INTRODUCTION
In chemistry there is an array of chemical reactions that can be sorted in various
ways. However those reactions can simply be grouped into 4 different chemical
reaction, which are combination, decomposition, displacement and metathesis. A
precipitation may occur when two ionic solutions are mixed
A combination reaction occurs when tow substance or solutions and combined
together to form a new substance. One example of a combination reaction is the
combination of sodium and chlorine elements to produce sodium chloride.
A + B AB
Another reaction is the decomposition reaction, where one substance is
decomposed to form 2 products. This reaction is the complete opposite of the
combination reaction and one such example is the decomposition of calcium
carbonate to form calcium oxide and carbon dioxide when heat is applied.
AB A + B
Displacement is a reaction that happens when an element reacts with a compound
and replaces one of the original element to form an new compound and a new
element. An example for this reaction is when zinc reacts with hydrochloric acid . the
zinc will displace hydrogen to form zinc chloride and the hydrogen kicked out will
turn into hydrogen gas.
A + XY AY + X
A metathesis reaction is quite similar to a displacement reaction but in this
reaction both elements are replaced from their respective compound and exchanged
with the other solution. The reaction between potassium iodide and lead nitrate is one
example of a metathesis reaction where the product formed are potassium nitrate and
lead iodide.

b) Experiment B:
c) Experiment C:
i. Test Tube 1:
ii. Test Tube 2:
iii. Test Tube 3:

2. Experiment B, the decomposition reaction where a small amount of potassium

chlorate is heated and decomposes to release carbon dioxide gas bubbles.

3. We can tell if a chemical reaction has occur by observing the colour, state of
matter, temperature or smell after the substance has be mix together or heated.

DISCUSSION
During this experiment the reaction that we could observe was quite limited as
there were a few experiment that failed to show any such reactions after a period of
time. For example, Experiment A where the magnesium was suppose to react with the
oxygen in the air to form magnesium oxide. There was no reaction observed after the
3 minutes of heating time that was asked.
Another problem was we could not identify what was really happening in the
chemical reaction. We could not specify was the type of reaction that was occurring
based on the observations.
We would suggest using a more concentrated solution and increase the amount of
time needed to start the reaction. We can also use a catalyst to accelerate the reaction
time.
