Ex 3: The maps show the outskirts of the town of Fosbury in 1980 and 2015

The given diagrams illustrate the developments which took place in the suburb of Fosbury
between 1980 and 2015.
In general, the town was totally transformed from a rural to urban area, seeing fundamental
changes to its residential accomodation and shopping facilities. Also, the North of the maps
mostly stayed untouched over the period shown.
During 35 years, there was an appearance of a huge roundabout in the centre of the city and the
construction of two extra ways to the southern area. Another striking change is that the grocer’s
shop, block of flats and terraced houses was knocked down to make way for a supermakert with
a large car park next to it. Furthermore, an immense field which used to dominate the 1980 map
had been replaced by a range of warehouses by 2015.
Turning to the left area, the period from 1980 to 2015 witnessed a displacement of the park, in
which it was relocated to the front zone with a smaller size. The removal of the old park made
room for the construction of terraced houses. Another major change to the south-western area in
2015 was that two tennis courts were demolished and replaced by a mini car park and a complex
sports centre, which have different facilities for diverse sports, such as soccer, basketball and
rugby.
