Thought Bubble
Have you wondered what would happen if your mother tongue had become non-existent? What
will happen to the younger generations especially in the transition to another language? Using
the thought bubble, connect with a classmate and write your thoughts about what you could do to
avoid the death and loss of your language.
Baybayin is an ancient pre-colonial script that dates back to the 13th century CE (it could
be older). Spanish friars in the 1600s documented its use among the Tagalogs for legal
proceedings, petitions, land deeds, and the like. However, baybayin did not survive into modern
times because the colonizers imposed the use of the Western alphabet. Bringing baybayin back is
the ultimate throwback.
If it will be supported by the government, learning Baybayin here in the country will
become easier through the help of dedicated individuals who are ready to impart their
knowledge about the scripture.
The government should introduce this through subtle or basic ways, like in signage’s
or labels. Baybayin should also be taught at schools as an additional topic for Filipino subject or
be part in our history class. It should also be introduce slowly to kindergartens or elementary
students since they are all still starting to write and read, while the children or the next generation
can pick it up easily and with that, Baybayin will slowly be revived.
Baybayin has been a part of us as Filipinos, and hopefully, people would start learning it
in order to gain new knowledge, spread awareness, and appreciate our culture by taking a look
back at our history or roots. We should all appreciate and be blessed to still have something
unique to be proud for.
