTip.com. These tips will help the GIT in its investigations to stop the
ongoing flow of guns in the city.
In July 2021, Chicago experienced 105 murders, compared to the 107 murders in July 2020. More
than 90% of the murders were a result of gun violence.
Citywide, July 2021 recorded a 20-year low in burglaries. That continues the trend of year-to-date
declines, with 20-year-lows across the city in aggravated batteries, burglaries and robberies. Six
districts in the city have also seen 20-year-lows in motor vehicle thefts.
In January, the Department shifted to include UCR figures in our monthly crime newsletter. UCR
figures are the national standard relied upon by the federal government for consistent crime reporting.
CompStat figures are still available on CPD’s website at https://home.chicagopolice.org/statistics-
data/crime-statistics/.
• Superintendent Brown traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with President Joe Biden and
other law enforcement officials from across the country to address the rise in crime nationwide.
Less than two weeks later, the Superintendent and Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot welcomed Attorney
General Merrick Garland to Chicago, where he toured Strategic Decision Support Center
(SDSC) and Area Technology Center (ATC) rooms in the 11th (Harrison) District and discussed
the launch of a federal gun trafficking strike force.
• The Chicago Police Department announced the creation of a new team that will focus on
interrupting the illegal flow of guns into the city. The Gun Investigations Team (GIT) consists of
Chicago Police officers, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Task
Force officers and a Firearms Investigation Team and will strengthen CPD’s comprehensive
strategy to curb gun violence by addressing the pipeline of dangerous weapons in Chicago.
• CPD teamed up with the Chicago Department of Public Health to expand the Narcotics Arrest
Diversion Program. This important step in CPD's reform efforts is designed to divert individuals
with a substance use disorder away from the criminal justice system and toward treatment and
recovery services.
