High Availability – the old way

• Exchange 2007:
− SCC - Single Copy Cluster
− LCR - Local Continuous Replication
− CCR – Clustered Continuous Replication
• Exchange 2007 SP1
− SCR – Standby Continuous Replication
− Normal→SCR
− SCC → SCR
− LCR → SCR
− CCR → SCR

High Availability – the old way

• Only mailbox role could exist on a cluster,
• Additional servers were needed for other roles
• Exchange admin had to know Windows clustering
• To change from non-clustered to clustered,
Exchange had to be reinstalled
• Poor solution for site resilience
• Manual activation for Standby Continuous
Replication required
• No easy failover and failback by Standby
Continuous Replication

7
8/8/2009

High Availability – the new way

• Exchange 2010
− DAG - Database Availability Groups

High Availability

8
8/8/2009

High Availability – the new way

• Database level failover
• No more single point of failure (SCC is dead)
• Exchange takes care of clustering
configuration
• Transaction log shipping
− compression
− encryption
− TCP instead of SMB
• No need to reinstall exchange if you want to
switch from normal to clustered mailbox
server
• Up to 16 copies of the data possible

High Availability – The New Way

• Better transport resiliency
• Online mailbox moves
• Other roles can coexist with the mailbox
role on a clustered machine
• HINT:
− in case you want to load balance several CAS
servers by using Windows Load Balancing they
still have to be separated to other machines as
clustering and load balancing can not coexist
on the same machine
− Alternative use hardware load balancer

9
8/8/2009

Storage
• Automatic database page patching
• 32 KB database page size
• 1 MB disk writes
• Microsoft claim:
− 50% IOPS reduction
− Possibility to use cheaper storage solutions like
SATA
− 10 GB mailboxes

Storage
• Microsoft lab: .VS • Real Life:
SAP
Phone System
Faxing software
Archiving software
Backup
Monitoring
BlackBerry
Encryption
Compliance software
Exchange Antivirus
File system Antivirus
∆ IOPS
up to
500%

10
8/8/2009

Storage
• TIP:
− Don’t run to buy that cheap SATA storage yet
− Do your design first

Databases
• No more storage groups
• Each database has its own log set
• Database are owned by organization not
server
• Database self healing – fixing corrupt pages
due to a bad sector on disk
