Catalan, LPT MAED-MAPEH 1. Gwe the characteristics of Phils Asian Arts. When we trace back the history of Arts in general, we will learn that it has gone through a series of stages of development. This also applies to Philippine and Asian Arts. Although, arts in both of these regions do not match with the grandeur history that Western art has, it made its presence be felt through the emergence of puppetry, pottery, dramas, poetry, and other art forms that do not only serve its aesthetic value but also its function even in the advent of technology. Based on my observation, I can enumerate only a few notable characteristics that both Philippine and Asian Arts share. First is its. individualistic approach to their respective art forms and practices. We can all notice that only a few artworks or art pieces in Asia and the Philippines share the same quality. (1) Most artworks of countries in Asia are highly individualistic in style due to cultural differences. This prohibits other countries to share the same art technique with these _ countries that also hinders their active participation in the development of _ these artworks. For instance, Indonesia has Wayang Kulit — a distinct traditional form of puppet-shadow play while other countries in Asia like China, Malaysia, and Thailand also have their distinct version of this artform. Though this practice allows Asian countries to inject their sense of culture and identity into their performances, it also discourages collaboration among these countries to improve and develop the art form through sharing of styles and techniques. The second notable characteristic that I would like to highlight is (2) the connectedness of the artworks to Asian countries’ religion and beliefs. It is known to men that one factor that divides the human race is. religion and when Art is affixed and associated with such dividing factor, it also limits other countries’ involvement in the creation of these arts. Given that Asia is the largest continent in the world and is a home for a diversified religion and beliefs, Asian people may find it hard to accept mistakes and wrong interpretations of artwork especially if it is deeply rooted in religion and set of customs and practices. That is why we can notice that countries in Asia seem to get away from doing other Asian’ countries’ artform and opt to create a new distinct version of artworks for their country instead. This would not only give them freedom but also the opportunity to showcase their own culture. ‘The third and last characteristic that I think plays an important role in the Philippine and Asian arts is (3) the ancestral background and history of each Asian country. Some countries have been colonized by Westerners while others remain untouched. The said disparity in history and ancestry makes diversity and differentiated cultural practices more evident while interconnectedness among Asian cultures dwindles. This can be easily “Page| 1 seen in the Philippines where our practices are mostly influenced by western colonization. The said influence is further supported through the prevailing existence of western dances in our Philippine Folk Dances. These dances include the Jota, Habanera, and Fandango. Despite this immensely big partition among cultures in Asia, these differences allow us to better understand what culture is all about and how this can widely affect how a certain group of people behave and embody these cultures through their crafts and arts. It widens our perspective about cultural understanding and that we should not use one culture to judge those of others. “There may be a great division that separates us from the rest but this creates beauty that only an open mind and open heart can see.” Only with a better understanding of different cultures, we can live in. peace and harmony. 2. How Phil. + Asion Arts beneficial to- A. Student It is not only Philippine and Asian Arts that will be of great benefit for students but it is the art in general. We live in an era where we get to expose ourselves to different media brought by the advancement in technology. But with these exposures, are we also aware of the artistic value that lies behind everything that we use? As a student, we have to be critical with everything. It is through» being curious about something that we get to learn new things. However, this curiosity must be backed up with principles, theories, and fundamental knowledge to properly guide us in finding answers to our queries. Students should not only learn the concepts from the book but also the culture that makes up the community he is in. Without this culture, he will never be able to exemplify his talents, skills, and everything that he; has learned. That is why, the study of the Culture and the Arts finds its way to the current education curricula through Art Appreciation to not only. help students learn about culture, the arts, and its significance but to make them realize how important it is to know your identity first before learning life itself. i % Culture Culture is a reflection of the people itself. Without culture, they ~ will lose their identity. This is the reason why we have to further our encounters with culture for it allows us to better understand the community, the human race, and how these two entities work together to 3 form a society. a “Page |2 The Philippine and Asian Arts as a significant part of the culture is beneficial because it gives us an avenue to look into the art and its stages of development through a lens and to see a more detailed picture of it. It stimulates our minds to elicit questions that will lead us towards cultural awareness and know our identity even better. Cultural awareness and better cultural understanding will result in an inclusive community. 1. Society, Every society holds a certain amount of identity and this identity in different contexts like practices, beliefs, and traditions make up the culture of a particular society. Given that society holds culture at its core, the study of Philippine and Asian Arts as one of the few categories of arts provides society in general and us its members to explore what makes us more of a human being. For society to work effectively, there must exist a ifying factor that binds both a person’s identity and the differences he can offer to the world. This is what culture does, it binds our identity to the cultural world we continue to explore. Therefore art, that promotes culture is beneficial to society for it immerses us in different opportunities ” that give us a clearer understanding of the relationship of man to the world to which he belongs. 3. Als an educator how cau you encourage, inspire, provide a context for academic and personal encounter for global vision using the following streams: * A At, Art, in general, is elsewhere. Educator only needs to be aware of these different art forms to support students’ holistic encounters with art. Meaning, students’ understanding and interpretation of art will highly depend on how eager their teachers are in bringing art to the table. Without any direct experience of art, there will surely be a limited notion and idea about it. That is why, for teachers or educators to serve the best experiences to students such as that of art, they must also get a lot of exposure to it. These exposures should not only be superficial but more in-depth and detailed encounters. 4 Once teachers have enough tools already, he needs to figure out how to use these tools effectively. It is an advantage if educators are packed by experiences but they must be able to effectively channel these experiences to students so they too will have a better appreciation for art. We have to © take note that experiences are useless without them being used for future advancements and development. So, resources like this must be properly utilized by educators to serve students with plentiful of valuable art 9 encounters. Sy “Page |3 %. Dance There may be different programs for dance that students may encounter in school also depending on how competent the teacher is: If educators had a bountiful experience with dancing, there will be a high chance that he will use his expertise to share it with students. This is the reason why, teachers have to continuously engage themselves in seminar-workshops, training, and experience-rich activities that would not only make their resources richer but could heighten their love and passion for arts like dancing even better. Educators need also to provide students with opportunities in dancing where they could not only learn about the art form but most importantly, develop their passion and love for dancing. This is where it all starts. When students experience something beautiful and worthwhile, they tend to go back to these experiences and eagerly wait for more opportunities that can repeat these positive encounters. This is why, educators need not only to create experiences but specifically, memorable” and rightful experiences. , C Music Unlike other art forms, there is very little interest given to music. This not because it is less appealing but because of the level of complexity that surrounds it. Music is a difficult art form and not all are given equal opportunity to immerse themselves with it. There are few reasons why music is not that accessible to everyone and one of these reasons is the cost of musical instruments. Unlike dancing which uses the human body as its instrument to convey a message, music needs a real physical instrument. To learn music better means having with you a personal instrument to practice the skill every time. This is why students here in the Philippines have little to no experience in music because of musical instruments' unavailability to schools. The second reason is, due to lack of , | musical exposure and costly musical instruments, only a few venture themselves in studying music and this causes another problem. Few graduates in music mean few experts in the field and when this happens, the opportunity of students to get exposed to the artform also diminishes significantly. Another important factor that affects students’ engagement in music is that schools have not been very supportive in the promotion ‘of music. Only a few school administrators will answer the call of purchasing instruments for students to use at school or even have interest in what opportunities could do best for students who would like to get involved in the field of music. When support systems are scarce and limited, experts will eventually lose their interest in sharing their expertise. “Page| 4 re As an educator, what can we do to aid these problems? It would be unrealistic if we say that we will provide students with musical instruments for we cannot accommodate everyone. The other viable option is to ask for support from the school administration or to find other ways like private sectors to give students equal access to musical instruments. This may not accommodate everyone but at least, we are doing something to elevate students’ engagement and encounter to Music as a complex art form. For teachers, however, seminar-workshop, continuous professional development, training and a degree in music will of great help in sustaining music in the school curricula. D. Performing Arts Other than music, we also need to strengthen students’ engagements in Performing Arts because like music, it is also complex and it often combines music and dance in a single performance. This makes it level-up even further in terms of difficulty. However, when - teachers are equipped with the skills needed for such kind of artform, then it would be easier for them to provide students with the opportunity to harness their skills in the said artwork. Despite the hope of having competent teachers, there were still underlying problems like only a few universities and colleges in the Philippines offer courses in performing arts, and only a few of them as well have performing-art opportunities where students can venture themselves with. So, with these problems rising from below, what we can do is to use our pool of available experts and utilize our resources strategically to teach students with necessary skills in this kind of art form and spark their interest and eventually their love and passion for performing arts. Educators can team up with experts to guide their steps, especially when planning to expose students to this complex art form. E. Visual Arts " Visual Arts can be encouraged among students if they are exposed to it like in art galleries and have experiences in creating one. There are plenty of visual artforms available for students to work on. Unlike other art forms, like music and performance art, visual arts are much accessible to both the students and the teacher however, educators must also be ~ well-trained and possess experience in visual arts to not mislead students with the processes involved both in the creation and appreciation of it. » “ Page|5 Educators can further their skills and effectivity as a teacher if they subject themselves in training and other professional development programs. Because only when teachers are competent and possess the right skill and attitude, students will have the access to a wide array of activities, programs, and opportunities to develop themselves and discover their real passions in life.
