End Unfair Corporate Tax Breaks

Special tax breaks and loopholes cost Washingtonians billions of dollars every year. That’s money that
should be going healthcare, education and other essential public services. Below are some examples
of unjustified corporate tax breaks.

• Tax break for Wall Street banks: $100 million per year
The B&O deduction on interest from first home mortgages was originally intended to help a
major bank headquartered in Washington compete with other national banks. There are no
longer any major banks headquartered in here and the vast majority of mortgages are originated
by out-of-state banks or sold to out-of-state banks. The deduction no longer makes sense.

• Sales tax break for elective cosmetic surgery: $8 million per year
Includes: teeth whitening, and laser eye surgery.

• Special tax break for private jets: $5 million per year

Owners of private jets currently pay a flat fee, regardless of the size or value of their jet. Very
wealthy private jet owners should pay their fair share.

• Sales tax break for out-of-state coal: $11 million per year
Sales tax is exempt on coal used at coal-fired thermal electric generation facilities.

• Sales tax break for out-of-state shoppers: $44 million per year
Currently, out-of-state shoppers from Oregon, some Canadian provinces, and other states that
have a sales tax rate of less than 3 percent are not required to pay the sales tax on purchases
made in Washington.

• Sales tax break for fertilizer: $40 million per year

• Sales tax break for consumer services: $100 million per year
Includes: hair removal, massages, movie theaters, beauty parlors, acupuncture, sporting
events, investment advice, and many others.

Many tax loopholes look small but add up. When we are cutting deeply into education and healthcare,
these seemingly small tax subsidies just don’t make sense:

• Sales tax exemption for film and video production equipment: $2 million a year
• Sales tax exemption for display items for tradeshows: $2 million a year
• B&O exemption for Christmas tree production: $500,000/year
• Fish tax exemption for tuna, mackerel and jack: $340,000 a year
• Sales tax exemption for bedding materials for chickens: $180,000 a year
• B&O exemption for fish cleaning businesses: $11,000 a year
• 31Sales tax exemption for medically

CAPITOL CAMPUS DO’s and DON’Ts

1. Please remember – the Capitol Campus is OUR house. We need to re-

spect the rules and do the best we can to keep our house and yard clean and
in good condition.
2. Please stay on the designated walkways as much as possible. The grounds
are super-saturated from our winter wet weather, and our State sisters and
brothers have reduced numbers to repair our day of walking over the Capitol
Campus grounds.
3. Please keep food and drink out of the Capitol and legislative offices to
the extent possible. Capped bottles of water are ok.
4. We are all (hopefully) bringing signs with our messages to the Capitol on
the 8th! Please be advised that signs are appropriate in all capitol facilities,
AS LONG AS THERE ARE NO STICKS. Signs on sticks should be left
behind and recovered upon leaving the building you are in.
5. We are asking all not to leave signs behind in the trash. Please TAKE ALL
SIGNS HOME WITH YOU. The amount of room that signs take up in the
trash is substantial.
6. We will be providing light lunch ( beef hotdogs, chips, soft drink) to all who
wish to partake at the IBEW –operated food stand. Please be vigilant about
disposing all food trash and related paper products.
7. There will be lots and lots of people on the Capitol Campus on the 8th. This
is a good day to be your brother/sister’s keeper. We will be in very crowded
conditions in some locations. Keep an eye out for one another; watch how
you turn if you have a sign on a stick; help someone who may look like they
may slip or fall.
8. There will be peacekeepers at all congestion points, and at other points.
They are identified by either an orange safety vest or a red arm band. Please
allow them to exercise their crowd control functions. Their intervention or
request for assistance will prevent official law enforcement from making
more strongly worded requests.
