Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the TLE - EIM Grade 10 Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Selecting

Tools, Materials, and Equipment used in Ground Installation!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by

educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or
facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum
while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them
to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the TLE - EIM Grade 10 Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Selecting

Tools, Materials, and Equipment used in Ground Installation!

The hand is one of the most symbolized parts of the human body. It is often
used to depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create
and accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a
learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant
competencies and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in
your own hands!

Selecting Tools, Materials
LESSON
1 and Equipment Used in
Ground Installation

What’s In

In the previous lesson, you have learned about identifying the correct
quantity of wiring materials and devices in ground installation. This time, review
some of the learning you have encountered because this will help you understand
our next lesson.

Activity 1: Name me!

Directions: Below are the pictures of different basic electrical tools and materials.
Name each picture with corresponding basic usage. Write your answer on your
activity sheet.

Tools and Materials Name Uses

What’s New
Tools are defined as implements used to alter raw materials for human use.
Tools can be an extension of the human hand thereby improving its speed, power,
and accuracy.

Importance of Tools
Advantages of using the proper tools:
1. Efficiency of work
2. High quality of the work
3. Speed of accomplishment
4. Accuracy

However, these advantages depend on three factors, namely:

1. Availability and sufficiency of the materials
2. Experience and skill of the workers in their respective fields
3. Good quality of tools, materials and equipment

Types of Tools and Equipment

There are three main types of tools/equipment in the shop. One type is
known as hand tools because your hand supplies the energy to operate them. The
other type is called machine or power tool/equipment which uses their
electricity, compressed air, or hydraulic pressure to make them operate. The last
type is referred to as measuring tools.

Activity 2: Dig deeper!

Direction: As you have already understood the importance of tools, enumerate at
least two (2) advantages of using proper tools, materials and equipment and
elaborate each.

1. _____________________________________________________________________

2. _____________________________________________________________________
What is It

Another milestone unlocked! Now let us proceed to the different hand tools,
power tools and materials used in ground installation.
Tools, Materials and Equipment used in Ground Installation
Hand tools
1. Insulated screwdriver is a tool used for fastening and loosening screws
especially those screws found in grounding clamp.

2. Claw hammer is the most commonly used tools in the shop. It is used
in grinding and pulling out nails.

3. Pliers are made from metal with insulators in the handle and are
use for gripping wires and cables in ground installation.

4. Wrenches are used to turn screws, nuts and bolts with hexagon heads.

Power Tools/Equipment
A. Electric tools

1. Electric drill has an electric motor that drives a chuck. The chuck has
jaws that can open and close to grip and drill kit. Use in making round
holes for a screw or driving fasteners.

2. Grinding wheels can be either bench-mounted or pedestal installed. They

may either have grinding wheel, view wheel, or two grinding wheels.

Measuring Tool
The measuring tool that is used in electrical workshop otherwise known as
“Rule” is:

1. Pull-Push Tape is used to measure the length of wires and cables to be

used used in ground installation.
Materials used in Ground Installation
1. Electrical tape is a safety tape for wires, used to cover and insulate a
broad range of cables, wires and other materials that conduct electricity.

2. Grounding wire is a green colored insulated wire screwed into utility

boxes, junction boxes and panel-boards connected to the grounding rod
to discharge the electricity during the ground fault and sends it outside
into the ground.

3. Grounding rod, also known as grounding electrodes are used to connect

the grounding of electrical device to earth ground. Ground rods are very good
conductors of electricity and allow any dangerous electricity to flow
to ground, taking the danger away from you and the electrical panel.

4. Grounding clamp is used to connect the grounding electrode conductor to

the ground wire.

5. Metal screws are used to connect the grounding wires to the utility boxes,
junction boxes and panel-boards.

What’s More

In order to firm up your understanding of the topic previously presented,

describe each statement in the activity below.

Activity 3: Describe me!

Directions: Read each statement carefully and identify the tool/material being
described. Write your answer on your activity sheet.

____________1. A tool used for fastening and loosening screws especially those
screws found in grounding clamp
____________2. Electrical hand tool used to grind and pull out nails
____________3. Made from metal with insulators in the handle and it is used for
gripping wires and cables
____________4. Used to turn screws, nuts and bolts with hexagon heads
____________5. Material used to connect the grounding electrode conductor to the
ground wire

What I Have Learned

You did a great job in the previous activities! Now, it is time to process what
you have learned from the lesson.

Activity 4
Directions: Identify the word to complete each sentence. Write your answer on
your activity sheet.

1. Electrical tape is a safety tape for wires, used to _______ and ___________ a broad

range of cables, wires and other materials that conduct electricity.
2. Pliers are made from metal with insulators in the handle and are used for
__________ wires and cables in ground installation.
3. ________ _________is used to connect the grounding electrode conductor to the
ground rod.
4. Grounding wire discharges the electricity that has built up during the _________
_______ and sends it outside of your home back into the ground.
5. Insulated screwdriver is a tool used for _________ and ___________ screws
especially those screws found in grounding clamp.

Congratulations! You’ve got it. Proceed to the next activity.

Good luck!
What I Can Do

Directions: Read and analyze carefully the task given in Column A and complete
the table by writing the appropriate tool, material, or equipment in Column B.
Write your answer on your activity sheet.

A B
Task Appropriate tool, material or

6. In doing the ground installation, it
is necessary to use this kind of
ground installation material to help
those positive charges get to the
ground in a safe, direct and
controlled way, where they can be
discharged without the risk of
electrical shock or fire. It discharges
the electricity during the ground
fault and sends it outside into
the ground.
