Newsletter for The Beautiful Social Research Collaborative and Our Community

B:Social During COVID-19

During the COVID-19 pandemic, our student consultants
worked together and met their community partners OVERVIEW:
virtually. Although we missed being able to work together
in person, this allowed us to open new doors and bring new

Summary of Fall 2020 and
the course of the 2020-2021 academic year, B:Social was
able to partner with a few international organizations. This Spring 2021 Partners
exposed our students to new networks and really allowed Summer With B:Social
us to connect to groups whose experiences differ from our Looking Forward to Fall 2021

FALL 2020 PARTNERS

Design Justice
Network UK
The Design Justice Network aims to heal, sustain, and
empower the communities they work with. They do
so to liberate people from exploitative and
oppressive systems. They learn from conversations
and meetings with people and colleagues across an
intersection of disciplines and activism. Research and
social media also help them to take action. The main
goal of the network is to stimulate a conversation around the existing bias within our design practices
and develop new methods and approaches that support a just society - one in which power is equally
distributed across both the decision-making and the benefits. This begins by focusing on those who are
in traditionally marginalized communities.

B:Social students worked with the Scotland node of the network, which was brand new and trying to
define their personal brand. Students worked on branding and media reports during their time
collaborating with the community partner.

Chenoa Manor
Chenoa Manor is an animal sanctuary and a
learning center located in Chester County, PA.
Chenoa Manor takes in animals who were
previously abused by factory farming, cruelty, or
hoarding situations; others were subjected to
laboratory experiments or simply abandoned in the
wild and left to fend for themselves. Chenoa Manor
is a volunteer run farm and has no paid staff,
therefore relying on the public’s contributions to support the costs to upkeep the farm and animals.
Chenoa Manor serves the animals to make sure that they are not exploited. There are also events on
the farm, like art and photography classes.

The group’s role in the project was to help Chenoa Manor raise funds for repairs and animal feed
through social media, while simultaneously revamping Chenoa Manor’s social media across multiple
platforms. Due to the group's extensive fundraising efforts, approximately $1,500 was raised for
Chenoa Manor based solely on their social media campaigns. More than 9 bales of hay were donated to
help the farm and animals too!

Disabled Collective
The Disabled Collective is a non-profit organization
based out of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada,
whose main focus is navigating disability in higher
education and giving a voice to the crip community.
Their main goal was to create an editorial that
discusses disability and disability-related topics
through student-told stories. The main goal of
Disabled Collective is to dismantle stigmas and
misconceptions about disability, amplify the voices of
misconceptions about disability, amplify the voices of disabled students, and show the importance of
disabled students, and show the importance of
disability experiences in conversations about equity, diversity and inclusion within higher education.

diversity and inclusion within higher education.
The ability of the Collective to perform at a greater capacity was improved through the Beautiful Social
group’s efforts in coming up with and creating themes and aesthetics that best embodied what the
Collective was about and using them in mood boards and the website that our students designed.

Healey Foundation
The Healey International Relief Foundation (HIRF)
is based in Sierra Leone, West Africa. The
organization strives to improve the quality of life
for vulnerable people in Sierra Leone. They do this
by supplying healthcare, education, medical
supplies, and school supplies to the people of Sierra
Leone. Specifically, the organization provides
medicines, tons of rice, money for room and board,
tuition, education money through their scholarship program, money to help support the health
facilities, clothes, and blankets.

B:Social students used photos and videos provided by Vicki, the main point of contact for the
partnership, and create consistent, simple and creative templates as well as an editorial calendar for
their social media pages. With a more cohesive design for Healey’s organization, we hope that they will
be able to gain more followers, which will ultimately lead to more user engagement. In the near future,
we hope a larger audience will eventually lead to more donations.
SPRING 2021 PARTNERS

Mark Dombroski
Foundation
The Mark Dombroski Foundation began after Mark
unfortunately passed in March of 2018 on the SJU
Men’s Rugby trip to Bermuda. Mark’s family and
friends felt it was important to maintain his legacy.
Being inspired by Mark’s passion for athletics and
education, the foundation’s mission is to support
organizations that promote youth education,
athletics, safety, and well-being. While supporting other organizations through funding, The Mark
Dombroski Foundation started their own project in their local community that supports the youth. The
foundation is creating a playground which will be known as ‘Mark's Park,’ an accessible playground for
the kids of all abilities and ages to come together in Mark’s hometown.

B:Social students worked to plan an event to help fundraise for this park. The walk served as a
memorial to Mark, and raised over $15,000 from tickets, donations, and sponsorships.

Women in Nonprofit
Leadership
This group of B:Social students was tasked with
planning and executing the 3rd annual Women In
Leadership event, hosted by the Collaborative. This
event would feature a panel of B:Social and Saint
Joe's alumni who now hold leadership positions in
both nonprofits and other inspiring roles. This
event is an incredible opportunity for current
students to hear their stories and to network and gain knowledge from them. Due to the pandemic,
this event was held via Zoom.

There were about 35 students and faculty that attended this event. Students who attended were able
to make great connections. You can find the video to watch a recording of the event on the Beautiful
Social website.

Internews
South Sudan
Internews provides trustworthy information and
media resources to communities throughout the
world. Their goal is to stop the spread of
misinformation in locations that lack reliable news
outlets. Specifically, Internews in South Sudan has
dedicated the last fifteen years to serving in the
country by providing its people with trustworthy
media outlets. Their perseverance allowed them to
build one of the first radio networks in South Sudan.

headquarters. We met directly with the South Sudan team, who then received updates from HQ. The
original plan was for the B:Social team to create a website or webpage specifically focused on the
South Sudan branch. Even though the students never got into designing, this process exposed our
students to the world of nonprofits in a way not experienced before.

Beautiful Social
One team of SJU consultants worked with the
Collaborative itself. Their goal was to create a set
of videos that answers, “What is the Beautiful
Social Research Collaborative?” With hours upon
hours of final reflection footage to pour through,
their main goal was to find the footage that really
speaks to the work and mission of B:Social. The
process was to split up the group, some looking for

SUMMER 2021 Exciting Things Are
Happening!
Beautiful Social is fortunate enough to have two interns working this summer on various projects. We are
working on preparing our fall collaborations, revamping our social media presence, and updating the
website with all of our exciting projects from this past year! We are also hoping to plan a fun Friendsgiving
event for this fall semester to bring our community together for the first time (safely) since the start of the
pandemic. Big things are happening for B:Social with the help of our interns, their supervisor, and our
incoming Foley Fellows!

FALL 2021 Looking Forward
to Next Semester
Beautiful Social is lucky to be welcoming three new Foley Fellows to our team. This fellowship is the first at
Saint Joseph's to combine research in emerging media technologies with social justice. We are thrilled to
give our students the opportunity to do important work in their prospective fields and create change in our
communities. We are looking forward to seeing what our new fellows and their consultants will accomplish
in the upcoming semester.
