outdoor spaces?
Lighting plays a crucial role in the outdoor landscape. It
provides a feeling of safety and orientation, creates a site’s
identity, and enhances the attractiveness of its surrounding area.
LED Linear,
uniform wall washing
The LED Linear is ideal for outdoor applications that may require
backlighting, cove lighting, wall washing, or grazing. This highly
advanced and low maintenance fixture complements contemporary
and historical architecture while transforming façades and surfaces
into ‘curtains’ of light.
The LED Linear is available in a range of colors and sizes and features
high-power Luxeon® K2 LEDs, dedicated wide and narrow optics,
high quality materials and lighting electronics.
The versatile / adjustable bracket of the LED Linear allows for close
mounting to various façade, enabling it to blend seamlessly with the
architecture it illuminates.

engineering. Merrill Lynch is an active member of LEED, or Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design, in which they are aspiring to attain
the highest level of energy conservation and health in the corporate
workplace. As another step towards this goal, Philips replaced multiple
230 Watt metal halide fixtures previously hung at one of the campus’
parking garages with solid state LED Low Bay fixtures, and are presently
replacing another 700 with updated versions in three more parking
decks. Here Mark Wetherbee discusses the benefits of switching to the
low wattage LED Low Bay.
Merrill Lynch
“The technology in LED is proven reliable, uses one third the power
and provides a higher lumen output than the metal halide fixture.
There is no re-strike time if the power is interrupted as there is
with metal halide fixtures which can take minutes to relight when
interrupted. LEDs are mercury-free light sources, eliminating the
waste stream contamination and the need to recycle.”
“The [LED Low Bay] is a 50,000 hour device and, at the frequency
of use at the Hopewell Campus, it will be 22 years before I have
to change a light bulb.”
The kit features impact and weather resistant components that are
easy to maintain and use little energy.
How can
lighting transform
indoor spaces?
The medium of light can change and transform a room into a
more meaningful and inviting space, giving it the ability to
enhance a person's sense of well-being, relaxation and comfort.
That is why Philips is strongly committed to composing lighting
intended to create inspiring indoor environments, designed
especially around you.
LED Linear,
indoor transformation
Indoor environments can benefit from the homogenous
wall-washing capabilities of the Philips LED Linear. Thanks to the
fixture’s slim profile, it can be integrated into small architectural
details such as coves and soffits.

York City for the North American premiere.
At every Transitions event around the world, visitors have the incredible
opportunity to enter each expressive container and immerge themselves
into the designer’s creative vision. This year’s event was no different as our
visitors were both amazed and inspired by the dedication and results of the
participating designers.
Ross Nicholson and Philip Gabriel created the North American container
together for Transitions NYC. Ross, an architectural lighting specialist and
luminaire designer, welcomed the opportunity to team up with Philip, his
former employer and the founder of Gabriel/design.That firm has been
brilliantly lighting indoor and outdoor architecture for more than 40 years.
Here, they discuss their lighting experience with Philips at Transitions NYC, Ross Nicholson (left) and Philip Gabriel (right).
as well as the technical process behind actualizing their innovative ideas for
the container.
Transitions 2007
Philip: It was an exciting interactive experience developing the
art for Transitions. Philips has the brilliant idea of using standard
containers as a common base space to create light art. For us it was
a matter of setting up as exact size space in our studio and having
Ross work out his artistic imagination over a three week period.
Often we would brainstorm ideas and react to Ross’ notions with
the design staff .When the time came to install, Phillips sent us to
Atlanta to exhibit fabricators, Czarnowski, where we spent 3 days
working in the container. Finally, after shipping to NYC, we spent
two days finishing off the programming and sound and readied for
the gala light night opening
Ross: Each piece starts with a projection of white light from a regular
halogen lamp. The beam is then intercepted by dichroic filters and
mirrors. The filters separate the white light into two components:
one to be transmitted; the other to be reflected.A blue filter, for
example, allows only the blue component of the white light to pass
through it.The unique property of dichroic glass is that it will reflect,
rather than absorb, the wavelengths of light that are not blue. This
color by definition is the chromatic opposite of blue, which is yellow.
If the filter transmitted red, green light would be reflected back.
Compositions are created through the formal direction and
juxtaposition of filtered effects and reflections. Re-combination of
the light from different filters provides for a vibrant palette and
some extremely saturated chroma.

Snowflake spectacle
Each year during the holiday season, 5th Avenue in New York City brightly
shines and dazzles bystanders as the ever popular Saks Fifth Avenue
Snowflake Spectacle takes place.
Philips Lighting partnered with Saks Fifth Avenue and created this high tech
light show that combines holiday tradition with advanced LED technology.
Every 15 minutes, the custom-made snowflakes illuminate in such a way
that makes it seem as though they are falling and dancing across the façade
of the building. And, in reaching beyond New York City, representations of
these illuminated snowflakes also appear in all 54 Saks Fifth Avenue stores
across the nation.
