PRACTICE 1

a. First, watch the video and write sentence with simple present
tense (use the “Chemical engineering” vocabulary).

1. Chemical engineers take all the same calculus classes as other engineering disciplines.
2. You need to design all the safety components.
3. Chemical engineer designs the plant, the reactors, etc.
4. A chemist learns more about the reactions on a smaller scale.
5. In general chemistry you go more into depth about laws of chemistry concepts.
6. In organic chemistry you learn about carbon containing compounds.
7. In physical chemistry you learn about quantum physics and how it applies to
chemistry.
8. They have large reactors that make the beer.
9. In a small scale you can just pour material like yeast.
10. If the reaction happens too fast, problems occur.

b. Defina qué es la “Chemical engineering”.

- Chemical Engineering is defined as an engineering discipline that

involves designing processes to transport, transform and produce
material.
- Chemical engineers have knowledge of physics, chemistry,
biology and math to design these processes; and they have a
wide range of career they can go into which is definitely a perk of
this major.
- Chemical engineers focus mainly on chemical process design.
c. Uso de la ““Chemical engineering”.

Chemical engineering can be used in:

- Biotechnology in the pharmaceutical industry where you design
facilities that use enzymes and microorganisms to create new drugs
companies.
- Environmental engineering applications in which they tray to reduce
the volume of pollutants.
- Semiconductors and electronics, in companies that design and
manufacture microchips and other computer parts.
- Industrial chemicals like detergents, soaps and cosmetics.
- Food production, wine and other alcoholic beverages.
- An oil refinery that turns crude oil from the earth into gasoline, diesel
fuel, heating oil, etc.
- Alternative energy, for example the solar cells.

d. Write a glossary.

 Transform: Change the nature of reactants in chemical products.

 Catalytic converter: It´s a substance that accelerates the reaction rate.

 Chemical reactions: Thermodynamics processes when one or more substances

are transformed.

 Engineering: Set of scientific and technological knowledge for the innovation,

invention, development and improvement of techniques.

 Scale-up: Taking a small reaction and scaling it to happen on a large scale.

 Chemical processes: Set of chemical and physical operations in the industry.

 Reactor: It’s an equipment where the reaction happens.

 Molarity: Indicates the concentration in the chemical solution.

 Pressure: Amount of force exerted per unit area.

 Small scale: Means producing in small quantities

 Solution: A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances.

 Oil: It´s a mixture of organic compounds.

 Environmental problem: Problem referred to nature.

 Sizing: Technique used for scale a production of materials.

 Industry: Set of facilities dedicated to the productive activity of materials.

 Biotechnology: Science applied to biological processes.

II) Registrar un glosario con palabras técnicas del video “ BREVE HISTORIA DE LA QUÍMICA”.
(mínimo 10)

– Crystallization: It’s a separation method in which the formation of a solid (crystal or

precipitate) occurs from a homogeneous, liquid or gaseous phase.
– Distillation: It’s the process of separating the components or substances from a liquid mixture
by using selective boiling and condensation.
– Filtration: It’s the unitary process of separating solids in a suspension through a mechanical
means such as a sieve or filter.
– Chemical Property: It's any property of matter by which it changes of composition.
– Chemical Process: It's a set of chemical and/or physical operations aimed at transforming
initial substances into different final products.
– Sulfuric Acid: It’s an extremely corrosive chemical compound that is used in the petrochemical
industry.

– Plastic Material: Plastics are called materials consisting of a variety of organic, synthetic or
semisynthetic compounds, which have the property of being malleable and can therefore be
molded into solid objects in various ways. This property gives plastics a wide variety of
applications.

– Liquefaction: Occurs when vibrations or water pressure inside a soil mass causes soil particles
to lose contact with each other.

– Sublimation: It is defined as sublimation to the act and consequence of sublimation, i.e. moving
directly from solid to steam state.

– Molding: The process of modifying solid materials through molds to obtain parts with a certain
shape.

– Accurate Balance: The precision balance is basically a first-genre lever and equal arms, it
serves to find the mass of the bodies, balancing them with units called weights.
