What is Animal Science?
Importance of Animal Science and Animals.

Animal Science:

Animal science is the branch of agriculture which deals with the housing, feeding, breeding,
care and management of livestock and poultry including the processing and marketing of
animals and its products.

Livestock

Livestock are those animals which are domesticated, reproduce under human care and
provide financial supports to human.

Poultry

Poultry are those birds which are domesticated, reproduce under human care and provide
financial supports to human.

Domestication of Animals:

Domestication is the process of adapting wild animals for human uses.

The easiest animals to domesticate are herbivores that graze on vegetation, because they are
easiest to feed and the toughest animals to domesticate are carnivores which live on meat.
Cows, for instance, are easily domesticated.

Herbivores that eat grains are more difficult to domesticate than herbivores that graze.
Chickens are herbivores that eat seeds and grain.

Importance of Animals and Animal Science:

Animal Use as Food-

 Meat - (muscle tissue) Beef, Mutton, Chevon, Poultry(Chicken)

 Most efficient way to get protein

 Only way to harvest some natural resources like grass

 Milk - inexpensive source of protein

 Cheese, ice cream, yogurt

 Eggs – Almost complete foods

Animal Use as By-Products-

 Bones - buttons, glue, mineral supplement for livestock feed (Ca and P)

 Fat - chemicals, lubricants, soaps, food

 Glands - medicines, food additives

 Collagen - (connective tissue in joints) glue & gelatin

 Intestinal & Stomach tissue - lunch meats, surgical sutures, strings for musical &
sports instruments (contents = fertilizer)

 Feces – Compost manure.

Animals Uses as Clothing-

 Hides - leather
 Fibers - wool, mohair

Animals Use as Work-

 Cultivate land
 Transportation
 Control other animals
 Assist physically & mentally handicapped

Animals Uses in Medicine & Research-

 Drugs/medicine development
 Vaccine development
 Future treatment research

Animals Uses in-

War

 Animals were used in war for transportation and power

Religion

 Some societies worship animals. Example: Cows for Hindus.

Recreation

 Companionship and hobbies or sports such as horseback riding, horse race, Cock
fight, Bull fight etc.
