FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

DISPEL THE GLOOM WITH

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS
T
he overall atmosphere this year has been gloomy. Most people across the world would like
to forget the year 2020 and wish that it had never happened. The COVID-19 pandemic with
millions infected and many dead, a struggling economy that is spiraling at an alarming pace
and lack of jobs coupled with millions of displaced workers returning to their villages with nothing
more than the clothes on their backs mean that next few quarters are going to be very tough.
Hospitality, aviation, retail, show-business are only some of the businesses that have been very
badly affected. The GDP de-growth of 26% in first quarter of this financial year is a clear indicator
as to where the economy is now and the long struggle it is going to take before things start to look
up for our country and our businesses.
Most of our members have taken various steps to cut operations costs and create guidelines and
frameworks for the way their organizations are going to function in the future. Working from home
has become the new normal and has provided a new way look at the way we work now. Many
organizations are urging most of their staff to continue to work from home which has greatly
reduced the need for office space. Many organizations are shifting to smaller office spaces, while
others are sharing their office space with others and still others are moving to business centres and
co-working environments. Many factories are working with very little labour and are forced to put in
longer hours, redefining the term "output per worker".
ELCOMA has also taken various actions in the light of this difficult situation. Our income for the
year would be severely impacted since no conferences or exhibitions are going to take place in the
near future. We have now shifted to an office that is one-third in size of our present office. ELCOMA
staff has agreed not to seek any salary increments this year and will take only half of their normal
bonuses this year.
But things cannot remain dark and gloomy forever. There is a new dawn after every dark night and
a silver lining to every grey cloud. Like always, human spirit and ingenuity will rise above all
adversity and we will bounce back stronger than before.
The festival of lights, Diwali, is round the corner. I hope that this Diwali brings cheer and goodwill
among all and like the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana, we are able to conquer the COVID
pandemic and its after-effects.
Wish you all a very Happy Diwali and a Happy New Year.

Thank you

ELCOMA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

AN AATMANIRBHAR LIGHTING
INDUSTRY
T
he Lighting Industry in India has predominantly been making all products in India for more
than 70 years now. When LED Lighting was launched in 2012-13, it was a very low volume
business and like CFL, the industry thought that we would be able to make all these LED
products in India in the next two to three years. When the new government came to power in
2014, ELCOMA's Vision 2020 was shared with the then Power Minister, Shri Piyush Goel, who
was impressed by the program and wanted to implement it immediately. He wanted the Indian
Lighting Industry to complete the targets prepared for the year 2020 by 2017-18. In 2014, EESL
was asked to take on the task of distribution of LED Lamps on a large scale and started procuring
LED Lamps for distribution to urban and rural areas across India. At that time, the Industry was not
prepared to supply LED lamps at such a large scale and therefore had to rely on importing various
components for manufacturing of the LED Lamps.
To realise the vision of “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” as envisioned by our Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri
Narendra Modi, the Government has decided to promote production of all inputs in India itself.
As you all are aware ELCOMA being a proactive association, has already prepared a “Vision-
2024” document for the Indian Lighting Industry, with the aim of promoting “Make in India” for
lighting products and to also prepare the industry for exports. We are looking forward to executing
this vision in four stages spread over the next four years.
I am glad to note that most of our ELCOMA members have endorsed this plan and are ready to
align with ELCOMA to execute the government's vision.
I am confident, we will be able to provide high-quality, world class products, which besides
meeting all local standards will be well accepted globally. I am also confident that ELCOMA will be
able to create a robust export market for lighting industry from India.
The completion of 50 years of ELCOMA was celebrated on Video Conferencing on the 29th of
June 2020. The event was attended by a large number of ELCOMA members and well-wishers
who were all glad to be a part of such a momentous occasion. Though the event was celebrated
“virtually” due to the pandemic, I am sure we will have a grand celebration whenever the first
opportunity to have a physical get-together arises.
I wish all our members good health, and look forward to working towards making India a “shining
spot” of international lighting industry.
Best wishes for the festive season and a Happy New Year to all.

With best wishes

1. India's energy sector can gain immensely from a boost to indigenous

manufacturing In-house manufacturing of products can bring down the cost of
technology, which can then cascade into lower prices for finished goods. Domestic
manufacturing has significant potential in the energy sector, with products such as
LED lights and we have already seen a major shift towards “Make in India” of goods
through the UJALA and Street Lighting National Programme initiative, which sets a
great Precedent.

2. For our LED programmes, we have partnered only with companies that
manufacture indigenously. This has created employment opportunities, triggered new
finished goods. Such measures have enabled EESL to benefit not only from better
quality of products suitable to Indian market but also the lowest procurement cost in
the world.

3. Policy measures such as the recent guidelines from the Ministry of Power, which
Stripulate that the supplier must conform to at least 70-80% localisation in creation of
the finished product can also galvanise domestic manufacturing and boost the local
economy.

With Yours sincerely
