What, Where, How and When?
Sulaiman and Kirtahar Hills (Present day – Afghanistan and Pakistan Border) - Men and
women started growing crops about 8000 years ago. They also reared animals like sheep,
goat and cattle. They lived in villages.
Garo Hills (Present day- North East India) and Vindhyas (Present day – MP) are some areas
where agriculture developed.
Rice Cultivation started north of the Vindhyas.
Early cities were developed along the banks of the River Indus about 4700 years ago.
Later cities were developed along the banks of the River Ganga about 2500 years ago.
Areas around the River Son to the south of the River Ganga (Present day- Bihar) were part
of the powerful Magadha Kingdom.
The word India comes from the River Indus. When Greeks and Iranians came to our
country 2500 years ago, they were familiar to the River Indus and called the place east of
the river as India.
The word Bharat (referred people who lived in the North West) comes from the Rig Veda
which is an ancient Sanskrit text dated around 3500 years ago.
Manuscripts (Greek: Manu- Hands) are the texts which are written on the bark of
Himalayan trees in Sanskrit, Prakrit and Tamil. They gave detailed account of the lives of
the people and the kings, beliefs about religion and practices, science and medicine.
Inscriptions are writings written on relatively hard surfaces like rocks. Usually they
contained orders by the kingdom for their people or the success story of the war fought by
the king.
BC- Before Christ, AD- Anno Domino (In the year of the Lord).
CE- Common Era, BCE- Before Common Era.
Languages and Scripts used in the inscriptions are studied and the scholars find the
meaning out of it. This process is known as Decipherment.

The beginning of farming and herding at Mehrgarh dates to c. 6000 BC/ BCE.

The compilation of the Jain texts at the council at Valabhi, c.512/521 CE .
The rule of Harshavardhana, 606-647 CE.
Xuan Zang comes to India, 630-643 CE.
The rule of Pulakeshin II, 609-642 CE.
