THIRD GENERATION D.O.

PROBES
The OxyGuard third generation DO probe is the longest lasting and easiest to use DO probe that
you can obtain. It protects your fish better than any other type of probe. It can (in air) measure
correctly for three years without any attention. In water it can function well for many years
before renovation is needed. Do not open the probe unless the membrane is damaged or the
probe is several years old and cannot be calibrated.
The OxyGuard probe uses a very small amount of oxygen, so the biological film that forms on
all surfaces in healthy marine environments cannot trap oxygen at the probe, causing a memory
effect. Such a film will only act as a slight increase in membrane thickness. A quick and easy
check at regular intervals will confirm that your fish are fully protected. Please note that in order
to measure correctly all dissolved oxygen probes must show 100% saturation when in the air.

Use
Place the probe
a) Between 30 cm under the surface and 30 cm from the bottom.
b) Where water and oxygen is well mixed,
c) Where it cannot strike against the tank wall or other object.
d) With easy access for cleaning and calibration. A position near the outflow is recommended.

Regular Care
Once a month (or once a week, depending on actual conditions)
Wipe the membrane. Check measurements (in the water) before and after wiping. If they are
the same, you can choose longer intervals. Contact OxyGuard if membrane fouling is severe.
As needed
Take the probe up, wipe the membrane, hang it in the air. Check that the measurement is soon
between 98% and 103% saturation. This is a good, quick check that both probe and system
are working. If the air temperature is stable the measurement should, within 30 minutes, reach
close to the calibration value of 100.5. The probe must have attained the same temperature as
the air. If necessary follow the instructions for your system to start automatic calibration.
As needed (e.g. after 5 to 10 years)
Probe renovation can be needed after many years use or if the membrane is damaged (see
fault finding). See the system manual for details. The cost of materials for this is about $5.

Fault Finding
Unstable measurements
a) Make sure the probe is not placed where there are bubbles, e.g. over a diffuser.
b) Take the probe up, inspect it, shake it. If the measurement is unstable when you shake it, or
if you can hear it is half empty, the membrane might be damaged. Renovate the probe.
c) Check for bad connections or moisture. Joins must be completely dry. You can exchange
the probe with one that is OK to see if the fault moves with the probe or stays. If the fault
moves renovate the probe. If the fault stays you can then connect the good probe directly to
the DO meter, and if the measurement is now OK there is a fault in the cabling or
connections. If there is still a fault please contact your distributor or OxyGuard.
Oscillating measurements
If the dissolved oxygen value in a tank with oxygen dosing swings between two values at
regular intervals, the dosing settings probably need adjusting. This can also be caused by poor
mixing of water in the tank or by unfortunate placing of the probe.
