A SELFJECTOR Instruction Manual 2-1 Operation ~ a n u a l l

2.1' Gear pump
The gear pump feeds feed oil to the purifier, Mounted an the horizontal shafl: of the purifier via a safety joint,
it is driven by the motor for the purifier.
The gear pump can be selected to match a pahwlar treating capacity.
Instead of the gear pump, a separate pump may be used.

2.2 Oil heater

Indalled m d w y betwsen the gear pump and oil purifier, h e oil heater warms feed oil fed by the gear pump
; to an optimum beating temperature. The heater is classified into steam and electrical typee. The steam type
'
is provided with a temperature ~~l valve and the electrical type with a thermostat to conVal the
1 temperaturn.
'
Before oil is treated by the oil purifier, it must be heated up to a certain temperature according to the
particular oil vismsity and nature.

2.3 3-way cyllndar valve

The 3-way cylinders valve is a pneumstically opsrated selector valve and feeds feed oil to the purifier.
When darling, stopped or discharging sludge, it is changed to return the oil Yia tha bypass piping to the
&n k.
1

2.4 Leakage Monltor (LM)

The Leakage Monitor detects oil to treat from the bowl's sludge outlet or heavy liquid cutlet and outputs an
*
alarm to the control panel.
It.is installed on tha purified oil outlet piping. By means of a pressure c M d valve, a .constant pressure is
applied at all times and if the pmssure has dropped, it is attributed to "leakage" and the monitor delivers an
alarm to the control panel.

2.5 Water Detector

The Water Detectw is an dectmstatic type. It resorts to the principle that, as water content in oil rises, the
capacitance (dielech constant) increases. Installed on the purified oil outlet piping, it sends a signal to the
control panel if the water content in purified oil has exceeded a trigger value for sludge discharge.

2.6 Starter .
The purifer is started by the sta*. It is stopped by a signal from the corrtrol panel when an automatic stop
alarm has been generated.

2.7 Control panel

The control panel automatically controls the cycle of purifying the feed liquid by purifier and discharging the
sludge. If an alarm from the d&&r is inputted while running, feed liquid flow is stopped and, via a
specified sequence, the purifier is stopped.

2.8 Alarm panel

, The alarm panell changes over the 3-way cylinder valve through switching. Feed liquid flow is stopped if an
alarm is inputted from the detector while nrnning. (The purifier can be stopped.)
i

A SELFJECTOR Instruction Manual 2-2 Operation ~ a n u a l l

2.9 Discharge Detector (DD)
The Discharge Detector monitors sludge discharges and outputs an alarm to the control panel when an
abnomal discharge takes place. It detects a drop in horizontal shaft speed at sludge discharge by means of
a proximity switch and debmines if the sludge discharge has been properly effectedfrom the input data by
means of a comparison circuit In addition to .the alarm output function, the partral discharge type purifier
Discharge Detector has an indicating functhn to MI whether or not the sludge discharge is optimal during
partial discharge adjustment

3.3 Bowl
3.3.1 Structure of bowl
The bowl vessel mainly consists of body, hood and nut. The bowl incorporates separation chamber
composd of disc (1) and top disc and distributor which distributes feed liquid from the bowl inlet to the
separation chamber uniformly.
There is a main cylinder which slides vertically by water pressure to discharge sludge separated and
accumulated on the inner wall of bowl during operation.
At 2 points on the outer periphery of bowl, there are pilot valve assemblies for controlling the main
cylinder slide.
When feed liquid introduced through the feed liquid Inlet through the distributor to the separation
chamber passes through the gap between discs {I), solids and water are separated and purified oil is
continually delivered outside by the centripetal pump (light liquid impeller) located on the top ofbowl.
For SJ 1OF-SJ30F, separated water overflows continually.
For SJ40F-SJIQOF, separated water is continually discharged outside by the heavy liquid impeller.

Gravity disc
For purifier opetation, the interface for separating light liquid and heavy llquid in the bowl must be held
to within a certain range. On SELFJECTOR, gravity discs of different inner diameters are used to
change ihe heavy liquid outlet diameter, thereby ccotmlling the interface position.
Select an optimum gravity disc according to "Gravitydisc selecting procedure" in Operation manual 2.
X : For the HIDENSE specifications use the gravity disc for clarifier.

When operating water has filled up the bowl opening water
pressure chamber, with part of it released out through the
drain n o d s , its pressure slides the pilot valve toward the
shaft center to breaks the seal of the valve seat. This causes
part d operating watar in the bawl closing water pressure
chamber to be let out, rnducingthe force pushing up the main
cylinder. The main cylinder is pushed down by liquid pressure
in the bawl as a result. This breaks fha seal of main sml ring,
allowing sludge to be instantly discharged out of h e bowl.

When the supply of opedng water for opening bowl is

stopped, its overnow inta the bowl opening water pressure
chamber is discontinued. As a result, the bawl clusing water
pressure c h a m h is filled up and its operating water pushes
up the main cylinder, sealing the main seal ring, At this point
of time, the-valve sea4 has already been sealed.

The main cylinder is quickly operated up and down to effect

partial discharge. This allwlrs only suldge in the bowl to be
discharged with minimum oil loss.

3.4 Water supplying device
The water supplying device is provided under the bowl to supply operating water for controlling the

3.4.1 Total dlscharge

Operating water for opening bowl is fed from section A in Ffg. 3-16 and enters the water pressure

: Operating water for closing bowl is fed from section B and enters the water pressure chamber For
closing bowl.
; Operating water for closing bowl is intermittentlyfed for a certain time during the purifying operation.
'
Because operating water in the water pressure chamber for closing bowl rotates together with the
bowl, the pressure generated its oentnfugal force and the prsssure of operating water for closing bowl
balance and the water level stabilizes at a certain position. Therefare, water is made up only for the

for closing bowl and operating water for opening bowl for partial discharge are inboduced from B and
operating wawr for closing h i for bbl discharge is supplied from A.
Operating water f e d from 0 fills up the bowl closing water pmsure chamber first and w~rflowsinta
the bowl opening M e r pressure chamber to eff& partial discharge operation. For total discharge, the
sequence of operating water described in 3.4.1 takes place.
As operating water for opening bowl, compressed fr& water regulated to a c e h i n m u r e is used.
The pressure of operating water for closing bowl is regulated by reducing valve of the operating water
line as well. Operating water for closing bowl is so much lower in pressure than opedng water for
opening bowl that it will not oveflm from the h l closing water pressure chamber into the bewl
opming water pressure chamber. Also, as is in the case of 3.4.1, operating water for dosing bowl is
intermtbntly supplied for a certain period of time during purifier opemtion, In the bowl closing water

The purifier has a heavy rquid outlet for continually discharging sr#pambd water.
m Before introducing oil, water sealing is required so that Mil fill not flaw out lhrough the heavy liquid

Fw normal operetion, the interface (F)muat be set to within a specified range by changing the

3.6.2 Clarifier operation
The clarifier operation refers to a separation into 2 phases or oil and (water + sludge).

1. When h e specSfic gravity of oil ta trmt exceeds 0.991 (at I%), the rgpecific gravity range
c a v e d by a g r a m disc narrows. As the specific gravity nears 0.999 (at 15"C), tha treatment
gets easy ta be affectad by temperature, flwv variation and ewer operating condition changes,
thereby causing abnormal ouHFow or pow separation. Therefore, a clarifier operation is
recommended.
2. For clarifier operation, there is no heavy liquid outM for discharging separated water and,
therefore, separated water cannot b d i a r g e d mn2lnualiy.
I
The HIDENS SYSTEM consists of partial discharge clarifier and Water Detector and, when the
Water Detector provided at the putifled oil outlet has detected a certain amount of s e p a m d
wter in the M,d i s c h a m separated water. This system combines a feature of clarifier or
freedom from mbnmal outflow, etc. and a feature of purfm or eantinual water separation and is
capable of stable purifying operation without using a gravity disc for fuel oil whose s p i f gravity
~
is up to I.OJ (at ISt).
3. Water sealing is unneoessary.

3.7 Parallel operatlon and serles operation

So long as the feed rate is within the actual capacity, 1 stage of purification suffioes bas*mlly.
When, however, treating ail for which catalyst mixture, excessive sludge, etc. are expected, raising the
punfyrng fleet is required utilizing spare m&in@s).

In this cam, the purifiers are subjected t~ either:

Parallel (parallel puryllng) operatlon

In case d a series operatlm by 2 SELFJECTORs, detach the gear pump furnished wlth the
latter stage SELFJECTOR from the safety joint because It Is not usad.
Do not use the oil heater for the latter stage.

For a series operatran, the former stage is for purifier operation and the latter stage is for clarifier
operation usually.
rn In case of a series operation by 2 machines, a general practice is purifier operation for the former
stage aml clarifw operation for the latter stage.
The feed rate must be the same as for a single operation.

NOTE
In case of a series operatlon, when the furmar stage SELFSECTOR enters into the
dlscharglng process, no all Is I n h d u c e d into the latter stage SELFJECTOR [as Is the case
where the operation Is stopped by an alarm signal) durlng the discharge, Thle causes the
