Hazelwood School District Board of Education

15955 New Halls Ferry Road
St. Louis, Missouri 63031

Dear Hazelwood School District Board of Education:

Thank you for partnering with our Police Departments in the School Resource Officer program. Please
know we place great value in this collaborative effort and remain committed to maintaining a safe and
secure environment in your school district. After our careful review and discussion regarding the request -
to add contract language that requires our School Resource Officers to participate in a minimum of 10
hours per contract year of professional development on diversity, equity, and inclusion provided by the
school district, we believe our officers receive training that is more than adequate and addresses the
critical matters of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The training of our officers is a priority. Our School Resource Officers receive training specific to their
duties as a School Resource Officer which is certified by Missouri POST (Peac-e Officer Standards are
Training). In addition, our officers receive their training at the St. Louis County and Municipal Police
Academy, which is distinguished as a CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement
Agencies) Accredited training facility and a Missouri POST "Approved Provider" of training. Our
officers adhere to all state mandates and departmental expectations of officers regarding training.

Missouri POST mandates twenty-four hours of continuing education every year for each officer. Of
those twenty-four hours, officers must obtain a minimum of 2 hours in legal studies, 2 hours in technical
studies, 2 hours in interpersonal perspectives, 1 hour of racial profiling, 1 hour in implicit-bias training,
and 1 hour of de-escalation training. Our police officers have all received 600 hours of training to be
POST certified and will continue to complete 24 hours of POST certified continuing education every
year.

Cultural awareness has long been a part of the St. Louis County and Municipal Police Academy
curriculum. Missouri POST certified training instructors and subject-matter experts outside of law
enforcement implement this curriculum. This curriculum includes training on diversity, equity, and
inclusion.
