About the OLP-3057 Power Meter

About the OLP-3057 Power Meter

The handheld Optical Power Meter OLP-3057 measures
power levels on fiber optic systems.

It is designed for the highest performing tests on all optical

signals and systems, for example, broadband, PONs, and
Gigabit Ethernet. Battery operation and the robust, shock-
proof design allow a long operation time in the field even
under tough conditions. AC line operation, with a separate AC
adapter, allows comfortable use in labs or production environ-
ments.

For optimal performance, update the software to the latest

version. For instructions on updating the software, refer to the
HST-3000 Base Unit User’s Guide.

NOTE:
For additional information about HST-3000 options, SIMs,
and services, contact your local JDSU representative or
contact JDSU through the company web site,
www.jdsu.com.

Features and capabilities of the OLP-3057 include the

following.

– Tests on systems from different manufacturers with

different connector types are easy to handle due to the
universal adapter system. The test adapters are suitable
both for connectors with planar (PC) and angled (APC)
end surfaces. For detailed ordering information see
“Ordering information” on page 34. However the OLP-
3057 connector must mach the type of the cable
connector:
– PC (BN 2291/02, BN 2291/03)
– APC (BN 2291/22, BN 2291/23)

2 HST-3000 OLP-3057 Optical Power Meter User’s Guide

Chapter 1 Getting Started
About the OLP-3057 Power Meter

– Three optical measurement modes: absolute, relative,

and pass/fail.
– 1310/1490/1550 nm selective power measurement
The OLP-3057 features a port to which PON downstream
links (from OLT) can be connected. The signals at wave-
lengths 1490 nm and 1550 nm are filtered and measured
separately. This power meter port is calibrated at the
respective center wavelength.
– Through path
The OLP-3057 features a second port for PON upstream
links (from ONU) at 1310 nm to be connected. Signals
from this port are passed through to the 1490/1550 nm
port and vice versa. Thus the OLP-3057 can be transpar-
ently inserted into the PON network.
– 1310 nm uplink burst power measurements
The OLP-3057 features the measurement of burst type
signals as found in the PON uplink paths at 1310 nm. The
average burst power is displayed independently from the
burst duty cycle (active/idle). This power meter port is cali-
brated at the respective center wavelength.
– Additional broadband mode
The OLP-3057 features non-selective power measure-
ments via the port on the side of the SIM. In this mode the
OLP-3057 FTTx tester behaves like a standard broad-
band power meter, that is, attenuation measurements can
be done as usual with a suitable optical source. The
JDSU OLS-55 Optical Light Sources are ideal for this
application. Both modulated and unmodulated light
signals can be measured. For modulated light signals, the
average power is displayed. The broadband power meter
is calibrated at 850 nm, 1310 nm,1550 nm and 1625 nm.
The modulated signal mode with different fixed frequen-
cies can be used to identify fibers in a fiber bundle, for
example. The “Auto λ“ function allows automatic wave-
length detection. A wavelength encoding light source is
needed to support this feature e.g. the JDSU OLS-55
Optical Light Sources.

cap.

Cleaning the test ports

It is a good idea to check that the optical connections are
clean and, if necessary, to clean them before starting
measurements. Even very small dust particles on the end
surfaces of the plugs or in the test adapters can adversely
affect the accuracy of the measurement. Cover the optical
connections with the dust cap whenever they are not in use.
This prevents them from getting dirty.

To clean the test ports

1 If the HST is on, press the green power button to power
down the unit.

Modulated light The OLP-3057 automatically detects the modulation

frequency of light signals modulated at the fixed frequencies
270 Hz, 1 kHz and 2 kHz. CW is displayed if it is a constant
wave.

Auto lambda Auto lambda is a special feature invented by JDSU to identify

recognition wavelengths automatically. Therefore, the signal is modulated
(in a light source equipped with Auto lambda [also called
“AUTO λ”], like the JDSU OLS-55/-56) by a certain frequency,
which can be detected by the OLP-3057.

It may not be possible to detect wavelengths reliably if the

following issues occur.

– if the receive level is too low

– if the wavelength encoding cannot be detected due to

interference
– if you are measuring the absolute level of a system that
does not have wavelength encoding like JDSU’s power
sources
