Aim of the experiment: To make a 2D model of the solar system

Materials required: Paper plate (white) / cut out A4 in circle ,cardboard

sheet / shoe box / stick two papers / cover of old notebooks,

strings / wool / threads / wires,

colouring pencils / crayons for circles

get caps of different sizes - bottle cap/ jar lid / saucer or dish / bangles of
different sizes / bowls / tumblers or glass/ cups to cut round shaped paper
for sun and the planets

Procedure:

For those who have cardboard or paper plates

Step 1: Cut out a circle of diameter 30cm from the
cardboard or take a big size paper plate. You will get a
round cardboard piece

Step 2: Draw 8 concentric circles on this round cardboard

piece. The arrows mark the 8 circles.
30cm

Step 3: Cut out 9 round shaped pieces from another of

paper. The size of round pieces should match with the
size of the 8 planets and the Sun. For example the biggest
round piece will be Sun and the smallest round piece will
be of mercury.

Step 4: Color the Sun and the planet accordingly. Show

the rings of Saturn. Make very small holes on top of all
the 8 planets and the Sun.

Step 5: Now make a hole in the middle of the round

shaped cardboard piece and 8 very small holes on the
circle respectively. The red dot represents the holes to be
made.

Step 6: Take 9 pieces of string/wool/thread and make a

knot on one end. Now insert the string/wool/thread
through the holes in such a way that the knotted end is
on top of the cardboard and loose end is hanging from
the cardboard.

Step 7: Now tie the loose ends of the strings with the
holes made on the planets and the Sun.

For those who do not have cardboard or paper plates

Step 1: Paste two A4 size sheets and then cut out a circle
of diameter 30cm. You will get a round shaped paper.

Step 2: Draw 8 concentric circles on this round shaped

paper. The arrows mark the 8 circles.
