I. Title: DEPENDENT AND INDEPENDENT VARIABLES

II. Learning Competencies: Determines the dependent and independent variables.
(Quarter 2 Week 3_M8AL-IIc-3)
 Define independent and dependent variables.
 Determine the dependent and independent variables in real-life scenarios.
 Cite examples of dependent and independent variables.
III. Instructions: This activity will help you determine what is dependent and
independent variables. You will also be able to cite examples of dependent and
independent variables on your own. Read the directions in every activity.
IV. Activities

Guide: Dependent and Independent Variables are variables in mathematical

modeling, statistical modeling and experimental sciences. You will explore more
about these variables upon going through all the activities given.

Activity 1: Define Me!

Direction: In your own words, answer the following questions in the table below.

Questions Definition

1. What is dependent variable?

2. What is independent variable?

Activity 2: “Am I Independent or Dependent”?

Directions: Determine the dependent and Independent variable in every item.

Underline the independent variable and encircle the dependent variable.

Example: The number of hours you spend working and your salary.

Answer: The number of hours you spend working and your salary.

1. The number of hours boiling and the number of ounces of water in the pot.

M8AL-IIc-3
2. The distance covered and the volume of the gasoline.
3. The number of hours studied to grade on test.
4. Height of the plant o the number of moths grown.
5. The size of the feet and the size of the shoes to wear.

Activity 3: Am I related?

Directions: Think of two quantities related to each other. Identify the independent
and dependent variables. Give as many as three examples. You can use the
previous activity as a guide to answer.

Activity 4

M8AL-IIc-3
Direction: Identify if the underlined words are dependent and independent variables.
Encircle the letter of the correct answer.

1. Time and salary. What is Time?

A. Dependent B. Independent
2. The number of hours studied to grade on test. What is grade on test?
A. Dependent B. Independent
3. Height of the plant to the number of months grown. What is height of the plant?
A. Dependent B. Independent
4. The size of feet and the size of the shoes to buy.
A. Dependent B. Independent
5. The brand of paper towel to the amount of liquid absorbed by it.
A. Dependent B. Independent
6. The height and the age.
A. Dependent B. Independent
7. Type of fertilizer given to the plant and its height.
A. Dependent B. Independent
8. The size of the room and the number of students in the class.
A. Dependent B. Independent
9. The brand of the bag you will buy and the amount of money you saved.
A. Dependent B. Independent
10. The size of your waist and the size of the pants you wear.
A. Dependent B. Independent

V. How much have you learned?
