CRTi® & CRTe® Casing Running Tools

STREAML NE
SUCCESS
Eliminating the risk associated with safety and efficiency in
the well construction process has never been easier. Since
2005, Volant’s fully mechanical casing running tools with
patented TAWG™ torque activated wedge grip have proven
to be the safest and most efficient, reliable, and cost-effec-
tive means to successfully install casing and liner. From the
largest surface sections to the longest, heaviest and most
challenging laterals, Volant casing running tools continue to
advance what’s possible in casing and liner installation, both
onshore and offshore.

Our internal grip CRTi® and external grip CRTe® tools em-
power the driller to take full control of the casing running
operation while significantly reducing the on-site presence
of people and equipment. Quickly installed to the top drive,
tool operation is intuitive – set down and rotate to the right
– utilizing top drive controls with no need for a third-party
control panel, operator or external power unit. This all-in-one
tool enables the driller to reliably make up and break out
connections while providing on-demand functionality to hoist,
circulate, reciprocate, fill and rotate casing and liner, ensuring
the best chances of successfully landing the string as quick-
ly and safely as possible. The tools can also be cemented
through, allowing for a seamless transition from casing and
liner installation to cementing operations.

With a proven track record as the most capable and reliable tools for use in casing while drilling
(CwD) applications, Volant casing running tools offer high hoist, flow and torque capacities combined
with unlimited RPM and industry leading set-down capacities to help achieve your best results.
BOTTOM LINE
PERFORMANCE
From rig up to rig down and every step along the way,
Volant CRTi® and CRTe® tools streamline operations and
bring enhanced safety, efficiency, reliability, and effec-
tiveness to the well construction process, reducing
non-productive time and elevating your bottom line.

ON THE RIG
Operated by the driller, bringing efficiency and enhanced
safety to the process.

This enables a step change in safety during casing and

liner installation by removing people from the red-zone
and eliminating dangerous equipment from the rig
floor. Utilizing existing rig crews with minimal additional
manpower and equipment minimizes scheduled
downtime when transitioning to and from casing
running operations and allows casing to be installed
without the need of third party operations.

IN THE WELLBORE
Improving well construction efficiency and the quality of
challenging wells.

When directional or horizontal wells are drilled into

unstable formations, it is often necessary to circulate,
reciprocate, and rotate the string during installation to
advance the pipe. The Volant CRTi/CRTe with its torque
activated wedge grip provides a mechanical interlock to
prevent pipe slippage under changing load conditions,
instilling confidence the tool will perform each time.

CRTi® Internal Grip Casing Running Tool
Volant’s CRTi® casing running tool is fully mechanical and designed for casing running or drilling
with top drive equipped rigs to makeup, breakout, reciprocate, rotate, fill, circulate and cement
casing and liner strings, reducing non-productive time and associated costs. The standard CRTi tool
uses intuitive operations for pipe engagement and release – stab, rotate to the right to engage and
reverse to disengage. A simple rig-up and rig-down further increases operational efficiency. This tool
is mechanically activated in tension and both rotational directions by top drive control using TAWG™
wedge grip.

Starting from the insertion diameter of the base tool (cage OD), selectable sizes of integral jaws/
dies are used to configure the CRTi to support gripping casing of increasing internal diameter.
Through the use of a patented extended reach die structure, the gripping diameter can be further
increased to include casing sizes much greater than the base tool.

casing is smaller than the cage OD. 0.01336 ft.lbs/psi/ppf × 11,6 ppf × 80,000 psi = 12,398 ft.lbs

Step 3: Die Selection Refer to the die table below or

Step 4: Die Hoist Capacity Tool hoist rating is based Step 6: Effect of Circulation Pressure CRTi
on API Specifications 8C; however casing load limit is further hoist capacity must be reduced by the pressure end load
constrained by local interaction of slip dies with casing, which during circulation. The hoist reduction (FEndPressure) depends on
must not exceed the efficiency indicated for individual slip die circulation pressure (P), casing nominal ID (IDcasing) and CRTi
sizes to avoid excess deformation. The slip to casing interaction through hole (IDmandrel).
hoist limit (Fdie) can be found by the following formula where
efficiency is the slip to pipe body load (listed in the following FEndPressure = 0.79 × P × (ID2casing - ID2mandrel)
table for every die) and Fcasing is the casing hoist limit found in
API Bulletin 5C2. For example, for circulation pressure of 500 psi (3.4 MPa) and
casing nominal ID of 3.92 in. (99.6 mm) the hoist reduction is:
Fdie = efficiency x Fcasing
0.79 × 500 psi × ((3.92 in.)2 - (1.0 in.)2) = 5,675 lbs ~ 2.8 ton
For example, from API 5C2 the pipe body yield for 4.5 in. x
11.6 ppf L80 (114.3 mm x 17.26 kg/m L80) casing is 267,000 lbs or
(121.1 tonne). The slip efficiency for slip die 80957 used to run
this casing is 80%. Therefore, the die hoist limit is: 0.79 × 3.4 MPa × ((99.6 mm)2 - (25.4 mm)2) = 24,913 N ~ 2.5
tonne
80% × 267,000 lbs = 213,600 lbs = 106.8 ton
Therefore, the maximum hoist for the CRTi2-4.5 tool reduces
or to 120.0 - 2.8 = 117.2 ton (106.3 tonne) or the maximum hoist
for die 80957 (in step 4) must reduce to 106.8 - 2.8 = 104.0 ton
80% × 121.1 tonne = 96.8 tonne (94.3 tonne).

1. Characteristics are based on standard tool components and are independent of specific limitations of cage and accessories.
2. Maximum allowable set-down load applied to the tool. Some set-down load may be reacted through the coupling. This rating does not take into account
bearing load limitations of the coupling.
3. CRTi circulation pressure capacity is generally governed by packer cup pressure capacity. Pressure capacity may be less than indicated if alternative seal
arrangements are used.
4. Base tool length does not include casing seal assembly. To find overall tool length see Casing Seal Assembly and Overall Tool Length table.
5. Tool weight is approximate and represents 4.5 in. base tool configuration. Contact Volant sales for further information on tool weight at +1 780.784.7099
6. Maximum flow rate is based on minimizing erosion rates when using typical fluids. Erosion rates may vary depending upon the fluid contents. Please
inspect tool bore regularly.
7. When rotating a casing/liner string during running/drilling operations, maximum rotational speeds are governed by top drive or casing connection specific limits.
8. Common integral slip sizes shown. All API casing sizes and weights with drift diameter above 3.79 in (96.27 mm) are available.
9. Maximum pipe weight is defined by the API Specification 5CT drift diameter of the heaviest weight casing into which the CRTi assembled with the
specified integral slip set will fit.
10. Indicated minimum pipe weight is based on the assumption that control of average pipe inside diameter over integral slip grip interval does not allow
pipe body area reduction less than 3.5% from nominal and additionally takes into account tool wear allowances, integral slip penetration, casing defor-
mation and diametrical stroke.

1. Characteristics are based on standard tool components and are independent of specific limitations of cage and accessories.
2. Maximum allowable set-down load applied to the tool. Some set-down load may be reacted through the coupling. This rating does not take into
account bearing load limitations of the coupling.
3. CRTi tool circulation pressure capacity is generally governed by packer cup pressure capacity. Pressure capacity may be less than indicated if
alternative seal arrangements are used.
4. Base tool length does not include casing seal assembly. To find overall tool length see Casing Seal Assembly and Overall Tool Length table.
5. Tool weight is approximate and represents 5.5 in. base tool configuration. Contact Volant sales for further information on tool weight at +1
780.784.7099
6. Maximum flow rate is based on minimizing erosion rates when using typical fluids. Erosion rates may vary depending upon the fluid contents.
Please inspect tool bore regularly.
7. When rotating a casing/liner string during running/drilling operations, maximum rotational speeds are governed by top drive or casing connection
specific limits.
8. Turns to Stoke Out is the rotational limit during tool makeup (this may be exceeded in combined load scenarios). The old style cams require 1.30
turns to stroke out and low-release cams only require 0.66 turns to stroke out.
9. Common die sizes shown. All API casing sizes and weights with drift diameter above 4.54 in (115.3 mm) are available.
10. Maximum pipe weight is defined by the API Specification 5CT drift diameter of the heaviest weight casing into which the CRTi tool assembled
with the specified die set will fit.
11. Indicated minimum pipe weight is based on the assumption that control of average pipe inside diameter over die grip interval does not allow pipe
body area reduction less than 3.5% from nominal and additionally takes into account tool wear allowances, die penetration, casing
deformation and diametrical stroke.
12. CRTi1,2-5.5 Cage (P/N: 81128) when run in conjunction with Integral Slips (P/N: 81129) enable running 5.5” 23.0ppf casing, with a
reduced torque capacity of 20,000 ft.lbs. CRTi1,2-5.5 Integral Slips 80913, 82165, 80981, 82013, 81284 and 83076 can also be run
with Cage (P/N: 81128) with a reduced torque capacity of 20,000 ft.lbs.

The CRTi3-7.0 is available with various retrofit upgrades to improve function and performance, as well
as enable a broader range of applications. The ActiveSET™ upgrade enables all variants of the CRTi3-7.0
to engage in one step by stabbing the tool into the casing joint; the high-capacity mandrel upgrade
(CRTi3-7.0HC350) uses higher strength material to achieve an increased rated hoist capacity; the
high-flow mandrel (CRTi3-7.0HF240) has a larger through hole and a modified casing seal assembly
arrangement to support higher fluid flow rate requirements for Casing while Drilling (CwD) operations.
All CRTi3-7.0 tools now come standard with upgraded low-release cams that reduce the turns
required to set and release the tool. All configurations are mechanically activated in tension and both
rotational directions by top drive control using patented TAWG™ torque activated wedge grip.

Tool Selection Guide
Step 1: Base Tool Selection The CRTi is available in a Step 4: Die Torque Capacity
variety of dimensions and ratings. The Base Tool Characteristics Tdie = Ktorque x Wcasing x σYcasing
table contains the ratings and overall dimensions of the tool.
The required hoist, torque, set-down load capacity and max- Where Tdie is the torque limit due to slip die/casing interaction,
imum flow rate must be lower than or equal to the base tool K torque is the torque factor,
rating. If combined hoist and torque is required for the casing Wcasing is the desired casing weight in ppf (kg/m), and
running job, the combined hoist and torque point must fall
σYcasing is the casing yield strength in psi (MPa)
below or on the combined load operation curve.
If no value is provided, tool rating will be limiting for all stan-
Step 2: Die Selection All API casing sizes and weights dard casing grades. For example, for die 82157 to run 9.63 in.
with drift diameter above 5.87 in. (149.1 mm) are available for x 40.0 ppf L80 (244.5 mm x 59.53 kg/m L80) casing, the die
this tool. Find the appropriate die for casing size and weight torque limit is:
in the die table below. Some dies can run a range of casing
weights. 0.01587 ft.lbs/psi/ppf × 40.0 ppf × 80,000 psi = 50,784 ft.lbs

Step 3: Die Hoist Capacity Tool hoist rating is based or

on API Specifications 8C; however casing load limit is further
2.097 N.m/MPa/(kg/m) × 59.53 kg/m × 551.6 MPa = 68,858
constrained by local interaction of slip dies with casing, which
N.m
must not exceed the efficiency indicated for individual slip die
sizes to avoid excess deformation. The slip to casing interaction Where the base tool torque capacity is lower than the die
hoist limit (Fdie) can be found by the following formula where torque capacity, the tool is limited to base tool torque capacity.
efficiency is the slip to pipe body load efficiency number (listed
in the following table for every die) and Fcasing is the casing hoist
limit found in API Bulletin 5C2.
Step 5: Effect of Circulation Pressure CRTi
hoist capacity must be reduced by the pressure end load
Fdie = efficiency x Fcasing during circulation. The hoist reduction (FEndPressure) depends on
circulation pressure (P), casing nominal ID (IDcasing) and CRTi
For example, from API 5C2 the pipe body yield for 9.63 in. x through hole (IDmandrel).
40.0 ppf L80 (244.5 mm x 59.53 kg/m L80) casing is 916,000
lbs (415.5 tonne). The slip efficiency for slip die 82157 used to FEndPressure = 0.79 × P × (ID2casing - ID2 mandrel)
run this casing is 75%. Therefore, the die hoist limit is:
For example, for circulation pressure of 1,000 psi (6.89 MPa)
75% × 916,000 lbs = 687,000 lbs = 343.5 ton and casing nominal ID of 8.84 in. (224.5 mm) the hoist reduc-
tion is:
or
0.79 × 1,000 psi × ((8.84 in.)2 - (1.5 in.)2) = 59,958 lbs ~ 30.0 ton
75% × 415.5 tonne = 311.6 tonne
or
In case the base tool hoist rating is smaller than the calculated
die hoist limit, the base tool hoist rating will be limiting. 0.79 × 6.89 MPa × ((224.5 mm)2 - (38.1 mm)2) = 266,432 N ~
27.2 tonne.

Therefore, the maximum hoist for the standard CRTi3-7.0 tool

reduces to 320.0 - 30.0 = 290.0 ton (262.8 tonne) or the maxi-
mum hoist for die 82157 (in step 3) must reduce to 343.5 - 30.0
= 313.5 ton (284.4 tonne).

1. Characteristics are based on standard tool components and are independent of specific limitations of cage and accessories.
2. Maximum allowable set-down load applied to the tool. Some set-down load may be reacted through the coupling. This rating does not take into account bearing load
limitations of the coupling.
3. CRTi tool circulation pressure capacity is generally governed by packer cup pressure capacity. Pressure capacity may be less than indicated if alternative seal arrange-
ments are used.
4. CRTi3-7.0 and CRTi3-7.0HC350 base tool length does not include casing seal assembly. To find overall tool length see Casing Seal Assembly and Overall Tool Length
table.
5. CRTi3-7.0HF240 base tool length does not change with casing seal assembly, base tool length is the same as overall tool length. Fixed Casing Seal is not available with
this tool model.
6. Tool weight is approximate and represents 7.0 in. base tool configuration. Contact Volant sales for further information on tool weight at +1 780.784.7099
7. Maximum flow rate is based on minimizing erosion rates when using typical fluids. Erosion rates may vary depending upon the fluid contents. Please inspect tool bore
regularly.
8. When rotating a casing/liner string during running/drilling operations, maximum rotational speeds are governed by top drive or casing connection specific limits.
9. Turns to Stoke Out is the rotational limit during tool makeup (this may be exceeded in combined load scenarios). The old style cams require 1.48 turns to stroke out and
Low-Release Cams only require 0.72 turns to stroke out.
10. Common die sizes shown. All API casing sizes and weights with drift diameter above 5.87 in. (149.1 mm) are available.
11. Maximum pipe weight is defined by the API Specification 5CT drift diameter of the heaviest weight casing into which the CRTi tool assembled with the specified die set
will fit.
12. Indicated minimum pipe weight is based on the assumption that control of average pipe inside diameter over die grip interval does not allow pipe body area reduction
less than 3.5% from nominal and additionally takes into account tool wear allowances, die penetration, casing deformation and diametrical stroke.
13. Cage (P/N: 105853) must be run in conjunction with Keeper (P/N: 83001) and Integral Slips (P/N: 105854) to enable running 7.0 in. 38.0 - 42.7ppf casing, with a reduced
torque capacity of 35,000 ft.lbs. All other CRTi3-7.0 Integral Slips and Dies can be run with Cage (P/N: 105853) with a reduced torque capacity of 35,000 ft.lbs.
14. Hoist limited to 320 tons (290 tonne).

The tool is available with upgraded parts to improve applications; high-capacity mandrel (CRTi2-
8.63HC750) uses stronger material for higher rated hoist capacity and low-release cams reduce
the turns to stroke out needed to set and release the tool. When working with mixed strings,
alternative two-piece jaw/die assembly is available for quick change over allowing for minimal
scheduled downtime. All configurations are mechanically activated in tension and both rotational
directions by top drive control using patented TAWG™ torque activated wedge grip.

Starting from the insertion diameter of the base tool (cage OD), selectable sizes of integral jaws/
dies are used to configure the CRTi to support gripping casing of increasing internal diameter.
Through the use of a patented extended reach die structure, the gripping diameter can be further
increased to include casing sizes much greater than the base tool.

in the die table below. Some dies can run a range of casing
weights. 0.02701 ft.lbs/psi/ppf × 40.0 ppf × 80,000 psi = 86,432 ft.lbs

Step 3: Die Hoist Capacity Tool hoist rating is based or

efficiency is the slip to pipe body load efficiency number (listed
in the following table for every die) and Fcasing is the casing hoist

during circulation. The hoist reduction (FEndPressure) depends on
Fdie = efficiency x Fcasing circulation pressure (P), casing nominal ID (IDcasing) and CRTi
through hole (IDmandrel).
For example, from API 5C2 the pipe body yield for 9.63 in. x

For example, for circulation pressure of 500 psi (3.45 MPa) and
run this casing is 80%. Therefore, the die hoist limit is:
casing nominal ID of 8.84 in. (224.5 mm) the hoist reduction is:
80% × 916,000 lbs = 732,800 lbs = 366.4 ton
0.79 × 500 psi × ((8.84 in.)2 - (2.0 in.)2) = 29,288 lbs ~ 14.6 ton
or
or
80% × 415.5 tonne = 332.4 tonne
0.79 × 3.44 MPa × ((224.5 mm)2 - (50.8 mm)2) = 129,955 N ~
In case the base tool hoist rating is smaller than the calculated 13.3 tonne.
die hoist limit, the base tool hoist rating will be limiting.
Therefore, the maximum hoist for the standard CRTi2-8.63 tool
reduces to 690.0 - 14.6 = 675.4 ton (612.7 tonne) or the maxi-
mum hoist for die 81756 (in step 3) must reduce to 366.4 - 14.6
= 351.8 ton (319.1 tonne).

1. Characteristics are based on standard tool components and are independent of specific limitations of cage and accessories.
2. Maximum allowable set-down load applied to the tool. Some set-down load may be reacted through the coupling. This rating does not take into account bearing load
limitations of the coupling. Minimum makeup torque requirements specified in running procedure 100027 must be followed to realize full set-down load capacity.
3. CRTi tool circulation pressure capacity is generally governed by packer cup pressure capacity. Pressure capacity may be less than indicated if alternative seal arrange-
ments are used.
4. CRTi2-8.63 base tool length does not include casing seal assembly. To find overall tool length see Casing Seal Assembly and Overall Tool Length table.
5. Tool weight is approximate and represents 8.63 in. base tool configuration. Contact Volant sales for further information on tool weight at +1 780.784.7099
6. Maximum flow rate is based on minimizing erosion rates when using typical fluids. Erosion rates may vary depending upon the fluid contents. Please inspect tool bore
regularly.
7. When rotating a casing/liner string during running/drilling operations, maximum rotational speeds are governed by top drive or casing connection specific limits.
8. Turns to Stoke Out is the rotational limit during tool makeup (this may be exceeded in combined load scenarios). The old style cams require 1.25 turns to
stroke out and low-release cams only require 0.60 turns to stroke out.
9. Common die sizes shown. All API casing sizes and weights with drift diameter above 7.38 in. (186.5 mm) are available.
10. Dies to be used with PN-105277 jaw only. Not compatible with standard jaw option.

1. Tool hoist rating is based on API Specification 8C; however, load capacity is further constrained by local interaction of the slip dies with the casing which must not exceed the efficiency indicated for individual slip die sizes to avoid excess deformation. The slip to casing interaction hoist limit is calculated by multiplying the slip to pipe body load efficiency number by the
casing hoist limit found in API Specification 5C2. For example: from 5C2 the pipe body yield for 9.625” x 40 ppf L80 casing is 916,000 lbs (415.5 tonne). The slip efficiency for die 81756 used to run this casing on the CRTi2-8.63 tool is 80%. Therefore the casing hoist limit is 80% x 916,000 lbs = 732,800 lbs (366.4 tons) or 80% x 415.5 tonne = 311.6 tonne.
2. Maximum pipe weight is defined by the API Specification 5CT drift diameter of the heaviest weight casing into which the CRTi® tool assembled with the specified die set will fit.
3. Indicated minimum pipe weight is based on the assumption that control of average pipe inside diameter over die grip interval does not allow pipe body area reduction less than 3.5% from nominal and additionally takes into account tool wear allowances, die penetration, casing deformation and tool stroke. Minimum Pipe Weight listed is for standard capacity man-
drels. High-capacity (HC) mandrels may have different minimum pipe weight, please consult the individual casing running tool base tool specification sheets for full range.
4. Slip to pipe body load efficiency and torque factor are only applicable to primary pipe size. The Slip to pipe body load efficiency and torque factor might be lower for overlap pipe sizes.
5. Torque Capacity may be limited by slip die/casing interaction. Where torque factors are provided, multiply this factor by the desired casing weight in ppf then multiply the result by the casing yield strength to determine the slip die/casing interaction torque limit. If no value is provided, tool rating will be limiting for all standard casing grades.
6. CRTi and CRTe® tool pressure end load capacity is independent of casing pressure capacity and casing seal assembly pressure capacity. During circulation hoist capacity must be reduced by the pressure end load.
7. CRTi1,2-4.5 Cage (P/N: 81325) when run in conjunction with Integral Slips (P/N: 80957) enable running 4.5” 13.5ppf casing, with a reduced torque capacity of 10,000 ft.lbs. All other CRTi1,2-4.5 Integral Slips can be run with Cage (P/N: 81325) with a reduced torque capacity of 10,000 ft.lbs.
CRTi1,2-5.5 Cage (P/N: 81128) must be run in conjunction with Keeper (P/N: 81134) and Integral Slips (P/N: 81129) to enable running 5.5” 23.0ppf casing, with a reduced torque capacity of 20,000 ft.lbs. CRTi1,2-5.5 Integral Slips 80913, 82165, 80981, 82013, 81284 and 83076 can also be run with Cage (P/N: 81128) with a reduced torque capacity of 20,000 ft.lbs.
CRTi3-7.0 Cage (P/N: 105853) must be run in conjunction with Keeper (P/N: 83001) and Integral Slips (P/N: 105854) to enable running 7.0 in. 38.0 - 42.7ppf casing, with a reduced torque capacity of 35,000 ft.lbs. All other CRTi3-7.0 Integral Slips and Dies can be run with Cage (P/N: 105853) with a reduced torque capacity of 35,000 ft.lbs.
CRTi4-7.0 Cage (P/N: 82999) must be run in conjunction with Keeper (P/N: 83001) and Integral Slips (P/N: 83000) to enable running 7.0” 38.0-42.7ppf casing, with a reduced torque capacity of 35,000 ft.lbs. All other CRTi4-7 Integral Slips and Dies can be run with Cage (P/N: 82999) with a reduced torque capacity of 35,000 ft.lbs.
8. Hoist capacity for CRTi1-7.0 is 300 ton (272 tonne).
9. Hoist limited for CRTi3-7.0 is 320 ton (290 tonne).
10. Non-standard radial stroke limit for this casing weight only.
11. Dies to be used with PN-105277 jaw and cannot be used without compatible jaw.
12. CRTe tool maximum pressure end load depends on the casing seal arrangement and stinger assembly. The retractable stinger assembly (R) has smaller pressure end load capacity than the fixed or non-retractable stinger assembly (NR). CRTe tool hoist capacity must be reduced by the pressure end load during circulation.

CRTi® Internal Grip Casing Running Tool
Volant’s CRTi® casing running tool is fully mechanical and designed for casing running
or drilling with top drive equipped rigs to makeup, breakout, reciprocate, rotate, fill,
circulate and cement casing and liner strings, reducing non-productive time and
associated costs. The tool is available with upgraded parts to suit diverse applications;
High-flow CwD Mandrel (CRTi4-7.0HF311) has a larger through hole for higher fluid
flow and Low-Release Cams reduce the turns to stroke out needed to set and release
the tool. All configurations are mechanically activated in tension and both rotational
directions by top drive control using TAWG™ wedge grip technology.

This patented architecture puts control in the hands of the driller, reducing the need for
third party support to run casing. Intuitive operations for pipe engagement and release
closely emulate the familiar make and break steps used to run drill pipe – stab, rotate
to the right to engage and reverse to disengage. Similarly, rig in and rig out steps are
simple, intuitive and efficient.

Starting from the insertion diameter of the base tool (cage OD), selectable sizes of integral
jaws/dies are used to configure the CRTi to support gripping casing of increasing internal
diameter. Through the use of a patented extended reach die structure, the gripping
diameter can be further increased to include casing sizes much greater than the base tool.

1. Characteristics are based on standard tool components and are independent of specific limitations of cage and accessories.
2. Maximum allowable set-down load applied to the tool. Some set-down load may be reacted through the coupling. This rating does not take into account
bearing load limitations of the coupling.
3. CRTi tool circulation pressure capacity is generally governed by packer cup pressure capacity. Pressure capacity may be less than indicated if alternative
seal arrangements are used.
4. CRTi4-7.0 base tool length does not include casing seal assembly. To find overall tool length see Casing Seal Assembly and Overall Tool Length table.
5. CRTi4-7.0HF311 base tool length does not change with casing seal assembly, base tool length is the same as overall tool length. Fixed Casing Seal is not
available with this tool model.
6. Tool weight is approximate and represents 7.0” base tool configuration. Contact Volant sales for further information on tool weight at +1 780.784.7099
7. Maximum flow rate is based on minimizing erosion rates when using typical fluids. Erosion rates may vary depending upon the fluid contents. Please
inspect tool bore regularly.
8. Turns to Stoke Out is the rotational limit during tool makeup (this may be exceeded in combined load scenarios). The old style cams require 1.10
turns to stroke out and Low-Release Cams only require 0.72 turns to stroke out.
9. Common die sizes shown. All API casing sizes and weights with drift diameter above 5.87 in (149.1 mm) are available.
10. Maximum pipe weight is defined by the API Specification 5CT drift diameter of the heaviest weight casing into which the CRTi tool assembled with
the specified die set will fit.
11. Indicated minimum pipe weight is based on the assumption that control of average pipe inside diameter over die grip interval does not allow pipe body
area reduction less than 3.5% from nominal and additionally takes into account tool wear allowances, die penetration, casing deformation and diametrical
stroke.
12. Cage (P/N: 82999) must be run in conjunction with Keeper (P/N: 83001) and Integral Slips (P/N: 83000) to enable running 7.0” 38.0 - 42.7ppf casing, with
a reduced torque capacity of 35,000 ft.lbs. All other CRTi4-7.0 Integral Slips and Dies can be run with Cage (P/N: 82999) with a reduced torque capacity
of 35,000 ft.lbs.
13. Non-standard radial stroke limit for this casing weight only.

1. Tool hoist rating is based on API Specification 8C; however, load capacity is further constrained by local interaction of the slip dies with the casing which must not
exceed the efficiency indicated for individual slip die sizes to avoid excess deformation. The slip to casing interaction hoist limit is calculated by multiplying the slip to
pipe body load efficiency number by the casing axial yield load. The casing axial yield load is obtained from formulae provided in API Technical Report 5C3, assuming
a uni-axial load. For example, from 5C3 the pipe body yield for 5.5 in x 20.0 ppf L80 (139.7 mm x 29.76 kg/m L80) casing is calculated to be 466,000 lbs (211.3 tonne).
The slip efficiency for die 81813 used to run this casing is 80%. Therefore, the casing hoist limit is 80% x 466,000 lbs = 372,800 lbs (186.4 tons) or 80% x 211.3
tonne = 169.0 tonne.
2. Torque capacity may be limited by slip die/casing interaction. Multiply torque factor by the desired casing weight in ppf (kg/m) then multiply the result by the casing
yield strength to determine the slip die/casing interaction torque limit. For example, for die 81813 to run 5.5 in x 20.0 ppf L80 (139.7 mm x 29.76 kg/m L80) casing, the
die torque limit is: 0.02812 ft.lbs/psi/ppf x 80,000 psi x 20.0 ppf = 44,992 ft.lbs or 3.716 N.m/MPa/(kg/m) x 551.6 MPa x 29.76 kg/m = 61,000 N.m.
3. Maximum allowable set-down load applied to the tool. Some set-down load may be reacted through the coupling. This rating does not take into account
bearing load limitations of the coupling.
4. CRTe circulation pressure capacity can be limited by packer cup pressure capacity and pressure end load. Circulation pressure capacity may be less than
indicated if alternative seal arrangements are used or if it surpasses the maximum allowable pressure end loads.
5. CRTe pressure end load depends on the type of casing seal arrangement. It is calculated by taking internal cross-sectional area of the casing bore and
subtracting 2.0 in2 (representing the swept area of bore seal) and multiplying the result by the circulating pressure. The result must not exceed the stated
maximum pressure end loads.
6. Maximum flow rate is based on managing erosion rates when using typical fluids. Erosion rates may vary based on fluid contents. Inspect tool bore regularly.
7. Overall tool length and weight will vary depending on configuration used and casing seal arrangement.
8. Values given are valid for all pipe weights specified in API 5CT.

This tool is equipped with low-release cams to reduce the turns to stroke out needed to set and
release the tool. This tool is mechanically activated in tension and both rotational directions by top
drive control using patented TAWG™ torque activated wedge grip.

Tool Selection Guide
Step 1: Base Tool Selection The CRTi is available in Step 4: Die Torque Capacity
a variety of dimensions and ratings. The Base Tool Character- Tdie = Ktorque x Wcasing x σYcasing

tool. The required hoist, torque, set-down load capacity and Where Tdie is the torque limit due to slip die/casing interaction,

Some dies can run a range of casing weights.
0.03414 ft.lbs/psi/ppf × 84.0 ppf × 55,000 psi = 157,727 ft.lbs
Step 3: Die Hoist Capacity Tool hoist rating is based
on API Specifications 8C; however casing load limit is further or
constrained by local interaction of slip dies with casing, which
4.5112 N.m/MPa/(kg/m) × 125.0 kg/m × 379.2 MPa = 213,831

sizes to avoid excess deformation. The slip to casing interaction
hoist limit (Fdie) can be found by the following formula where Where the base tool torque capacity is lower than the die
efficiency is the slip to pipe body load (listed in the following torque capacity, the tool is limited to base tool torque capacity.
table for every die) and Fcasing is the casing hoist limit found in
API Bulletin 5C2.
Step 5: Effect of Circulation Pressure CRTi
Fdie = efficiency x Fcasing hoist capacity must be reduced by the pressure end load
during circulation. The hoist reduction (FEndPressure) depends on
For example, from API 5C2 the pipe body yield for 16.0 in. x circulation pressure (P), casing nominal ID (IDcasing) and CRTi

lbs (601.4 tonne). The slip efficiency for slip die 104422 used to
run this casing is 80%. Therefore, the die hoist limit is: FEndPressure = 0.79 × P × (ID2casing - ID2mandrel)

80% × 1,326,000 lbs = 1,060,800 lbs = 530.4 ton For example, for circulation pressure of 500 psi (3.4 MPa) and
casing nominal ID of 15.01 in. (381.3 mm) the hoist reduction
or is:

80% × 601.4 tonne = 481.1 tonne 0.79 × 500 psi × ((15.01 in.)2 - (2.25 in.)2) = 86,994 lbs ~ 43.5
ton
In case the base tool hoist rating is smaller than the calculated
die hoist limit, the base tool hoist rating will be limiting. or

0.79 × 3.4 MPa × ((381.3 mm)2 - (57.15 mm)2) = 387,358 N ~

39.5 tonne

Therefore, the maximum hoist for the CRTi1-10.75 tool reduces

to 1,250.0 - 43.58 = 1,206.5 ton (1,094.6 tonne) or the max-
imum hoist for die 104422 (in step 3) must reduce to 530.4
- 43.5 = 486.9 ton (441.7 tonne).

3. CRTi circulation pressure capacity is generally governed by packer cup pressure capacity. Pressure capacity may be less than indicated if alternative seal arrangements are used.
4. Base tool length does not include casing seal assembly. To find overall tool length see Casing Seal Assembly and Overall Tool Length table.
5. Tool weight is approximate and represents 10.75 in. base tool configuration. Contact Volant sales for further information on tool weight at +1 780.784.7099
6. CRTi1-10.75 tool can run up to 38 in. casing size. Contact Volant sales for availability at +1 780.784.7099.
7. Maximum flow rate is based on minimizing erosion rates when using typical fluids. Erosion rates may vary depending upon the fluid contents. Please inspect tool bore regularly.
8. When rotating a casing/liner string during running/drilling operations, maximum rotational speeds are governed by top drive or casing connection specific limits.
9. Common die sizes shown. All API casing sizes and weights with drift diameter above 9.13 in. (231.8 mm) are available.
10. Maximum pipe weight is defined by the API Specification 5CT drift diameter of the heaviest weight casing into which the CRTi assembled with the speci-
fied die set will fit.
11. Indicated minimum pipe weight is based on the assumption that control of average pipe inside diameter over die grip interval does not allow
pipe body area reduction less than 3.5% from nominal and additionally takes into account tool wear allowances, die penetration, casing defor-
mation and diametrical stroke.

CRTi® Internal Grip Casing Running Tool
Volant’s ActiveSET™ CRTi® casing running tool is fully mechanical and designed for casing running or
drilling with top drive equipped rigs to makeup, breakout, reciprocate, rotate, fill, circulate and cement
casing and liner strings, reducing non-productive time and associated costs. A simple rig-up and rig-down
further increases operational efficiency. The ActiveSET enhances the standard CRTi by streamlining tool
activation to a single-step process by eliminating the need to manage set-down load while simultaneously
rotating to the right. The tool engages by stabbing into the casing joint, allowing casing makeup to
immediately begin.

The CRTi3-7.0 is available with various retrofit upgrades to improve function and performance, as well as
enable a broader range of applications. The high-capacity mandrel upgrade (CRTi3-7.0HC350) uses higher
strength material to achieve an increased rated hoist capacity; the high-flow mandrel (CRTi3-7.0HF240) has
a larger through hole and a modified casing seal assembly arrangement to support higher fluid flow rate
requirements for Casing while Drilling (CwD) operations. All CRTi3-7.0 tools now come standard with
upgraded low-release cams that reduce the turns required to set and release the tool. All configurations
are mechanically activated in tension and both rotational directions by top drive control using patented
TAWG™ torque activated wedge grip.

Starting from the insertion diameter of the base tool (cage OD), selectable sizes of integral jaws/dies are
used to configure the CRTi to support gripping casing of increasing internal diameter. Through the use
of a patented extended reach die structure, the gripping diameter can be further increased to include
casing sizes much greater than the base tool.

75% × 916,000 lbs = 687,000 lbs = 343.5 ton and casing nominal ID of 8.84 in (224.5 mm) the hoist reduc-
tion is:
or
0.79 × 1,000 psi × ((8.84 in.)2 - (1.5 in.)2) = 59,958 lbs ~ 30.0 ton

CRTi® Internal Grip Casing Running Tool
Volant’s ActiveSET™ CRTi® casing running tool is fully mechanical and designed for casing running
or drilling with top drive equipped rigs to makeup, breakout, reciprocate, rotate, fill, circulate and
cement casing and liner strings, reducing non-productive time and associated costs. A simple rig-up
and rig-down further increases operational efficiency. The ActiveSET enhances the standard CRTi
by streamlining tool activation to a single-step process by eliminating the need to manage set-down
load while simultaneously rotating to the right. The tool engages by stabbing into the casing joint,
allowing casing makeup to immediately begin.

The tool is available with upgraded parts to improve applications; high-capacity mandrel
(CRTi2-5.5HC225) uses stronger material for higher rated hoist capacity and low-release
cams reduce the turns to stroke out needed to set and release the tool. All configurations are
mechanically activated in tension and both rotational directions by top drive control using
TAWG™ wedge grip technology.

Step 2: Cage Selection The torque capacity of the dard casing grades. For example, for die 81129 to run 5.5 in.
CRTi may be limited by torque capacity of the cage. Some x 20.0 ppf L80 (139.7 mm x 29.76 kg/m L80) casing, the die
cages are designed to run casing with smaller drift. The cage torque limit is:

casing is smaller than the cage OD. 0.02222 ft.lbs/psi/ppf × 20.0 ppf × 80,000 psi = 35,552 ft.lbs

Step 3: Die Selection Refer to the die table below or

able for this tool. Find the appropriate die for casing size and
weight. Some dies can run a range of casing weights. Where the base tool torque capacity is lower than the die
torque capacity, the tool is limited to base tool torque capacity.
Step 4: Die Hoist Capacity Tool hoist rating is based
on API Specifications 8C; however casing load limit is further Step 6: Effect of Circulation Pressure CRTi
constrained by local interaction of slip dies with casing, which hoist capacity must be reduced by the pressure end load
must not exceed the efficiency indicated for individual slip die during circulation. The hoist reduction (FEndPressure) depends on
sizes to avoid excess deformation. The slip to casing interaction circulation pressure (P), casing nominal ID (IDcasing) and CRTi
hoist limit (Fdie) can be found by the following formula where through hole (IDmandrel).
efficiency is the slip to pipe body load (listed in the following
table for every die) and Fcasing is the casing hoist limit found in FEndPressure = 0.79 × P × (ID2casing - ID2mandrel)
API Bulletin 5C2.
For example, for circulation pressure of 1,000 psi (6.9 MPa) and
Fdie = efficiency x Fcasing casing nominal ID of 4.78 in. (121.4 mm) the hoist reduction is:

For example, from API 5C2 the pipe body yield for 5.5 in. x 20.0 0.79 × 1,000 psi × ((4.78 in.)2 - (1.25 in.)2) = 16,816 lbs ~ 8.4 ton
ppf L80 (139.7 mm x 29.76 kg/m L80) casing is 466,000 lbs
(211.3 tonne). The slip efficiency for slip die 81129 used to run or
this casing is 80%. Therefore, the die hoist limit is:
0.79 × 6.9 MPa × ((121.4 mm)2 - (31.8 mm)2) = 74,824 N ~ 7.6
80% × 466,000 lbs = 372,800 lbs = 186.4 ton tonne

or Therefore, the maximum hoist for the standard CRTi2-5.5 tool

reduces to 200.0 - 8.4 = 191.6 ton (173.8 tonne) or the maxi-
80% × 211.3 tonne = 169.0 tonne mum hoist for die 81129 (in step 4) must reduce to 186.4 - 8.4
= 178.0 ton (161.4 tonne).
In case the base tool hoist rating is smaller than the calculated
die hoist limit, the base tool hoist rating will be limiting. Please contact Volant for further information.

CHROME
HANDLING
When necessary to run corrosion resistant alloys
in extreme environments, preventative measures
are required when handling these tubulars.
Contamination by materials more susceptible to
corrosion than the base pipe, or surface
imperfections, can lead to undesired
corrosion and pitting in those areas,
putting the integrity of your pipe and
well at risk.

The low-marking package for the Volant

CRTi® and CRTe® casing running tools
virtually eliminates die marking on
corrosion resistant tubulars to ensure long
term integrity of completions in these extreme
environments. The key is a contamination free,
evenly distributed grip that leaves predictable
markings at a fraction of API 5CRA and industry
standards. In combination with the low-marking
dies, Volant’s casing running tools can be hoisted,
rotated and circulated using the top drive, ideal
for any application.

Proven Performance
Operated by the driller, our casing running tools
enable a step change in safety during casing and
liner installation by removing people from the
red-zone and eliminating dangerous equipment
from the rig floor. From rig up to rig down and
every step along the way, Volant streamlines
operations and brings enhanced efficiency to the
well construction process, reducing non-produc-
tive time and elevating your bottom line.
FEATURES
Zero Slippage
Volant’s casing running tools with patented TAWG™ torque
activated wedge grip increase the radial gripping load with
applied hoist load and torque in both directions to ensure a
reliable, slip-free grip.

Contamination Free
The Volant chrome handling package is made with
materials that are corrosion resistant and removes the
threat of contamination from adjacent components that
could come into contact with CRA tubulars during normal
operation. Volant’s system is compatible with materials up
to a chrome content of 25% (API 5CRA groups 1 and 2).

Low Marking
Carefully designed for minimal marking while achieving the
same performance expected from Volant casing running
tools, our dies distribute load evenly across the entire die/
casing interaction face. This ensures that there are no
loading hot spots and allows consistent die marks that can
be predicted and controlled in different loading scenarios.

Maintained Connection Integrity

There is typically a greater sensitivity and lower tolerance
for challenges such as galling and cross threading when
making up CRA tubulars. Volant offers a suite of float,
compensation and alignment tools that help ensure
connection integrity is not jeopardized during top drive
make up with a casing running tool. Combining a Volant
