Tips for saving fuel in Tractors

1. You should read the tractor manual carefully to know about the
maintenance and operation of your tractor so that you can maintain the
tractor well. According to the research, a badly maintained tractor
wastes up 25% of precious diesel.

When in doubt, check with an authorized garage or your dealer.

2. Always drive the tractor in correct gear. If your tractor struggles to pull a
load with the throttle at maximum then shift to a lower gear. Once it
accelerates, shift to a higher gear. Wrong gear selection can increase
fuel consumption by 30% and reduce field output by 50%.

Always run your tractor in the correct gear.

3. Prevent tractor wheels from slipping by adding water in tyres of tractors

and/or adding right amount of cast iron weights. Add just the right
amount of weight to keep the slippage to the minimum.

Remove water/weight after field operation is over.

4. Stop diesel leaks. You must check your tractor daily for any diesel
leakage. A leak of 1 drop per second can cost you upto 2000 litres of
diesel in an year.

5. You must turn your engine off when you stop. An idling engine wastes
about 1 litre diesel per hour.

Maintain battery, dynamo and starter in good condition. If they are

faulty they can force you to idle.

6. You must replace the worn out tyres or re-tread your tyres timely. Worn
out tyres reduce the pulling power. Maintain correct air pressure in the
tyres.
Note that different tyre pressure is recommended for field work and
road work. Please refer tractor manual for same.

7. Dirt is your engine’s worst enemy. Good air filtration is very important
as tractor operates in dusty environment. Unfiltered air wears out
cylinder bore 45 times faster and piston rings 115 times faster than
normal. Use quality air filters and replace them as recommended.

Ensure to clean air filters regularly.

8. Plan your field run. You must plough according to planned layout so as
to minimize awkward turns, backtracking and re-ploughing.

9. Ensure your tractor does not spew smoke excessively. If the tractor
emits excessive smoke, it means it is wasting the precious fuel.
Oversized implements or wrong gear selection can cause the tractor to
emit smoke. Or your engine may be requiring repairs. Get it
serviced/repaired at a reputed garage.

Faulty fuel injector can increase fuel consumption by 25%.

10.Match hauling capacity with load. You should not use under/oversized
implements.

You may consume upto 30% more diesel if you use undersized
implements or drive at low speed.
