Lesson Plan Modern Family Speaking
Model I:
- Play the first minute of the video (up to the moment in which Mitch and Cam leave the
airplane).
- Pause, and discuss the scene with the students, pointing out visual elements and words that
might help understand the context.
- Provide the students with a brief summary of what happened in the scene.
Instruction II:
- Explain to the students that, for this section, we are going to focus on specific words and
language forms. They should already be familiar with the concept of intensive listening, so
there's no need to spend too much time here.
Model II:
- Replay the first minute of the video, pausing every once in a while to invite the students to
repeat something that was just said.
Guided Practice

Guided Practice I:
- Play the video up to minute 2:34, asking the students to pay attention to the cues you
discussed earlier in order to understand the context.
- Elicit a summary of the events in the video from the students.
- Replay the video, pausing as needed to discuss with the whole class the cues they were able
to spot in order to understand the context.
Assessment

Assessment I (Homework):
- At home, students will watch, with no subtitles, the entire episode from which today's video
was taken, and write a brief outline of the plot based on what they understood.
Assessment II (Homework):
- Students will fill the list of cloze exercises for the entire episode.
