C. PRESENTATION
FIGURES OF SPEECH- a method of conveying meaning or heightening effect by
comparing or identifying one thing with another that has a meaning or connotation that the
reader or listener is familiar with.
1. SIMILE- It is a figure of speech in which the words "like" or "as" are used to
compare two different objects. A simile is a metaphor that is used to describe
something by comparing it to something else that appears to be unrelated.
Examples:
● Her love for her children is as constant as the passing of time.
● Eren and Armin fought like cats and dogs.
2. METAPHOR- It is a figure of speech that helps convey an idea or establish a
comparison by describing an object or activity in a way that isn't literally true.
Metaphors are utilized in poetry, literature, and anywhere else when people want
to add some flavor to their words.
Examples:
● Your daughter was a shining star in our classroom.
● The tall trees were curtains that surrounded us during our picnic.
3. HYPERBOLE- It's a figure of speech in which an author or speaker exaggerates
to the point of absurdity. It's utilized to emphasize a point or to make a description
more creative and amusing. It's vital to keep in mind that hyperbole isn't supposed
to be taken literally; the audience is aware that it's a stretch.
Examples:
● Mikasa died everyday waiting for Eren.
● Annie was so hungry that she could eat dirt right now.
4. IDIOM/S- It's a figurative connotation for a statement, phrase, or permanent
expression in a society. An idiom acquires its meaning through cultural repetition,
and it is frequently presented through literature, the media, well-known persons,
or associations that make sense at first then lose their literal meaning.
Examples:
● Cool as a cucumber - to be very calm under stress.
● Out of the blue - with no warning.
5. PROVERBS- This is a short, frequent phrase used to express general truths in
today's language.
Examples:
● A cat has nine lives - cats can survive seemingly dangerous experiences.
● Actions speak louder than words - actions are a better reflection of one’s
character because it’s easy to say things, but difficult to act on them and
follow through.
