DESIGN
JUSTICE
NETWORK
OVERVIEW
The Design Justice Network aims to heal, sustain, and
empower the communities we work with. We do so to
liberate people from exploitative and oppressive
systems. We learn from conversations and meetings
with people and colleagues across an intersection of
disciplines and activism. Research and social media
also help us to take action. The main goal of the
network is to stimulate a conversation around the
existing bias within our design practices and develop
new methods and approaches that support a just
society - one in which power is equally distributed
across both the decision-making and the benefits.
This begins by focusing on those who are in
traditionally marginalised communities. We seek to
build the community of diverse people working
towards their goal in Scotland and the U.K.

INSTAGRAM
Instagram can be used for posting what is currently going
on with the DJN UK Node. It can be used for direct
engagement with the audience. The content can include
posts about upcoming meetings, information graphics,
weekly updates, and member spotlights. The use of graphics
are able to highlight key information and the captions can
be used to go into more details to keep the audience up to
date on everything going on with the node. When posting, it
is important to keep a theme and have a preset for all the
posts so they can all have a cohesive look. Instagram has the
feature of uploading stories that can be more casual than a
post and only last on the page for 24 hours. Stories can be
used as a reminder for the upcoming meetings and
reposting our own graphics. You can then create story
highlights if you want them to last longer than 24 hours.

If going for a more "no design" design feel,


@aigaeyeondesign does a great job of not having a set
design theme or color scheme on their feed, but still
maintaining a visually engaging and cohesive, professional
look.

Tip: to organize posts and schedule times to post them, use


Hootsuite and a shared Google Drive or Dropbox folder!
FACEBOOK
DJN Scotland can utilize Facebook to inform people of
different events that are currently happening and to
keep users updated.

Facebook has a great feature of creating groups, being


able to share information to a specific audience. Groups
can be created with community members and people
interested in the node to share updates and talk about
design justice. Facebook also lets you create events and
invite people who are interested. It's a great platform to
create these groups and events to get people interested
and informed. Updates and meetings should be posted
on Facebook regularly to keep the followers up to date
and to allow them to spread current information about
what the DJN is up to.

TWITTER
Twitter a good platform for connecting with other
organizations and sharing content outside of the DJN
that is related to the mission of design justice. Part of this
involves following accounts with similar messages and
missions and retweeting their content. This can expand
the following and introduce design justice to people who
may be interested in joining.

Meeting updates and information can also be shared on


Twitter. Twitter has a large focus on words, not
necessarily images like the other social media platforms.
Retweets play a major part in this difference and are
important in networking with other groups and people
interested in the same ideology.

on Twitter. Share some content here too.
