on Living Things and
Environment
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Science – Grade 10 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on

Effects of Electromagnetic Radiation on Living Things and Environment!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators

both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration
their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

Lesson Effects of Electromagnetic

1 Radiation to Living Things
and Environment.
In the previous lesson, you have learned practical applications of the different
regions of Electromagnetic waves. These applications certainly made life easier and
comfortable in its every aspect.

But, unfortunately, some things done excessively and improperly may cause harm
and hazard to you and to your environment. That is why, we have to take
precautionary measure in dealing with things related to electromagnetic waves.

Here, we will discuss the effects of electromagnetic radiation to humans, plants,

animals, and in environment.

6
What’s In

Write the appropriate electromagnetic waves related to the given pictures below.

What is It

After doing the “Cause and Effect” activity, you now have an idea of the possible
effects of electromagnetic radiation.

The following are the effects of too much exposure on electromagnetic radiation to
living things and environment:

1. To human

The human body has the
ability to absorb radiations
that might be harmful and
can cause even different
diseases like cancers, mental
disorders, neurologic
illnesses, fetal abnormalities,
cardiovascular diseases, etc.

cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/11693393/cellphones_LEAD.jpg

The long terms exposure of low-
frequency EMR from home
appliances can cause health
problem such as hyperactivity,
sleep disorder, emotional
instability.

https://www.drlam.com/images/brain-fog-electromagnetic-
hypersensitivity-23551-4.jpg

21
2. To animals

Honeybee’s loss or known as colony collapse disorder (CCD) was observed in
honeybee colonies near to cell phone towers. Bees cannot detect the right way
to find the hive due to consistent EMR pollution (S. Batool, 2020)

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fresearchmatters.in%2Fsciqs%2Fhoney-where-
are-bees-story-colony-collapse-

When migratory birds come in direct contact with EMR from TV, cell
phone and FM towers, they become entirely confused and disoriented
from their right path and undetermined navigational abilities. The sense
of direction of a large number of migratory birds like sparrows, pigeons
are destroyed due to the interference from mobile phone masts. Many
species of birds die each year from the overlapping with TV, cell phone
and FM towers all over the world during migration (S. Batool, 2020).

Grazing of cows near to the TV, cell phone and FM towers may acquire
general health problems like defective embryos, birth deformities, and
behavioral problems. Also, exposure of EMR to dairy cows can cause the
changing composition of milk, leading to a decrease in the production of
milk and fertility problems (S. Batool, 2020).

EMR can also cause reproductive and developmental problems of
domestic animals like dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. (S. Batool, 2020).

22
3. To plants

EMR from microwaves affects the nutrient capability of vegetables making
them unhealthy for human use, such as it destroys the anti-cancer ability
of different vegetables. (S. Batool, 2020)

https://cdn.hswstatic.com/gif/microwave-kill-nutrients-1200x800.jpg

It also causes increasing of crown transparency, turning the color of
leaves to brown, yellow, and red, tree leaves fall prematurely, dead
branches, and irregular growth.

The table below shows the specific effects of different regions of Electromagnetic
Spectrum

Types of EM Waves Effects

Gamma Rays • can kill healthy cells
• can cause genes to mutate
X-rays • may damage central nervous system
• damage cells
Ultraviolet • risk of getting skin cancer
• blindness
• can cause premature aging of the skin
• sunburn
Visible Light • skin cancer
Infrared • sunburn
Microwaves • internal heating of body tissue
Radio waves • migraine/ headache
• harm body cells
