August Bird Quiz - Answers

1. If you touch a bird’s nest the bird will smell your scent and abandon the nest. TRUE or
FALSE?
Answer: FALSE most birds have a poor sense of smell so it is not scent that may cause
a bird to abandon its nest. Just being by or disturbing a nest, depending on what
stage the building, egg laying or incubation is happening, may cause a bird to
abandon a nest. Predators, particularly mammals, will pick up human scent which
can lead the predator to a nest causing it to be destroyed or abandoned.
2. List some species of birds, that nest in Ohio, whose common names have a man-made
structure or building as part of their name. Ex. House Sparrow.
Answer: We gave you one but did you get these others? Chimney Swift, Barn Owl,
Barn Swallow, House Wren, House Finch … any others?

3. Great Crested Flycatchers often incorporate one of these items as part of their nest.
a) Shed snake skin b) Part of a paper wasp nest
c) Butterfly wings d) Donkey hair
Answer: Yes, shed snake skin is often found in this species nest. If snake sheds cannot be
found the birds will use plastic or cellophane wrappers and even dried onion skins.

4. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers are two species that use
what natural material to help camouflage their nests?
Answer: Lichens!
