PETR 5314 SRP HW

It is desired to put on pump a Gulf Coast well having a static fluid level of 1000 ft. The well fluid has a
40% water cut, with oil of gravity 40 API and water specific gravity 1.015. The installation is to be
designed for an oil production of 125 bbl/day. To prevent tubing buckling, it is decided to set a tension
anchor at the pump depth of 4500’. Reservoir studies and well fluid analyses indicate a probable pump
volumetric efficiency of at least 80%. The mean yearly surface temperature at the well is 70 F.

a) Determine the API rating of the pumping unit assembly to be purchased for this installation.
b) Determine, for the proposed installation, polished rod stroke length, optimum plunger size, and
resulting tubing size and pumping speed.
c) Design the sucker rod string, assuming sucker rods to b available in lengths of 25’.
d) Calculate the actual oil production for the assumed volumetric efficiency and the operating
condition of part b.
e) An example of a pumping unit assembly which meets the requirements of parts a and b is the
Lufkin …... This unit has a beam load rating of …….. lb, an available counterbalance effect
(without auxiliary counterweights) of …….lb, and a peak torque rating of ………. In-lb. Compare
these values with calculated values of peak polished rod load, ideal counterbalance effect, and
probable peak torque under the selected operating conditions.
f) What is the maximum sucker rod stress under the selected operating conditions; what type of
rods could be used if the well fluid contains hydrogen sulfide?
g) Determine the minimum brake horsepower rating for the electric motor to be used as the prime
mover.
h) The standard unit sheave for the Lufkin …. Pumping assembly has a pitch diameter of …. In, and
the double reduction gear has a reduction ration of ….. If motor speed is 1200 rpm, what should
be the pitch diameter of the motor sheave to obtain the desired pumping speed?
i) After setting the anchor on the tubing it is necessary to provide sufficient tension for prevention
of buckling. Determine the effective pickup for surface fluid temperatures of 110, 100, and 90 F.
