PERMISSIBLE DEVIATIONS
IN CHEMICAL COMPOSITION FOR PRODUCT
ANALYSIS OF STEEL CASTINGS
( First Revision )

I. Scope-This standard lays down permissible variations in product analysis of steel castings
‘ram the ladle analysis as specified in the relevant Indian Standard specifications.

2. Terminology

2.0 For~the purpose of this standard, the following definitions shall apply.

2.1 Ladle Analysis - Analysis carried out on samples taken from the ladle soon after the liquid
metal has been tapped into it from the furnace.

2.2 Product Analysis - Analysis carried out on samples taken from the castings or test blocks
( separately or integrally cast ).

2.3 Low Alloy Steel Castings-Steel castings having a total alloy content up to 5 percent.

2.4 High Alloy Steel Castings - Steel castings having a total alloy content exceeding 5 percent.
Note - The definitions of low alloy and high alloy steel castings given above are for the purpose Of this Indian Standarc
only.

3. Sampling for Chemical Analysis -For product analysis, the selection and preparation of tesi
samples may be carried out in accordance with IS : 6907-l 973 ‘Methodsof sampling of steel castings’,
and 4.3 of IS : 6800-1986 ‘Technical delivery conditions for steel castings (second revision)‘, or as
agreed to between the purchaser and the manufacturer.

4. Method of Chemical Analysis -The product analysis shall be carried out in accordance wit1
the procedures laid down in the relevant Indian Standards.

5. Deviation in Chemical Composition for Product Analysis

5.1 Deviations in product analysis from the limits specified for ladle analysis in the relevant lndiar
Standards shall not exceed the values specified in Tables 1 and 2. Table 1 applies to carbon and lo\n
alloy steel castings and Table 2 appliesto high alloy steel castings.

5.2 For elements and percentage ranges of elements not covered in this standard, the permissible
deviations shall be as agreed to between the purchaser and the manufacturer.

5.3 For castings having extra large ruling section thicknesses of 300 mm and above, the deviation:
in product analysis in some cases may exceed the limits stipulated in Tables 1 and 2. ln such cases,
the permissible deviations shah be as agreed to between the purchaser and the manufacturer. In the
absence of such an agreement, the permissible deviations shall be deemed to be in accordance witf
this standard.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

This standard was first published in 1972. ln light of the experience gained since then and
to align it with the current international practices, the following main modifications have been made
in this revision:
a) The permissible deviations are defined separately for carbon and low alloy steel castings on
the one hand, and high alloy steel castings on the other.
_b) The values of permissible deviations against some elements have been reset.
This standard keeps in. view the manufacturing and trade practices followed in the country in
this field and also the permissible variations stipulated for productanalysis of wrought steel and
steel products in the relevant Indian Standards.
Attention of the purchaser is drawn to 5.2 and 5.3 to make special stipulations where relevant,
while ordering.
