01. PROJECT TITLE: 220-240V AC POWER GENERATION BY PV ARRAY USING

SIMULINK SOFTWARE.

02. INTRODUCTION
Energy can be harnessed directly from the sun, even in cloudy weather. Solar energy is used
worldwide and is increasingly popular for generating electricity or heating and desalinating water.
Solar power is generated in two main ways:
Photovoltaics (PV), also called solar cells, are electronic devices that convert sunlight directly
into electricity. Solar PV installations can be combined to provide electricity on a commercial
scale, or arranged in smaller configurations for mini-grids or personal use. Using solar PV to power
mini-grids is an excellent way to bring electricity access to people who do not live near power
transmission lines, particularly in developing countries with excellent solar energy resources.

The cost of manufacturing solar panels has plummeted dramatically in the last decade, making
them not only affordable but often the cheapest form of electricity. Solar panels have a lifespan of
roughly 30 years, and come in variety of shades depending on the type of material used in
manufacturing.
Concentrated solar power (CSP), uses mirrors to concentrate solar rays. These rays heat fluid,
which creates steam to drive a turbine and generate electricity. CSP is used to generate electricity
in large-scale power plants.

03. BACKGROUND
The modern solar cell is likely an image most people would recognize – they are in the panels
installed on houses and in calculators. They were invented in 1954 at Bell Telephone Laboratories
in the United States. Today, PV is one of the fastest-growing renewable energy technologies, and
is ready to play a major role in the future global electricity generation mix.

04. OBJECTIVES
The objective of the project is to design a system which will turn solar energy into pure 220-240V
AC power. We’re using Matlab Simulink R2021a. We didn’t use any power storage device like
Battery cause we tried to keep it simple. Although battery can be included in the design.

05. MOTIVATION
Around us, civilization emerged to its highest pick which results in shortage of energy source. But
the renewable energy like wind, water current, sun can be used to fill up the energy shortage.
Among them sun is more suitable than any other renewable sources. In Bangladesh we can easily
get 10-12 hour of sunlight throughout the year. Thus, the solar energy can be blessed for us and
will be efficient for a developing country like Bangladesh.

06. METHODOLOGY

Block Diagram of PV array power system:

First, the sunrays will fell in the pv array. In the pv array the sunrays creates temperature and
excitation which lead to the generation of little DC voltage in each photo-voltaic cell. The combine
effect of thousands photo-voltaic cell generates almost 120-140V DC voltage from a standard size
pv array.
But, 120-140V isn’t enough to run any system in our homes. It needs 220V minimum. So, by
using boost converter we amplify the voltage to 240V.

Again, one problem occurs, that is the voltage is still DC and most of our systems runs by AC. By
using an inverter circuit, we invert the DC voltage to pulsating AC voltage.
At last we use a passive filter (combination of inductor and capacitor) to make the pulsating AC
to pure sinusoidal AC voltage. Then through a bus the pv array supplies to the load.

07. CIRCUIT DIAGRAM

Circuit diagram can be seen below:

08. SIMULATION
Table: Elements use in the circuit.
NO. COMPONENT’S NAME VALUE/CODE
1. Constant supplier 01 1500 unit
2. Constant supplier 02 25 unit
3. PV Array 60 cells; p-20; s-05
4 All Capacitor 0.006 F
5. All Inductor 0.02 H
6 Diode Ideal
7 IGBT Ideal
8 Inverter/Universal Bridge PED-2; arms-02
9 Load 1 ohm
10 Powergui Ideal
11 Pulse Generator Amp-1; T-1/1500; PW-50%
12 PWM Generator Internal Gen Mode

In the Simulink edit interface, we designed the circuit with necessary components as per the circuit
diagram. We set the value of different components as per the above table. After finishing that we
run the simulation. From different scopes we see the o/p from solar array, then o/p from boost
converter and at last the final o/p after inverter + passive filter operation.

09. RESULT & DISCUSSION

Result: After running the simulation on Matlab Simulink, we found the initial pv array voltage of
184.4V (DC).

Fig: o/p of pv array

After boost operation we get 220-240V stable DC voltage. In the simulation first value was more
than 600V but it reduces and stabilized with time.

Fig: o/p of boost converter

we can see we are getting pure ac signal from the PV array. We get the voltage at 210-235V range.

Discussion: we face some issue with simulation like while running for 2nd or 3rd time the result
distorted.

10. SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACT

This PV Array has a great socio-economic impact. As it is reusable, so people will be found it cost
effective. It has very few electrical components, so it has less power consumption ability. This PV
Array doesn’t create any interference with other electrical equipment.

11. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT & SUSTAINABILITY

Studies back up that electricity production by photovoltaic solar panels is more sustainable than
electricity powered by fossil fuels. Hence, solar pv technologies are small and can be used
anywhere in the world with relatively low operation and maintenance costs.
Though it has some environmental issues during PV Array production. The environmental impacts
associated with solar power are land and water use and pollution, habitat loss, and use of highly
hazardous materials in the manufacturing process.

12. CONCLUSION
The paper presented a PV array based 220-240V AC power generation system. We designed and
simulate with Matlab Simulink software. The results are matched with the expectation. Hence the
goal of this project work is achieved.
