Composition/Data on Components:
Main constituent is Casein blended with starch, emulsified with polymer in non-ionic
100% emulsifie, rosin, imported resin, metallic powder & preservatives
General requirements
The material shall be non-corrosive, water based or water reduceable of
uniform consistency free from dirt and lumps and segregation or settling
to such an extent as to render dispersion difficult, as determined by visual
examination.
The adhesives should receive as top open-able buckets, with the name of
the material, name or logo of the manufacturer, Identification in code or
B.No. & month of manufacture, weight of the container, shelf life &
Directions for storage & application.
It should be free from objectionable odour. It should not have any
bleaching or deepening effect on the colour of paper on which it is to be
used.
After application to labels the adhesives shall dry to a substantially
colourless transparent finish & shall not reduce legibility of printed label
text when viewed at a distance of 50cm from the observer’s eye.
Pump-ability must be free flowing
Spreading of the adhesive should be uniform in the roller.
Labels/foils after labelling should adhere tightly & ‘Skid free’ as specified in the
adhesive specification document
The adhesives as received shall be capable of being applied smoothly by
machines through out the temperature range of 5 to 45°C when tested.
Approval
Adhesive manufacturer who is able to meet our receiving conditions/
specifications and whose samples have been approved by CTC can proceed for a
plant scale trial. Initially a trial lot will be tested for a shopfloor performance
before approval & it should confirm to specifications. The approval may be
withdrawn if the deliveries are not up to the desired quality standard (deviation
if more than 3 times consecutively).

Shelf life
6 months from the date of manufacturing
Precautions in use:
1. Do not mix with other adhesives.
2. Thoroughly wash all machine parts with glue contact area with warm
water while switching over to our adhesive.
3. Stir Adhesive thoroughly before use.
4. Close the container when not in use
Storage:
Requirement to be met by store rooms and containers: Observe official
regulations on storing packaging having non-hazardous chemicals.
Adhesives can be stored in common storage. Protect from frost and store
under dry conditions.
Do not use with any other adhesive. Close the containers when not in use.
Sampling:
Samples shall not be taken in exposed conditions
Material in three containers shall be mixed thoroughly before drawing
the sample. Composite sample is thoroughly mixed & is taken for
analysis. Close the lid tightly after drawing the required sample.
All the containers of the same size in a single consignment of the material
drawn from a single batch of manufacture shall constitute a batch. If a
consignment consists of different batches/size of containers, the
containers belonging to same batch or same size shall be grouped
together and each group shall constitute a separate lot.
Sample shall be tested for each lot received for ascertaining the
conformity of the material to the specification.
Quality requirements
Laboratory tests
A random sample is taken from 3 comtainers & the composite sample is taken for
analysis. The following control at the production site is carried out.
1. Appearance: The sample should be viscous liquid with white or yellowish tinge
4. Viscosity: Weigh 20g of the adhesive & add 100 ml of water, mix the adhesive by
using magnetic stirrer. Pour about 100ml of the mixed sample into the Ford cup
II & record the time when the cup is completely empty.
Specification: 40 ± 5 seconds (for 140,000 ± 20,000 Cps)
Note: The above procedure is applicable for the sites where Brook field
Viscometer is not available. The unit can perform the above test by using Ford
Cup II to verify the viscosity values, to ensure adherence to specification.
6. Drying time:
1. Apply adhesive on the label allow it to dry in air at ambient temperature for 2
mins. Apply this label onto a bottle. The material can be taken as passes if the
label drops down itself from the bottle
2. Apply adhesive on the label & paste it onto a bottle. Allow it to dry for 2
mins. After 2 mins, it can be stripped without leaving any paper fibres
adhering to the bottle.

7. Coverage: This is the area covered by the adhesive & reported as g/m2. For this
Area of the labels needs to measured.
Measurement of Area of Front, Back, Neck/Foil:
For rectangular label, the area will be L X B
For Diecut labels, cut 1cm2 piece of the label & note down the specific area
cm2/g Then take the weight of entire label & multiply with Specific area (cm2/g).
For ex: Area of 1cm2 = A cm2/g
Weight of entire label: B gram
Area of labels= A X B (cm2)
Note: The Area of the Labels will be different for Chromoart/Metalised/ Wet-
strength papers.
Coverage of the Adhesive can be calculated by the following methods:
1. Method 1:
Take average weight of 10 labels. (C grams)
Remove the label with the glue from the pallet before pasting onto
the bottles & ensure that label is held in such a way that glue should
not fall from the label.
Take the weight of the label
Same exercise needs to performed for at least 10 labels.
Take the average weight of those 10 labels (with glue).(D grams)
Calculate weight of the glue (D-C)
Calculate gum consumed/cm2 i.e. (D-C)/(A X B)
OR
2. METHOD 2: This is usually the Quantity of Glue consumed in gms for No of
Bottles Produced & Area of Labels used in a bottle in cm2
*Note- Area of Labels Include area of Front Label, Back Label & Neck Foil
This can be performed as given below:
Put a known quantity of glue to the drum (X grams)
Count the no. of bottles labelled, with that quantity of glue (Y)
Measure the area of labels (Front+Back+Neck/Foil, as the case may be
with reference to bottle dress. as mentioned above (Z cm2)
So Quantity of the glue required for 1cm2 surface area of lebel is
= X g/cm2
(Y X Z)
Note: To get accurate coverage results:
1. Entire content of drum needs to be emptied.
2. There should be no loss of adhesive during this evaluation.

8. Solid content: Take about 5g of adhesive in a pre-weighed petri dish & allowed it
to dry completely in hot air oven at 105deg. After the completion of drying
process, keep the pertidish in a desiccator. Take the final weight & calculate the
dry solid content of adhesive in terms of %.
