Politics, Glamour and the Arts – Europe in the Spring

It’s Europe’s wedding of the year! On 29 April,
the heir to the British throne Prince William
and his fiancée Kate Middleton are due to ex-
change their marriage vows. The ceremony
will take place at London’s Westminster Ab-
bey. The church will host a glittering gather-
ing of European aristocracy and VIPs from all
over the world. The Archbishop of Canterbury
Rowan Williams will preside over the service.
After the marriage ceremony, the newly-weds
will be transported by carriage to Bucking-
ham Palace. The route leads from Westmin-
ster Abbey through the government quarter of
Whitehall and then along the magnificent Mall

The exhibition “The Art of The Enlightenment” is due to open on 1 April at the
National Museum of China in Beijing. It’s the largest exhibition on European art
of the Enlightenment ever to be shown in Asia. The Berlin State Museums, the
Dresden State Art Collections and the Bavarian State Painting Collections in Mu-
nich are joining forces to present more than 450 exhibits – including world-famous
masterpieces. Following its reconstruction by the Hamburg architectural firm von
Gerkan, Marg and Partners, the National Museum of China is now the largest mu-
seum building in the world. It looms majestically over Tiananmen Square – directly
opposite the Great Hall of the People. The exhibition, which receives substantial
funding from the German Foreign Office, is not just a spectacular art event. It also
carries considerable political significance as the first international guest exhibition

The Big Race – Audi and the DTM

the world throng Formula One and
German Touring Car Masters (DTM)
events. German car manufacturers
pour millions into their appearance
in the major racing series every year.

ing success spells a boost for the
brand, the further development of its associated technologies and the car’s
share of the market. Audi is one of the companies that’s been involved in
motor racing for decades. But what exactly does this commitment bring to
the industry? Made in Germany examines this question in a four-part series.
The program shows the last preparations at Audi for the DTM season 2011,
observes the new DTM team on their test drives and is there to watch the
cars line up on the starting line for the first race in Hockenheim.

Pippi Takes to the Ice
S trong, cheeky and bold – that’s Pippi Long-
stocking, probably the world’s most famous
childrens’ book heroine. Few children are not
familiar with her cute red braids and freckled
face. And every child is envious of her “Villa
Villekulla,” where she lives with a horse and
a monkey.
 The three Pippi Longstocking books by
Swedish author Astrid Lindgren have been
translated into more than 50 languages and
adapted several times for television and the
movies. There’s even been a musical. Now
Pippi is launching herself headlong into a new
adventure, this time on the ice rink. The first
Pippi Longstocking ice musical is due to pre-
miere on 8 April – in Malmö, Sweden’s third
largest city. The show is titled “Adventure on
Ice,” with the main role performed by Swed-
ish ice skater Lina Göransson. The roles of
Pippi’s friends Tommy and Annika are also
played by professional skaters. Director Rolf
Degerlund says the show won’t be in the style
of “Holiday on Ice,” but that it will relate a
“real” story.

attends the dress rehearsal.

Me and My iPhone
Philipp Riederle is Germany’s most successful video podcaster. Every year,
up to a million people download his video operating instructions for the
Apple products iPhone and iPad. In seemingly no time at all, the 16-year-old
student with his blog “Me and My iPhone” has become a sought-after source
of advice for the Apple fan community. His weekly podcasts are especially
popular with the over 50s, for their clear and simple explanations of all the
cult products’ functions. These days, the schoolboy from the small town of
Burgau in Swabia is even invited by big companies such as Telekom and
Universal to hold lectures on the communication habits of his generation,
the “digital natives.” The podcasts are so successful that what began life as a
hobby in the cellar of his parents’ house has since become a small company.
