Course/Year: BSEE-3 Subject Code: MEEN 20052 Fluid Mechanics

Week 1

Activities:
Solve the following:
1. If the °F scale is twice the °C scale, what is the reading in the Fahrenheit scale?

Solution:
(1) F = (9/5) (C) + 32 and

(2) F = (2C)

From eq. (1):

[(9C/5) + 32] = F = (2C) (from eq. 2)

(9C) + (32) (5) = (5) (2C)

(9C) + (160) = (10C)

C = 160 deg. and from eq. (2) above,

F = (2) (160) = 320 deg.

2. A water temperature rises of 18°F in the water-cooled condenser is equivalent in °C to:

Solution:
C = 5/9 (F – 32)
= 5/9 (18 – 32)
= 5/9 (-14)
= -7.78 C

3. Convert a vacuum pressure of 110 mm of mercury into absolute pressure. Atmospheric pressure is 10.5
m of water.

Solution:
Pabs = Pabs – Pv
= (10.5 m H2O abs) – [(110 mm Hgvac) (10.34 m H2Oabs/760 mm Hgabs)]
= 9.003 m H2Oabs

4. The weight of an object is 50 lb. What is its mass at standard condition?

Solution:
m = Fgk
g
= (50 lbf) (32.174 lbm . ft/lbf . s2)
32.174 ft/s2
= 50 lbm

5. What is the mass in grams and the weight in dynes and in gram-force of 12 oz salt? Local g is 9.65
m/s2, (1 lbm = 16 oz).

Solution:
a. 12 oz x 1 lbm x 453.60 g = 340.2 g
16 oz 1 lbm

b. Fg = mg/k
= (340.2 g) (965 cm/s2)
(gm) (980.66 cm/s)
gf
= 334.80 gf

c. Fg = 334.80 gf x 980.66 dynes = 328324.97 dynes

1 gf

Assessment:
Solve the following:
1. Five masses in a region where the acceleration due to gravity is 30.5 ft/s2 are as follows: m1 is 500 g of
mass; m2 weighs 800 gf; m3 weighs 15 poundals; m4 weighs 3 lbf; m5 is 0.10 slug of mass. What is the
total mass expressed?
a. in grams
b. in pounds
c. in slugs

Solution:
g = (30.5 ft/s2) (12 in/ft) (2.54 cm/in) = 929.64 cm/s2
a. m2 = Fg2k
g
= (800 gf) (980.66 gm.cm/gfs2)
929.64 cm/s2
= 843.91 gm
m3 = Fg3k
g
= 15 lbm . ft/s2
30.5 ft/s2
= (0.49 lbm) (453.6 gm/lbm)
= 222.26 gm
m4 = Fg4k
g
= (3 lbf) (32.174 lbm . ft/ lbf . s2) x (453.6 gm/lbm)
30.5 ft/s2
= 1435.49 gm

m5 = (0.10 slug) (32.174 lbm/slug) (453.6 gm/lbm)

k
= 1459.41 gm
Total mass = m1 + m2 + m3 + m4 + m5
= 500 + 843.91 + 222.26 + 1435.49 + 1459.41
= 4461.07 gm
b. Total mass = 4461.07 gm = 9.83 lbm
453.6 gm/lbm

c. Total mass = 9.83 lbm = 0.306 slug

32.174 lbm/slug
