SECTION 12 48 13
ENTRANCE FLOOR MATS AND FRAMES

PART 1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

1.01 SCOPE OF WORK

A. Furnish and install all materials, tools and equipment for floor mats and frames as specified
herein, and as indicated by the Engineer.

1.02 RELATED SECTIONS

A. For concrete floor slab recess, and grouting frames into recess - Section 033000, Concrete.

1.04 QUALITY ASSURANCE


A. Single Source Responsibility: Obtain floor mats and frames from one source from a single
manufacturer.

B. Provide installed floor mats that comply with Americans with Disability Act (ADA) and
Accessibility Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities (ADAAG)

1.05 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: Submit manufacturer's product specifications, installation and maintenance


instructions.

B. Shop Drawings: Submit shop drawings showing layout and types of floor mat and frames, not
less than half scale sections of typical installations, details of patterns or designs, anchors and
accessories, and field measurements of slab recess to receive frames.

C. Samples:

1. For Selection submit actual sections of floor mat and frame material in a convenient, but
representative size showing full range of colors, textures, finishes and patterns available for
each type of floor mat and frame specified.

2. For Verification submit sample not less than 12 inch square sections of floor mat material
and 12 inches of length of frame material in selected colors and finishes for each type of
floor mat and frame specified.

1.06 WARRANTY

A. Floor frames and mats shall be fabricated free of defects in materials and workmanship. The
Contractor shall obtain a five (5) year extended warranty from the date of Substantial Completion
from the manufacturer, against defects in materials and substandard workmanship.

1.07 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Coordinate with concrete work so that frames are available for placing integrally with floor slabs,
unless frames are to be installed during related interior floor work.

B. The Authority reserves the right to reject any material that is stored improperly.

PART 2 MATERIALS

2.01 ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURERS

A. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, manufacturers offering products which


may be incorporated in the Work include, but are not limited to the following:
1. BOD: Arden Architectural Specialties, Inc., 151 Fifth Avenue NW, Suite J, St. Paul MN,
55112, (800) 521-1826 or (651) 631-1607.
2. C/S Entrance Flooring Systems.
3. Babcock-Davis.
4. Or an approved equal.

2.02 MAT AND FRAME TYPE

A. Recessed flexible floor mats and frames with rubber inserts in aluminum tread rails,
"ENVIRONTREAD" or approved equal.

A. Aluminum Frames: Extruded aluminum, ASTM B221, alloy 6063-T6, with butted corners and
factory coated with manufacturer's standard protective coating where surfaces will be in contact
with concrete.

1. Frame Style: Model F-9 level bed frame.

2. Finish: Standard mill finish.

B. Aluminum Treads: Extruded aluminum, ASTM B221, alloy 6063-T6.

1. Tread Style: Model M-775, EnvIRONtread tread insert: Two buffed fiber reinforced
rubber tire sections each tread rail color to be selected by the Designer. Overall height of
tread rail shall be 1/2 inch.

2. Hinge Type: Flexible low density polyethylene hinge retained in "captive" aluminum
tread port, with drainage provision to allow debris and moisture to flow through mat.

3. Tread Cushions: Extruded vinyl cushion spaced 24 inches 0. C.

C. Fillers: Serrated vinyl type for use when tread spacing (1-7/8 inches, 47.6 mm) cannot be
maintained, or to fill irregular frame condition; color - black.

D. Fasteners: Non-corrosive screws and anchors for securing frames together and to floors.

2.04 FABRICATION

A. Shop fabricate floor mats and frames to greatest extent possible in sizes shown. Where not
otherwise shown, provide single unit for each mat installation, but do not exceed manufacturer's
maximum size recommendation for units intended for removal and cleaning. Where joints in
mats are necessary, space symmetrically and away from normal traffic lanes. Miter corner joints
in framing elements with hairline joints or provide prefabricated corner units without joints.
Where possible, verify sizes by field measurement before shop fabrication.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 EXAMINATION

A. Examine the substrates and conditions under which the work is to be performed, and notify the
Contractor in writing of conditions detrimental to the proper and timely completion of the work.
Do not proceed with the installation until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.02 INSTALLATION

A. Install recessed floor mats and frames in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, at
locations shown and with top of frames level with adjoining finished flooring. Coordinate top of
mat surfaces with doors that swing across mats to provide under door clearance.

1. Where frame is embedded in grout, provide necessary shims, spaces, and anchorages for
proper location and secure attachment.

2. For installation in terrazzo flooring, contact manufacturer.

B. Install surface type units in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, at locations shown and
coordinated with entrance locations and traffic patterns.

1. Anchor fixed surface type frame members to floor with fasteners spaced as recommended by
manufacturer.

3.03 PROTECTION

A. Upon completion of frame installations, provide temporary filler of plywood or fiberboard in mat
recesses, and cover frames with plywood protective flooring. Maintain protection until
construction traffic has ended and project is near time of Substantial Completion.

B. Install tread mat when no further wheeled construction traffic will occur and wet type operations,
including painting and decorating are complete.
