Title of the Thesis

Dynamic Spectrum Management in Cognitive Radio Systems
Abstract of the Thesis
The extensive development of wireless networks and services and their increasing demand on
the radio spectrum; that is highly limited and expensive has ultimately led to a scarcity of
spectrum. Cognitive Radio (CR) is considered to be a novel approach to improve the
underutilization of precious radio resources by exploiting the unused licensed spectrum.
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is regarded as a technology which is
well matched for cognitive radio system. Designing effective resource allocation algorithms
for dynamic spectrum sharing and for power allocation in OFDM based CR systems is still a
challenging task. This thesis investigates resource allocation techniques for cognitive radio
systems.
Firstly, power allocation in an OFDM based CR system is considered. Power allocation
problem is mathematically formulated to maximize the capacity of the cognitive radio.
Statistical behavior of the primary and the secondary user are considered to formulate the
power allocation problem. Secondly, a resource allocation algorithm for multiuser OFDM
based CR system is studied. The interference introduced to Primary Users (PUs) is
completely considered, as well as a set of proportional rate constraints to ensure fairness
among Secondary Users (SUs). Secondary users are assumed to support heterogeneous
services. Next, a spectrum allocation problem based on particle swarm optimization is
presented to maximize the throughput of the secondary users with restricted transmit power
and primary user interference. In order to avoid the problem of PSO being trapped in local
optima, simulated annealing is also integrated. Finally, a RAP framework for spectrum
management in a cognitive Radio is developed. The scheme chosen deems it a necessity to
take into consideration the inaccuracy of spectrum sensing in order to achieve the desired
optimal performance. Unlike the widely used schemes which solely depend on local
interference measurements, the proposed probabilistic framework aims at enhancing the CRN
good put by incorporating interference measurements performed at the receiver into the
protocol. Moreover, the spectrum management scheme, discussed in the study, makes most of
the least exploitable spectral opportunities by relying on low power rate communication
robust to interference
