INTRODUCTION

Many roofs are triangular in form but some are trapezoidal in shape. Trapezoids and kites
are quadrilaterals that are not parallelograms. They have interesting properties that help in the
construction of structural designs. Making kites involves geometric concepts so that these kites can
fly high.
In this module, we will study the properties of trapezoids and kites.
Discover some properties of an isosceles trapezoid inductively by doing the
following activity.
ACTIVITY 1
1. Draw and cut an isosceles trapezoid.
2. Measure the interior angles. Determine which angles are congruent.
3. Draw and measure the diagonals. Find out which diagonals are congruent.
4. Write a conclusion about the base angles of an isosceles trapezoid.
5. Write a conclusion about the diagonals of an isosceles trapezoid.

TRAPEZOIDS
´ and EB
In trapezoid CAEB, CA ´ are the bases ,
and CE and AR are the legs.
´ ´

Figure 1. The parallel sides of a trapezoid are

called bases, while its nonparallel sides are called
legs.

PROPERTIES OF ISOSCELES TRAPEZOIDS

 The legs are congruent
 The base angles are congruent
 The diagonals are congruent.

THEOREMS BASED ON THE PROPERTIES OF ISOSCELES TRAPEZOIDS

Theorem 6.7. The base angles of an isosceles trapezoid are congruent.
Theorem 6.8. Converse of Theorem 6.7.If the base angles of a trapezoid are congruent then the
Trapezoid is isosceles.
Theorem 6.9. The diagonals of an isosceles trapezoid are congruent.
Theorem 6.10. Converse of Theorem 6.9.If the diagonals of a trapezoid are congruent, then the trapezoid is
Isosceles.

MIDLINE THEOREM
ACTIVITY 2
1. Draw a triangle. It is preferable that the sizes and types of triangles vary.
2. Locate the midpoint of two sides of a triangle and connect these midpoints with a segment.
Measure the length of this segment.
3. Measure the length of the third side of a triangle.
4. Model the relationship between the length of the segment joining the midpoints of two sides
of a triangle and the length of its third side using a linear equation.

Theorem 6.11. The Midline Theorem. The segment joining the midpoints of two sides of a triangle is parallel
to is third side and is half as long.

MEDIAN OF A TRAPEZOID

The median of a trapezoid is the segment that joins the

midpoints of its legs.

A trapezoid has only one median.

Figure 1. The median of trapezoid WISE is ´
MN

ACTIVITY 3
1. Draw a trapezoid. It is preferable that the sizes of the trapezoids vary.
2. Measure the upper and lower base of the trapezoid.
3. Find the length of the median of each trapezoid.
4. Derive an equation for finding the length of the median of the trapezoid using the lengths of its
bases

Theorem 6.12. The median of a trapezoid is parallel to the bases, and its length is one-half the sum of the
lengths of the bases.
KITE

Figure 3.1 Kite KITE is formed from two isosceles triangles.

A kite has numerous properties. Try to discover these properties by working on the activity.
ACTIVITY 4
1. Draw a kite. Label it KITE.
2. Measure the vertex angles K and T.
3. Measure the nonvertex angles I and E.
4. Make a generalization about the vertex angles and nonvertex angles of kite.
5. Draw the diagonals of KITE. Label the point of intersection S.
6. Measure the diagonals KT ´ and IE
´
7. Measure the angles formed: ∠KSI, ∠KSE, ∠IST and ∠EST.
8. Make a generalization about the diagonals of a kite.
9. Measure IS
´ and SE
´ .
10. Make a generalization on the diagonal connecting the vertex angles of a kite in relation to the
other diagonal.
11. Measure ∠IKT, ∠EKT, ∠ITK, and ∠ETK.
12. Make a generalization on the diagonal of a kite in relation to its vertex angles.

THEOREMS BASED ON THE PROPERTIES OF A KITE

Theorem 6.13. Kite Angles Theorem. The nonvertex angles of a kite are congruent.
Theorem 6.14. Kite Diagonals Theorem. The diagonals of a kite are perpendicular.
Theorem 6.15. Kite Diagonal Bisector Theorem. The diagonal connecting the vertices of the vertex angles of a
Kite is the perpendicular bisector of the other diagonal.
Theorem 6.15. Kite Angle Bisector Theorem. The vertex angles of a kite are bisected by its diagonal.

 A quadrilateral is a four-sided polygon, closed figure, and has four vertices or corners.
 CPCTC is an acronym for Corresponding Parts of Congruent Triangles are Congruent.
 Theorem is a statement that needs to be proven.
 Postulate is a statement that is accepted without proof.
 An isosceles trapezoid is a trapezoid with congruent legs.
 A trapezoid is a quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel sides.
 The parallel sides of a trapezoid are called basis, while its nonparallel sides are called legs.
 A segment joining the midpoints of two sides of a triangle is called the midline of the triangle.
 The median of a trapezoid is the segment that joins the midpoints of its legs.
 A trapezoid has only one median.
 A kite is a quadrilateral with distinct pairs of congruent and adjacent sides.
 The area of a kite is half the product of the lengths of its diagonals.
