A person is counted as a confirmed case of COVID-19 when they have their first positive molecular test. They might have multiple tests but are only counted once.
An incidence rate is the number of new cases divided by the number of people living in the geographic area. MDPH calculates rates per 100,000 population using denominators
estimated by the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute using a modified Hamilton-Perry model (Strate S, et al. Small Area Population Estimates for 2011 through 2020,
report, Oct 2016.) Rates are used to compare data between geographic areas that have different population sizes.
A person is counted as a probable case if they meet one of three criteria: 1. if they have a positive antigen test; 2. if they have COVID symptoms AND were exposed to someone with

accurate and a positive result means someone has a current COVID-19 infection.

A confirmed death is a person who died of COVID-19. They had been tested and diagnosed with COVID-19 before they died or were tested after they died, and the result was
positive. Effective April 1, 2021, a confirmed death is person who: died within 60 days of their first positive molecular test (unless their cause of death was clearly not related to
COVID-19); or COVID-19 is listed on their death certificate following a positive molecular test regardless of time since diagnosis.
