17 Binding Wire For Reinforcement Structures

Purpose of Binding Wires: The main purpose of binding wire is to hold

the bars in proper position
To avoid displacement of bars during concrete pouring.
To keep the reinforcement intact in its required position.
To provide spacing of bars as specified by consultant.
To keep lapped bars in the desired close position to transfer forces correctly
To secure secondary's like chairs, spacer bars etc.. In position during construciton.

IS Code
IS 2502 - 1963 Cl. 7.2 Tying of Reinforcement
Size of binding wire not less than 0.9mm.

SP 24 - 1983 Cl. 11.2

Bars crossing each other should be secured by annealed binding wires (0.9. mm
diameter or over) at intervals, in such a manner that they will not slip over each
other during concreting.

IS: 280-1962 Specification for Mild Steel Wire

More the diameter of the rebar, lesser the requirement of binding wire

As per Sri. P.T. Joglekar’s book on Quantity Surveyor Book it is mentioned as:
For 1 tonne (1000kg) = 9 to 13 kg binding wire will be required .

Further as per the industry practice the Quantity of binding wire used varies from 7 kg- 13 kg per ton of steel.
Nowadays Galvanized Iron, GI wires are also used in the industry

13 kg of binding wire required to tie 1 Ton of 8 mm to 28mm steel rebars.

7 kg of binding wire required to tie 1 Ton of 28 mm to 32 mm steel rebars.

Base Slab Steel Density = 150 kg / m3 (Kindly deduct Shear Link Wt.)
Base slab volume = 1 m3
Wt. of steel/ m2 area = 150 kgs (top & bottom mat)
For each mat on each side = 75 kgs
Considering Avg. wt. of binding wire = 7 kg /tonne binding wire
Hence, binding wire required / m2 area = 0.5 kg's

Binding Wire Dia. = 1.2 mm

Length of each binding wire = 550 mm
Wt. of each binding wire = 0.005 kg / wire

Total no. of wires required / m2 area = 108 No's
