Automotive Management Capstone

Artifact 1-1: Extended Interval Business Case

Matt Manatrey

Automotive Management Foundations, AMGT 300-001, Fall 2019

Program Learning Outcome: Propose a business plan for the maintenance of a fleet of vehicles

Executive Summary:

The Fleet Maintenance Extended Interval Business Case consists of an Executive Summary, problem
statement, analysis of the situation, the solution, and the recommendation and implementation. For this
project, I was the owner of a European Automotive Shop that had interest from a company about
maintaining their fleet of 2015 MINI S Hardtop 4-door vehicles that were used by their sales team.

This project required many hours of research on the OEM recommended maintenance schedules, and
other things such as labor times for these jobs, tools required, and whether or not we could provide
excellent customer service and quality of work while documenting concerns that the customer, the
owner, and the manager had with maintaining this fleet of MINI’s.

Reflection:

This was my very first project in the AMGT Program here at Ferris State, and when this project was
assigned to me, I knew right then and there the vehicle that would be my fleet, MINI Hardtops. I have
been with the MINI brand since 2006, and I have done many events thorough the years on the regional
and national level with MINI, I have even made newspaper headlines since I am the president of the
local MINI Cooper club in my hometown. My expertise on the brand and the vehicles were key in order
to be successful on this project.

When the course began, I thought this course would be something that I would not use every day. Once
I started the coursework, I realized that I was very wrong. This course taught a lot of the fundamentals
that would be used in later AMGT courses, and a lot of the applications were very similar to later AMGT
classes as well. A lot of the coursework was shown to be over the internet as well, which helped when
the COVID-19 pandemic made all classes, not just AMGT courses completely online.

When I started the Extended Interval project, we utilized many resources available to AMGT students
through Ferris State, one of them being access to Alldata, which is used by many automotive repair
shops to look up procedures and specifications directly from the OEM. Alldata provided Ferris State
Students unlimited access to this through Ferris States Library, FLITE.
When this project started, I thought that fleet management would not be for me, but from this project, I
became interested in fleet management and it was something that I even considered getting into after I
was finished with the program here. This was just the beginning of myself making maintenance plans for
vehicle’s, but it is something that I look at when buying a car today, since many vehicles and vehicle
manufacturers have long forgone the usual 3-month, 3,000-mile oil change.

Since this was my first class in the AMGT Program, going into this class I had no experience with any type
of management classes or how to do anything related to management such as a business plan or a fleet
maintenance schedule. This class provided me with the foundations that helped cement some of the
ideas and documents that helped me succeed in the program and learn all about management.
