EXPERIENCE GUIDE

Quarter 1 - Math 10
Lesson 2: Factoring Trinomials

GET STARTED!

In the previous lesson, you focused on volleyball. You learned about representing the
dimensions of a volleyball court. In this lesson, you will focus on basketball.

You also learned how to factor special products such as the difference between two
squares and perfect square trinomials. There are techniques you were able to apply in
factoring these special products. What if the given trinomial is not a perfect square
trinomial and its terms don’t have a common monomial factor? How do you think it can
be factored?

CRITICAL THINKING QUESTION: How do I determine the dimensions of a rectangle

whose area is expressed in a polynomial?

Let’s do the activity with your LF below to get started!

BASKETBALL LOVERS

Basketball is the most popular sport in the Philippines. Around 40% of the
Philippine population plays basketball and around 81% are basketball fans.
Do you know why Filipinos love basketball?

Watch this video to know why a lot of Filipinos love to play basketball and watch
basketball games and then answer the questions below.

1. How did basketball become known in the Philippines?

2. What are the proofs that basketball is loved by the Filipinos?
3. Why do Filipinos love basketball?
4. What were the impacts of basketball on the Filipinos?

Similar to volleyball, basketball players have different positions as well. Each player
should know their position so that they can do their task properly. Now, it’s time to know
more about the basketball court. It is important to know how much space the players
have because it helps in planning and strategizing.

Your first task is to determine the floor area of a basketball court given its
dimensions expressed in a polynomial. Write your answers in your notebook.

1. Dimensions = (x + 2) by (x + 8) meters
2. Dimensions = (x - 3) by (x - 7) meters
3. Dimensions = (x + 6) by (x - 1) meters
4. Dimensions = (x - 9) by (x + 1) meters

If you find the task challenging, watch the video below:

Multiply Binomials

Your second task is to determine the dimensions of a basketball court given its
floor area expressed in a polynomial. Write your answers in your notebook.
Share your answers in the forum.

1. Floor Area = (x2 + 4x + 3) meters2

2. Floor Area = (x2 - 5x + 4) meters2
3. Floor Area = (x2 + x - 6) meters2
4. Floor Area = (x2 - 3x - 10) meters2

If you find the task challenging, watch the video below:

1. Describe the factors in relation to the trinomial given.
a. What is the relationship between the constants in the factors and the
middle term of the given trinomial?
b. What is the relationship between the constants in the factors and the last
term of the given trinomial?
2. How are multiplying binomials related to factoring trinomials?
3. How do you find the factors of a trinomial? Come up with an organized
procedure.

CHECKPOINT 1

Check your knowledge by answering the questions below. Access and answer the
questions in the LMS.

1. Explain how you determine if a polynomial can be factored using an example.

2. Factor the following trinomials.

a. a2 + 12a + 20
b. x2 + 10x + 24
c. m2 - 7m + 12
d. y2 + 5y - 36
e. p2 - 12p - 28
f. n2 - 14n - 32

1. Each basketball player on the court has their own role. Ownership is taking
responsibility and accountability. How will each player take direct responsibility
for what’s assigned to them?
2. At home, are there tasks or household chores you are expected to do? How will
you apply ownership in doing your tasks?
3. (Optional) Reflect on your experiences this week, and think about the Mindset,
Character, and Habits you displayed. You may use this checklist to help in your
reflection.

Good job! You’ve completed all the tasks for EG#2.
