Why the 7302/7330 ISAM?

Why a multi-service IP DSLAM?

> … or a justification – The usual marketing/business stuff

> It’s all about the introduction of new services, in general voice and video
services, where the video services can consume/take a lot of bandwidth in the
network of an operator. Let’s call this …
> … THE NEED FOR SPEED of customers.

> Operators translate this in a couple of ‘requirements’, namely

• the need for increased revenue
• the need for service bundling
• the need for high market penetration
• the need for new access technologies

3FL 00276 AAAA WBZZA Ed 02 4 © 2006 Alcatel Bell N.V., All rights reserved
Impact of the need for speed on access

1 Multi-service from a single access platform is key.

• Triple Play : Data, Voice and Video
Increased need for bandwidth results in …
• new BB access technologies (Multi-DSL, VDSL, FTTU)
• deployment of deep fiber & remote devices
• upgraded capacity in the DSLAM

2 Access network architecture evolves to IP multi-edge & Ethernet:

• initiated by DSLAMs providing both ATM/GE interfaces
• DHCP is the end-game for VoIP and STBs, PPP remains for HSIA
• this requires a service enabled edge, ensuring security & guaranteed QOS

3 Access platform becomes an intelligent multi-service hub …

• which needs centralized subscriber & access management
• which is IP empowered (e.g. native multicast, IGMP proxy)
• which needs optical Ethernet termination

> So we started off saying that customers do have the need for speed, i.e. faster
lines, bigger capacities on their lines. This impacts the operators a lot, and the
slide above indicates four main areas operators focus on.
> For the single topic mentioned here, some slides explain them on following
pages.

> Multi-DSL: ADSL and the new ADSL2 flavors: ADSL2, ADSL2+ & READSL2
> VDSL: Very High Speed DSL
> FTTU: Fiber to the User
> STB: Set Top Box, attaches to your TV set

> The traditional DSL access multiplexer (DSLAM) (being an ATM DSLAM or an
IP DSLAM) is built and tailored for supporting one single service: the high speed
internet access service (HSIA), which is a best effort service.
> Given the increased penetration of multiple services over the broadband
infrastructure, these nodes are evolving towards multi-service access nodes,
focusing on guaranteeing the delivery of multiple services towards all users, and
this for business as well as residential subscribers.
> The major challenge to be solved is the capability to deliver the complete service
kiosk to every subscriber, with different customer profiles (for both business and
residential subscribers), with different QoS and service level agreement (SLA)
constraints.

> Each service demands its own specific network requirements. Consequently
migrating to a range of new services beyond high-speed internet access
requires that not only the access node, but also the transport, management and
service architectures evolve accordingly.
> The existing access network needs to evolve from the current “best effort”
service to an architecture that supports multimedia services.

> The access nodes in the central office (CO) are now intelligent multi-service
hubs, providing Gigabit aggregation for subtended remote units or management
system and access point to all devices.
> Bringing the service delivery point closer to the subscriber is essential for the
success of multi-services deployment, providing improved QoS, scalability and
reliability. This enhanced architecture provides an increased level of service
knowledge in the CO by distributing the intelligence from the central BRAS
towards the access nodes.
> The next generation multi-service access nodes need to ensure that the variety
of service types are properly prioritized, processed and that services are
classified onto dedicated virtual local area networks (VLANs) or permanent
virtual circuits (PVCs) extending into the second mile of the access network. The
increased need for bandwidth for video services has lead to strong innovations
inside the access nodes. Dedicated video resources, native layer 2 multicast
and IGMP proxy lead the way to multi-service.
> In addition, advances such as network processors, non-blocking architectures,
subscriber management relay or termination, increased Gigabit connectivity and
advanced security features (tracking users to a port to prevent fraudulent activity
and denial of service attacks) are critical features in the network evolution
process.

> The 7302 ISAM is particularly interesting for those operators who are planning a
fast evolution towards multiple services over the broadband infrastructure.
These are typically service providers looking to implement a triple play package
of internet, video and voice over copper as well as business internet and
corporate access services for SMEs.
> The Alcatel 7302 ISAM is tailored for Ethernet aggregation only, so it does not
offer any ATM network connectivity. It is, therefore, initially targeted for
operators with Ethernet aggregation networks deploying new DSLAMs in the
COs. This market is distinct from that of the Alcatel 7300 ASAM and the 7301
ASAM, which offer a migration path towards Ethernet aggregation with the
existing Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet uplink products while keeping the
legacy connectivity to the existing ATM network. As a final migration step, the
7300 and 7301 ASAM upgraded with Ethernet uplinks can be subtended to the
7302 ISAM to operate in a 100 percent Ethernet aggregation environment, with
guaranteed services towards all the subscribers.

> Before describing the 7302 ISAM platform, let us first position it in the “world of
DSLAMs”.
> Traditionally, a DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexer) had an ATM core aggregating
traffic from all ATM based xDSL access lines. Given that most edge networks
were - and mostly currently still are – based on ATM switching and/or SDH
transport, it is quite natural to keep ATM as underlying layer 2 technology and
provide interworking to IP deeper in the network (e.g. at the BAS).
> The need for a DSLAM with Ethernet and/or IP capabilities is widely recognized.
The specific term “IP DSLAM” can however be interpreted in different ways, for
in the most generic sense “IP DSLAM” means “a DSLAM with IP/Eth functions
that interfaces with an Ethernet aggregation network”.

> On the slide you see 3 possible interpretations of an IP DSLAM, and at the
same time this slide positions the Alcatel 7300/7301 ASAM versus the Alcatel
7302 ISAM.
> Option A represents in fact an ATM DSLAM with ATM/Ethernet interworking
function at the trunk interface. That means that the end-user traffic (e.g. IP/Eth
or IP/PPP/Eth) remains encapsulated in ATM until the point where the traffic is
aggregated to be sent into the edge network – i.e. the internal architecture of the
DSLAM in this case is still based on ATM.
> Option B shows a DSLAM where the ATM/Ethernet interworking function is no
longer at the trunk interface, yet at the termination side of the xDSL lines. That
means that the end-user traffic (e.g. IP/Eth or IP/PPP/Eth) is decapsulated from
ATM upon entering the DSLAM and processed as Ethernet traffic inside the
DSLAM – i.e. the internal architecture of the DSLAM in this case is based on
Ethernet.
> Finally option C shows a DSLAM that is not only based on an Ethernet switching
core, but is even capable of terminating Ethernet based access interfaces.
These access interfaces can be Ethernet based xDSL (such as packet based
VDSL) or direct Ethernet interfaces (e.g. optical links to connect end-users).
The 7302 ISAM can currently terminate direct Ethernet interfaces and packet
based VDSL is planned for future releases.

> At the user side, the ISAM terminates ADSL/ADSL2/Re-ADSL/ADSL2+ & VDSL
links. It is also possible to terminate a limited number of Fast Ethernet or Gigabit
Ethernet links (FE/GE).
> At the network side, the ISAM terminates GE or FE links. In case of more than
1 FE or 1 GE, Ethernet link aggregation can be used. The Ethernet links can
also be connected to 1 or more Ethernet switches. The Ethernet switches
forward the frames over the Ethernet based aggregation access network until it
reaches the IP Edge Router of the corresponding network service provider. At
the IP Edge Router, the frame enters the IP backbone of the network service
provider. The ISAM can also be connected directly to the IP Edge router, in
which case the Ethernet aggregation network is reduced to 1 or more parallel
Ethernet links.
> At the user side it is also possible to connect subtending IP-DSLAMs. It is
possible for example to connect ISAMs in cascading mode (i.e. 1 subtending
ISAM per ISAM with a cascading depth of 4). The last system can be any
IPDSLAM such as for example an ISAM, or an Alcatel ASAM R4.x with a FENT
or an Alcatel NBE (Noodle Box with Ethernet uplink).

> Cascading/daisy-chaining architecture

> The ‘cascading’ feature allows installing shelves and racks in a chain. The so-
called subtended system is connected to the main system through a subtending
interface (such as Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet) and shares the network
interface of the main system. Depending on the exact purpose (expanding to
large DSLAMs in certain central offices and/or increasing coverage in the
network by positioning DSLAMs at as many locations as possible), the
subtended systems can be co-located with the main system or at a remote
location.
> There is no strict limitation on the number of subtended ISAMs. Each ISAM has
its own free running clock.
> Note that also other types of DSLAMs can be cascaded of an ISAM via Fast or
Gigabit Ethernet interfaces: 730x ASAM, 730x ASAM-c, 7324 RU, non Alcatel

via Ethernet subtending links
• Standalone nodes : Each node provides the Ethernet switch and aggregation
function and is managed separately

Ø Expansion
• Expansion of ISAM Host Shelf (7330 Only) with remote LTs,
via Expansion links (Optical)
• Switch and Aggregation function in Host Shelf only
• One system : Host Shelves are managed together as a single system

Ø ASAM-like Extension
• Daisy-chaining of ASAM shelves via Extender cables and cards
• Not supported in ISAM

> The Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) is a frame based Digital
Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM), i.e. a Digital Subscriber Line
(DSL) access multiplexer which is based on a (ethernet) frame forwarding
architecture in a packet aggregation network.
> Different types of ISAM exist but they principally consist out of the same building
blocks.
> The data forwarding in the ISAM is accomplished by interworking functions (on
LT’s) and/or an aggregation function (on the NT/GENC): both of them include a
forwarding engine.
> The line termination boards (LT) in case of copper access – which is the focus of
this course , exists for DSL access
On this board the DSL part is physically terminated.
> Internally the ISAM is Ethernet. As a result of this, the LT will also remove the
ATM/AAL layer in case ADSL technology is used.
> The aggregation function is a 24 Gbps switching matrix delivering 1 Gigabit
towards each line card (LT) and offering 7/8 Gigabit Ethernet uplinks.
> The line card can be a unit on his own (REM)

> The NT board contains an integrated aggregation function with a total capacity
of 24 Gbps which is commonly referred to as the service hub (SHUB).
> Actually there are two ethernet switches on the NT having a capacity of 12 Gbps
each, which means the total switching capacity is 24 Gbps, corresponding with
16 GE ASAM links + 7 external Ethernet links + 1 control link.
> Depending on the NT card type, there is no longer an external control link (FE)
used which provides one additional network link (true e.g. for ECNT-C)

> Targeted for R3.1

> The Alcatel 7330 ISAM FTTN Remote Expansion Module (REM) is a copper,
power-fed and passively cooled, sealed linecard that can be pole- or
housemounted. By subtending the module from the Alcatel 7330 ISAM FTTN,
an operator can create a footprint quickly and cost-effectively.
> The Alcatel 7330 ISAM FTTN Remote Expansion Module (REM) also
establishes footprint quickly and cost-effectively; however, it is more suited to
multi-tenant units because it is AC powered and not fully sealed.
> The 7330 FTTN Remote Expansion Module (REM) provides up to 24 ports of
VDSL subscriber interfaces in a pizza box type enclosure. The REM is intended
to be deployed in either internal or external cabinets. A GigE uplink connects the
REM to the host device, such as a 7330 FTTN Host.

> All the data that passes through the 7302 ISAM will always pass through the NT.
It is the 24 Gbps Ethernet aggregation switching function, i.e. the service hub
residing on the NT that is responsible for the data forwarding towards the
Ethernet aggregation network.
> Another functionality of the NT-board is the control plane of the 7302 ISAM
required e.g. for maintenance and operations, remote inventory information and
shelf management.
It provides management interfaces (LAN, CRAFT, RCRAFT) to the outside
world and control interfaces towards the Line Termination (LT) boards and the
Network Termination I/O.
> On the NT resides an interface and media conversion block which provides 3 or
4 (depending on NT card type) external Ethernet interfaces. These interfaces
are primarily intended to be used as subtending and/or network links. In case
optical interfaces are needed the media converter on the NT converts the
electrical signal coming from the service hub into an optical signal.

> The ACU (Alarm Control Unit) board is necessary in each ISAM system. It takes
care of the following functions:
• Collect equipment alarms from rack and sends them to the NT. These
alarms are FAN alarms, fuse alarms, power alarms, external customer
definable alarms
• The ACU sends its alarms to the Network Termination board, which
transfers these signals to the element management system (5523 AWS).
• Allows to connect a craft terminal using an RS232 (ACU in main rack)
– The local craft interface port on the front panel of the AACU consists of
a 9-pin DB9 interface connector (I.e., female pins & male shell)
configured as a Data Circuit Terminating Equipment (DCE) to
communicate with a local Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) craft
terminal. (9k6, 8n1)
Remark: there is also a remote craft terminal port via the backplane .
This backplane interface is configured as a DTE. Still you need to have
the ACU board in place to have access to the Craft Terminal
application.
The local and remote craft terminal are serial channels that are
terminated independently by separate serial devices. They can
physically be connected at the same time. However, due to internal
restrictions, only one serial channel can be active at any given time.
• Drive rack alarm lamps and provides visual alarm indications via LEDs
> The ACU handles input and output alarm information via a cable connection to
the Top Rack Unit (TRU):
• 20 input signals of which 10 are spare alarm inputs
• 20 output signals for audible, visual and telemetry alarms

following items, depending on the rack configuration: TRU, for power termination
and distribution, splitter shelf and one or two splitterless shelves
> In ISAM R2.x, it will not be possible to extend the ISAM with multiple shelves.
One ISAM R2.x system is limited to 1shelf. Only single-shelf systems will be
supported.
> For the ASAM shelf the XD-LT ETSI splitterless shelf is reused.
> When the splitter-shelf is not integrated in the rack, one rack will be able to
accomodate 2 ISAM systems (see drawing). Splitterless deployment is used in
case of splitters collocated with MDF or ‘splitterless’ deployment (CLEC).
> In case the splitters are integrated in the rack itself, one ISAM system can be

• ACU slot: for the ACU card – also used in ASAM, does alarm management
of the shelf
• LT board area: these are 16 positions where the 48 lines LT cards are
inserted.
• 1 SMAS slot: for the SMAS (System Mac address Storage) card, contains a
remote inventory PROM that contains the MAC address(es) of the system
• 1 fan unit with or without dust filter.
• The upper part of the shelf is referred to as the connector area (also see
one of the following slides).

> This eXtreme Density ETSI subrack is a splitterless shelf with front access and
backpanel architecture.
The shelf forsees a dedicated slot for two NTs and one ACU, shielded from the
LT slots. Additionally it can house 16 line termination units, each supporting 48
lines, and interface units.
> 16 LT boards in one sub-rack and only one sub-rack in one ISAM system means
that the max nr of xDSL lines that one ISAM system can support is 48*16=768
lines.
> The ALTS-T has no splitter area. The splitter function can be done in the same

subracks, even if the configuration only requires one subrack . This is due to
anticipated difficulties in adding cables after initial installation.
> The top rack unit terminates the feed(s) of the office battery branches A and B
and distributes the power to up to two subracks via individual feeds and via
circuit breakers.
> In an XD rack, the Top Rack Unit (ATRU) distributes fused -48 Vdc or -60 Vdc
power to all the subracks and fan units via two redundant branches. It interfaces
between the DSL equipment and the Central Office alarm system.

ECNT – Network termination board (1/2)

Ø service hub
• 24 Gbps line rate capacity
• 16 port reserved for line cards &
expansions
• 1 (0) port to the control & mgt function
• 7 (8) ports remaining for Ethernet user
links, subtending links and network links
Ø contains FLASH, RAM and ROM
memory
Ø interfacing with management and
control interfaces via backpanel
Ø traffic management on NT

63

> In addition to providing network termination, the ECNT-A card performs Ethernet
switching and control functions for the 7302 and the 733- ISAM FTTN, as well as
for any connected remote expansion units. It handles the xDSL, the shelf, and
the switching data path.
> The ECNT-A card handles high-bandwidth IP services for xDSL subscribers by
providing a 24 Gigabit Ethernet switching fabric.
In the downstream direction, high-bandwidth IP services enter the network
termination side of the 7302 ISAM or 7330 ISAM FTTN over optical or electrical
connectivity at the ECNT-A card or through optical connectivity at the NT I/O
(7302 ISAM) card or GENC card. (7330 ISAM FTTN)
> The ECNT-A card switches the Ethernet IP traffic. The appropriate packets for
each connected xDSL subscriber are then forwarded over the backplane by an
LT unit. In the upstream direction, the ECNT-A card receives Ethernet packets
from the LT units over the backplane. The ECNT-A card either switches the
Ethernet packets to the high-bandwidth IP services network or passes them to
the NT I/O (7302 ISAM) or GENC (7330 ISAM FTTN) card for transmission to
the high-bandwidth IP services network.
> For expansion configurations with remote expansion units, the NT unit on the
7330 ISAM host shelf switches traffic destined for remote subscribers to
expansion ports on the GENC card via the shelf backplane. Traffic from remote
subscribers is forwarded to the NT unit over the expansion links that connect to
the GENC card on the host shelf.
> The ECNT-A card supports inband management traffic received through its
connectors. Local management through a craft terminal is supported by the
ECNT card through craft connections on the AACU-C and PWIO-B cards. The
NT unit on the host shelf is used to manage remote expansion units which do
not have their own network appearance.

64

> The ECNT-A card has three connectors for Gigabit Ethernet optical or electrical
connections and three connectors for Ethernet electrical connections to a high-
bandwidth IP services network.
> The six connectors are logically grouped into three pairs of one electrical
connector and one optical connector each.
Only one of the two connectors in a logical pair can be active at any one time.
For example, if you are using the optical connector in the first pair, then you
cannot use the electrical connector of the pair until you disconnect the optical
connector for the pair. If ECNT-A cards have been installed for NT redundancy,
a total of six NT connectors are provided, with three being active.

• Alarm and control support
• MTA support

Ø 14 Optical GE interfaces
• 10 for Expansion – Downlinks
• 2 for uplinks – towards network/subtended/end-user
• 2 selectable (Expansion or uplinks)
Ø Installed in ATI - slot
• Field replacable

74

> The GENC card is also a General facilities card and must be installed in the ATI
slot of the ARAM-D shelf and is a field-replaceable unit . Its main functionality is
to provide connectivity and distribution for power feeds and external alarms
> The GENC is a plug-in unit that performs as stated above multiple functions in
which also additional optical Gigabit Ethernet connectivity for the 7330 FTTN
ISAM 4-LT-slot host shelf and remote units (REM).
> In total the GENC card provides 14 additional optical Gigabit Ethernet
connectors to supplement the connectors provided on the ECNT card.
• On the GENC-E card faceplate, the first two optical ports (ports 4 and 5) are
reserved for network connections (uplinks).
Ports 6 and 7 are configurable as either uplinks or as expansion links
(downlinks). The other 10 ports are expansion ports. It is possible to have
up to 12 expansion links connected to remote expansion units for each host
shelf since each shelf has one GENC card.
> On the board the SFP modules for Gigabit Ethernet optical connectivity are not
delivered with the card but need to be ordered separately. Depending on the
requirements of the operator. The Optical Gigabit Ethernet ports support
standard Alcatel optical SFPs.
> On the board itself the status of the SFP modules are indicated by LEDs.

3FL 00276 AAAA WBZZA Ed 02 74 © 2006 Alcatel Bell N.V., All rights reserved
Alarm and control support
> The GENC-E collects external alarms received through five general alarm inputs
connected through the PWIO-B and passes them to the active NT unit.
> An alarm is activated when a predefined alarm input is received within a 500 ft
(152.4 m) loop of 26 AWG wiring.
> The GENC-E controls the alarm LEDs on the PWIO-B. The GENC monitors the
ACO switch on the PWIO-B and controls the ACO LED (located on the PWIO-
B).
ACO = Alarm Cut Off :: allows the audible alarms to be extinguished without
affecting the visual alarms. The audible alarms can be toggled as enabled or
disabled.
Furthermore it is the GENC that supports the craft port of the PWIO-B (used for
connecting a craft terminal).
> The power status and status of the board itself as well as information on SFP’s
are provided by LEDs on its faceplate.
MTA support
> The GENC-E provides support for MTA-based testing and monitoring of one line
at a time in the 4-LT-slot host shelf. MTA up and MTA down connections are
made at the PWIO-B. The GENC-E provides a relay-based matrix and monitor
circuitry to connect the test in and test out signals with the backplane for
connection to the appropriate applique (the applique uses relays to connect to
the appropriate line). The GENC-E provides a loop around for calibration and
surge suppression for protection. The GENC-E controls the TAP activity LED on
the PWIO-B to indicate that MTA-based testing or monitoring is in progress.
> Connector status is indicated through LEDs on the GENC-E faceplate.
> GENC-F à Integrated Test and Sealing Current in GENC = ITSC capable

> On the SMAS-card the MAC-addresses of the NT/service hub that will be used
for management, is stored. When the system boots, the service hub gets its
MAC-address from the SMAS-card. The 24 MAC-addresses for each port on
the SHUB, are stored on the PROM of the SMAS-card.
The reason why the MAC-addresses are stored on a separate card, that only
contains a remote inventory of the ISAM shelf, is that if it would be on the NT
and the NT would fail, the network might have trouble. The MAC-address will
have been learned and if you replace the failing NT by another one, a new MAC-
address would have to be learned. What if the old arp-entry first has to age?
(e.g. a delay of 5 minutes). With the MAC-addresses on the SMAS card, any
NT will get the same MAC-addresses after replacement, so the switches in the
network don’t need to learn any new MAC-addresses from the NT’s.
