READING VISUAL

ART

UNIT 1 TASK 2
INDIVIDUAL PRACTICE:

From the five (5) visual texts you will see in the following pages, select one

(1) you wish to analyze. Be guided by the questions you have encountered

previously. All the visual texts below can be found online. Follow the URL to

view the texts in full color.

WHO

1. What people are depicted in the image (even if there are now actual people

in the image, whose culture or experiences are being shown?

2. Who created the image and for what purpose?

3. Who is the intended audience for the image?

4. Whose point of view does the image take?

- Among the five visual texts that was presented, my picked of interest

is the Dove Shampoo. As what I have seen and perceived from the text

image, the woman with a beautiful, wavy, shiny and healthy hair can be

seen. She looks foreign not a Filipina. Her hair and outfit compliments

the colors used in the text and brand of the shampoo. Dove Shampoo

or products is popular worldwide and is owned by someone

internationally. They export their products because it is widely used and

as the same time and trusted by people around the world. They already

established their name in the field of hygiene, self-care and cleanliness

and so it is understandable that many people is expecting from them

always. As I have seen from the image or visual texts, their products

are varying depending on the different types of users and buyers. Like
for example there are products filtered and specifically for the sensitive

ones and depending on the sex of customers buying. They have these

considerations flavors or fragrance of the product for the better

experience, choice and complexity and differences of their buyers. We

can say that fro m the proof of the hair of the model of the Dove

Shampoo that from the perceptions of customers like me, because I

also use Dove for my own benefit that it could really be effective and

reliable if tried on.

ISSUES

1. What issues are being shown in the image?

2. How is the way the issue is shown in the image similar to or different from

how you see this issue in the world?

3. What might this image mean to someone who sees it?

4. What is the message of the image?

- Advertisements as what we can see in televisions, ads, billboards, print

pages, social media platforms and many more greatly influence and persuade

people to try out these things presented nationwide or worldwide. Big amount

of money is also needed for the accomplishment and success of these things.

And in return, financial triumph is also the replacement. There is always a risk if

you want to succeed and there are so many problems along the way that

people will also encounter. In the visual texts presented there is a phrase that

says, “Get 7x Smoother Hair in Just One Wash*” in the large text font size and

on the next line, “*versus using non-conditioning Shampoo” in much smaller

text font size. This is what I have noticed since it claims that the product is
better compared using other non-conditioning shampoo. It is not really a

negative thing because it promotes its strength as a product but when you

think of it deeply, it discourages people to try out other non-conditioning

products and use theirs just because. Many people use Dove products around

the world because they already have the name in the industry and I don’t see

any problems or issue tackling the product because of its versatility to different

users around the world and that it is accessible and can be bought to many

stores worldwide. There is a membership shop in other country that this

product can be bought so there is a problem to some since Costco Wholesale

Corporation is an American multinational corporation which operates a chain of

membership-only big-box retail stores. However, because of its big demand in

the market Dove products are sold in developing countries. People who see

these Dove Shampoo and Conditioner image would tell that they are well

informed because of the brief and important texts. The message clearly says

and includes the purpose of the product as a dual purpose shampoo. It is a

shampoo and a conditioner in one. The details or strengths of the product that

follow are its information about how smooth the product is compared to non-

conditioning shampoos, where can it be bought, the different types of their

shampoo and conditioner as based to the sensitivity and variety of buyers, the

contact numbers, and the way it reacts and solves problems with people with

hair issues.

INFORMATION

1. Where has the information in the image come from?

2. What information has been included and what information has been left out?

3. What proportion of the image could be inaccurate?

4. What information presented is factual/manipulated/framed?

5. What is the relationship between the image and any text?

6. What impact does the size of images within the picture have?

- In my own perspective, the information in the image came from the brief

texts that were added and visible. They were clearly stated although it is in the

phrase-types and they were adjusted based from its importance. The important

texts are in larger sizes and the ones that could persuade and get the attention

of viewers and buyers while there are texts in smaller sizes but still significant.

The information’s included were all important for me. It included the purpose of

the product as a dual purpose shampoo. It is a shampoo and a conditioner in

one. The details or strengths of the product that follow are its information

about how smooth the product is compared to non-conditioning shampoos,

where can it be bought, the different types of their shampoo and conditioner as

based to the sensitivity and variety of buyers, the contact numbers, and the

way it reacts and solves problems with people with hair issues. I think one

issue that people must be reminded and take caution of is the lifespan of the

product and what dangers can be faced when this products is used. The

model’s hair can be seen as perfectly caught in the camera with no flaws on it.

She was radiant, manages to have a clear and healthy skin, depicts a demure

face, and has that long, wavy, shiny and beautiful hair that women envy. There

is also a relationship that can be seen between the image and the texts

presented. I believe that the texts are there as supporting details to the image
we see. How the hair is perfectly beautiful, wavy and shiny is supported by the

texts saying the brand’s advanced moisture shampoo and conditioner. With the

supporting details and great minds provided by the team of professionals

behind the product, more people will flock because it is informative and almost

complete.

PERSUASION

1. Why has a certain media been chosen?

2. Why was a particular image chosen?

3. Why was the image arranged that way?

4. Is the information contained in the image factual?

5. What devices have been used to get the message across to the viewer?

6. How has the message been affected by what has been left out or is not

shown?

- Specifically, the media used was a visual text and it can also be visited in

many social media platforms just like the link that was provided. It is a great

idea to have these kinds of strategies in the business because they have many

competitors in the field. People will also go to those convenient and trendy

things that makes their life easier so I think that having these things be

posted in Social Medias and with easier access sites and places will bring more

people or market to the product. Aside from the model, the product was also

put into focus. This is for the people to see the response or effect of the

product to people. Unless tried, the nutritional facts or ingredients at the back
portion of the brand will bring justice to the texts included. In the delivery of

these images, any form of media would do. . DSLR Camera, Photoshop,

Billboards, Television, Cellular Phones with data, Computer with Wi-Fi

connectivity and Social media sites are used and can be used to deliver the

message across the viewer. In conclusion, the text image is very informative

and almost complete with its details. There will be little or if the said brand

decides to lure their buyers, there will be an issue that would arise.

ASSUMPTIONS

1. What attitudes are assumed?

2. Whose voice is heard?

3. Whose voice is not heard?

4. What experiences or points of view are assumed?

- Assumptions refer to a thing that is accepted as true or as certain to

happen, without proof according to the dictionary. As reflected on the picture,

the attitude assumed in the face of the model of the product was being

beautiful, demure face, radiant and classy. The voices that can be heard from

the image are from women and can also be to men because of the versatility of

Dove. They may be envious of the hair and looks up to what the result is. All in

all, these kind of visual texts are their way of promoting and persuading their

buyers. Because it is well informed and the proportions of the images and texts

are well managed, I can say that they are good and long engaged with these

kind of advertising a product when they are also a big company to know with.
