Chapter II

Methods and Procedures

Research Design

A quantitative approach was followed. Burns and Grove (1993:777)


define quantitative research as a formal, objective, systematic
process to describe and test relationships and examine cause and
effect interactions among variables. Surveys may be used for
descriptive, explanatory and exploratory research. A descriptive
survey design was used. A survey is used to collect original
data for describing a population too large to observe directly
(Mouton 1996:232). A survey obtains information from a sample of
people by means of self-report, that is, the people respond to a
series of questions posed by the investigator (Polit & Hungler
1993:148).

Locale of the Study

According to Burns and Grove (1993:779), a population is defined


as all elements (individuals, objects and events) that meet the
sample criteria for inclusion in a study.

The Researcher will conduct the research at College for Research


and Technology, Cabanatuan City which will focus on the
different year levels in Senior High School and College.
Respondents

The Respondents of this Research are the Senior High School and
selected College Students of College for Research and
Technology.

Sample and Sampling Procedure

The researcher will randomly distribute the 300 questionnaires


to the students, 20 questionnaires in each year level.

Research Instruments

A questionnaire was chosen as data collection instrument. A


questionnaire is a printed self-report form designed to elicit
information that can be obtained through the written responses
of the subjects. The information obtained through a
questionnaire is similar to that obtained by an interview, but
the questions tend to have less depth (Burns & Grove 1993:368).

Data will be collected with the aid of questionnaires. It is


designed to determine English Language Learners and Math
Achievement: A Study of Opportunity to Learn and Language
Accommodation to the students of College for Research and
Technology and it will be based on a four point Likert-scale,
with 1 meaning “Strongly Agree”, 2 meaning “Agree”, 3 meaning
“Strongly Disagree” and 4 meaning “Disagree”
The questionnaires contain 15 questions. The questions 1-5
consist of student’s profile. The questions 6-15 consist of the
English Language Learners and Math Achievement: A Study of
Opportunity to Learn and Language Accommodation to the students
of College for Research and Technology using the four point
Likert-scale, with 1 meaning, “I agree;” 2 meaning, “I agree
somewhat;” 3 meaning, “I disagree somewhat;” and 4 meaning, “I
disagree.”
DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE
The researcher will ask a permission to the President of College
for Research and Technology, Cabatuan City for the distribution
of Questionnaires by explaining the reason of conducting a
research to the school.
