Proposed Innovation

Through the conduct of the study, the researcher proposed to use the Line Multiplication

Method to teach multiplication skills. Although this approach is not new in teaching

multiplication and had been used in other Asian countries like Japan and China, the researcher

taught that this would give learners who have hard time in doing multiplication alternative way

to solve a problem. To better explain how Line Multiplication Method is done below is a step by

step procedure.

Step 1

Determine the place values of your first number. You need to know how many places are

in your number, and what digit is in each place. (In this case we are only going to multiply one

digit number by 1 digit number so the place value is always ones.)

Step 2

Draw vertical lines. For example, if you are representing 4, you would draw 3 parallel

lines.

Step 3

Draw horizontal lines to represent the second number.

Draw the lines near the top of the diagram. They should cross all the lines of the first

number.

It might be helpful to draw each number’s lines in a different color.

For example, if you are representing the number 3, you would draw 3 parallel lines

crossing over the sets of lines from the first number.

Step 4

Draw dots on each point where the lines intersect. In the line multiplication method, you

will be counting all the dots instead of doing any actual multiplying. The total number of dots

will be then the final answer.

Step 5

To discuss it further to learners, emphasize to them how the dots are aligned and tell them

the alignment of dots represents the number they multiply.
