VIII. COURSE DESCRIPTION
This book has been designed by the authors to provide the college students the ability to further understand the life of our national hero.
Dr. Jose P. Rizal, particularly through his writing and attempt to introduce the context of the assumption that the death of Dr. Jose P. Rizal in not the
end of his journey but the beginning of his significant contributions to the development of nationalism.
The key purpose of the book is to encourage the students to examine the course not only as a requirement to accomplish but to emulate the
laudable contributions and vigorous sacrifices of Dr. Jose P. Rizal as an individual and as a hero. The authors used the record and account of Rizal’s
life including the letters to his correspondents as well as the manuscripts written by the official biographers. The story of his life is of vital importance
in analyzing his writings from his time in relation to the present.
This is of great importance to our nation in as much as the national hero deserves particular honor through the centuries. An in-depth study of
Rizal’s literary works especially the two great novels’ Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, would provide a potent argument for the adage that “the
pen is mightier than the sword” in the light of the fact that the aforementioned works awakened Filipino Nationalism and paved the way for Philippine
Revolution against the abusive Spanish rules of the 19 th century.
The authors employed the historical, biographical and analytical approaches, which have at its heart and core, the need to interweave the
highlights of Rizal’s life, writings, and teachings. Primarily his life gave birth to the development of the Filipino consciousness that led to the making of
a nation that we can be proud of. Each chapter of the book provides activities that give students the opportunity to look back to important concepts
and information. It has interesting questions that should explain, describes, and reflects developing psychological development and higher order
thinking skills.
Varied strategies and activities that include decision-making, critical thinking, self-awareness, effective oral and written communication and
interpersonal relationship are utilized in the lessons in order for the students’ experiences to become meaningful and fruitful for the attainment of
Rizal’s hope for our youth as well as the university’s mission and vision.
