Before carrying out repairs:

CAUTION
Turn the starter key to the stop position before
disconnecting the negative battery cable!

Turn the starter key to the stop position and remove the
cable from the battery negative terminal before doing any
of the following: T8006862

• Attaching and removing special tool 998 8695.

• Connection and disconnection of connectors and


cables.

• Connection and disconnection of SRS components.

• Removal or installing SRS components.

• Measuring with a multimeter.

During repair:

WARNING
The battery must not be connected when removing or
fitting any of the SRS components.

Special tool 998 8695 must be connected once the airbag


module has been removed (unless stated otherwise in
the instructions).
If the SRS system is connected to power while the airbag
module is removed (and the special tool has not been
connected), a fault code will be registered that must be T8006845

cleared later.

WARNING
Under no circumstances may an ohm meter or other
current-carrying instrument to be used to measure
resistance in an airbag module or belt tensioner.

After repair:

WARNING
Make sure that nobody is in the cab when the battery
is connected.

Once all the components in the cab have been fitted and
secured, perform in the following order:
1 First turn the starter key to the drive position.

2 Then reconnect the negative battery cable.

SRS components, torque values

The following tightening torques apply to the SRS components:

Airbag module, replace

WARNING
Never drive with a deployed airbag! Because it is
hanging out, the airbag can make steering difficult.
Other safety systems may also be damaged.
Long term exposure to the smoke and dust formed
when the airbag is triggered can cause skin and eye
irritation.

Removal

CAUTION
Turn the starter key to the stop position before
disconnecting the negative battery cable!

Disconnect the power to the vehicle by removing the


battery negative cable.

WARNING
The battery must not be connected when removing or
fitting any of the SRS components.

Turn the starter key to the drive position.

Undo the two screws underneath the steering wheel
(Torx 27).

Note: The screws are kept in place with metal washers.

Unplug the connector from the airbag module.

Lift the airbag module straight up.

WARNING
Undeployed airbag modules must not be triggered,
neither when fitted nor when removed/loose. The local
retailer has information concerning local destruction of
pyrotechnic devices. Where this is not available, airbag
modules, belt tensioners and control units should
be returned to Volvo.

WARNING
Airbag modules must not be disassembled, repaired or
transferred to other vehicles. Never use an ohmmeter
or any other current-carrying measuring instrument on
a disconnected, non-activated airbag module. There is
a risk that this could trigger the airbag module! Never
drive with a deployed airbag! The airbag can, when
hanging out, impede steering. Other safety systems
may also be damaged. Airbag modules must not be
placed over a naked flame because of the risk of an
accident when the airbag is triggered.

WARNING
Under no circumstances may an ohm meter or other
current-carrying instrument to be used to measure
resistance in an airbag module or belt tensioner.

Fitting

Place the bottom section of the airbag module against the
steering wheel.

Connect the connector to the airbag module.

Fit two screws underneath the steering wheel (Torx 27).

CAUTION
Check that the leads are not pinched when fitting.

CAUTION
First tighten the left screw, and then the right.

CAUTION
Ensure that no foreign particles (metal cuttings etc) can
enter the airbag module contact pin (the detonator).

10 ± 2 Nm

Turn the starter key to drive position and exit the vehicle.

WARNING
Make sure that nobody is in the cab when the battery
is connected. Windows and doors must be closed.

Connect the negative battery cable.

Start the vehicle and check that the airbag warning lights
goes out and that there are no fault codes.

Contact reel, replace
Removal

Remove the airbag module according to “Airbag module,
replace” page 5.

Remove the screw in the centre of the steering wheel.

Undo the screw in the end of the plastic strip.

Tighten the screw in the contact reel (the screw must
always be left in the plastic strip). The contact reel is
now locked (secured) in position.
Note: The steering wheel must not be turned while the
contact reel is locked. Lift off the steering wheel without
turning it. Allow the lead and the plastic strip to pass
through the hole in the steering wheel.

Remove the steering column covers and the six screws
from the front and rear steering column covers.

Undo the three contact reel screws.

Unplug the ignition lead connector.

Unplug the connector for the horn button.

Remove the contact reel.

Remove the steering angle sensor from the contact
reel and save it for refitting on the new contact reel.
(Applies to ESP.)

Fitting

Fit the old steering angle sensor to the new contact
reel. (Applies to ESP.)

Attach the contact reel with three screws.

2.5 Nm

Plug in the connectors for the horn and the ignition lead.

Fit the steering column covers.

Fit the steering wheel.

Move the locking screw for the contactreel to the empty
hole in the steering wheel.

Fit the steering wheel centre screw and tighten it.

85 ± 10 Nm

Calibrate the steering angle sensor. Please refer to
service information group 59 “Fault codes EBS/ESP”.

Removal

CAUTION
Turn the starter key to the stop position before
disconnecting the negative battery cable!

Disconnect the power to the vehicle by removing the

fitting any of the SRS components.

Grip the seat cushion at the rear edge. Move the lever at
the front of the cushion upwards and to the side. Pull
the seat cushion forwards and turn it up on its side.
Disconnect the wiring.

Note: Before refitting, check that sliding pins on the seat


base are undamaged. Check that the slide groove on the
underside of the seat cushion is undamaged.

Remove the backrest rear covers and seatbelt as in figure.


Note: On De Luxe seats the screws for the rear cover
and the seat base are reached from underneath.

WARNING
Under no circumstances may an ohm meter or other

Fitting

Refit the parts according to the figure.

CAUTION
Ensure no foreign objects (metal cuttings, etc.) are
allowed to enter the belt tensioner contact pin
(detonator).

Place the seat cushion so that the rear slide groove on its
underside fits over the rear sliding pins. Push lightly on
the rear of the seat cushion and move the lever at the
front of the cushion to its original position.

Push the seat cushion down and press it backwards so


that the fixtures lock the seat cushion at all four points.

Note: Check that the position of the seat cushion is
locked.
When refitting the seat cushion, it is very important to
ensure that the seat cushion is fixed at all 4 attachment
points.

Turn the starter key to drive position and exit the vehicle.

WARNING
Make sure no one else is in the cab. Windows and

Connect the negative battery cable.

Start the vehicle and check that the airbag warning lights
goes out and that there are no fault codes.
