Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Oral Communication is one of the core subjects of the Grade 11 students in

Lemery Colleges. It explains the nature and process of communication, delivering

speeches based on the principles of effective speech delivery and such. “This strand

focuses on the identification and development of the skills and strategies effective

listeners and speakers use to understand and interact with others. It also emphasizes

the use of higher-order thinking skills to stimulate students interest and engage them in

their own learning (The Ontario Curriculum Grade1-8, Language, pp,9-10)

It also describes different type of interaction between individual which makes

use of words and involves speaking and listening. In Oral Communication, the sender

and receiver exchange their thoughts or ideas verbally either face-to-face discussion or

through any mechanical or electrical devices. The ability to communicate effectively

through speaking is highly valued in business. Oral communication is effective when it is

clear, precise, relevant, tactful, considerate, concise informative and adapted to the

needs of the listener. The delivery of effective communication requires a speaker to

consider his or her vocal pitch, rate, and volume. It is important to incorporate changes

in vocal pitch to add emphasis and or/avoid monotony. Non verbal elements such as

posture gestures and facial expression are also important factors in developing good

oral communication skills. Good verbal communicators make frequent eye contact to

ensure understanding and to develop rapport with the listener. (Triple A Learning Table

of contents F. 2.3:4)

In today’s competitive world, oral communication skill is essential to be

developed among students to gear them with appropriate knowledge on presentations.

Being communicatively competent likewise boots marketability and viability for work in

variety of careers in the future, thus reiterates the essential of being equipped. It is clear

that if learners develop the competency they need in order to use a second language

easy and effective in the different situations they will face outside the classroom, they

need to experience how language is used as a tool of communication.

The competency level is a person’s ability to fulfil a specific role or function.

Competence refers to the skills and characteristics that enable you to perform a job. If

someone can perform a required task at a targeted level of proficiency, they are

competent.Competency grows with experience and training. A competence is a bundle

of cognitively controlled abilities or skills in some particular domain. It implies both

knowledge and the ability and disposition to solve problems. It is essentially acquired

through practice and experience. It is assessed according to some established

standard. Since we are concerned with linguistic competence, we may say that from a

general point of view, a person’s linguistic competence is, first and foremost, part of his

personality. On the other hand, it is certainly one of those personal competencies that

are highly relevant to professional life. As a consequence, linguistic competence is one

of the central concepts in applied linguistics, and there it has always been construed in

such a way as to be applicable to professional life.

Students use and develop competencies when they encounter unfamiliar or

challenging situations. Competencies help students draw and build upon what they

know, how they think and what they can do. In school, students develop and apply

competencies through subject-area content and learning experiences. Alberta’s

curriculum promotes development of the following competencies, which are a

streamlimed expression of the competencies identified in the Ministerial Order on

Student Learning(#001/2013).

Oral Communication is a better subject to the students in Lemery Colleges.

Some students has a fear from mistake, shyness, anxiety and lack of confidence but

this subject teach us in how can we express ourselves without feeling those. As we

encounter the subject, we know that it will help us on how can we cope up with this

subject. It will help you to boost your self-confidence through joing a particular activities

involving Oral Communication. It boost our language competency level through

widening our vocabulary or words that we do not know. This subject will help you on

how can you survive using English language and on how can you apply the things

we’ve learned from the subject.

Research Aim

In this study, the researchers aim to determine what are the impacts of Oral

Communication in the language competency level of the selected grade 12 students in

Lemery Colleges. It aims to find the current state of the students in applying what they

learn in the said subject in terms of speaking. The researchers want to know how those

impacts affect the student’s language competency. The researchers also want to know

not only the impacts but also the benefits that the students can get in learning the Oral

Communication subject. The researchers chose this topic because it is one of the core

subjects of Grade 12 students in Lemery Colleges.

Statement of the Problem

Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in the terms of:

1.1 age;

1.2 sex;

1.3 strand;

1.4 grade; and

1.5 section?

2. What are the effects of Oral Communication Subject in the language competency

level of students in Lemery Colleges?

3. What are the benefits of Oral Communication subject to the students?

4. What are the challenges faced by the students in the subject Oral Communication?

5. What are the suggested ways to enhance our competency level through Oral

Communication?

Theoretical Framework

Goh and Burns (2012, p.172) also suggest that an effective way to plan an

effective speaking program is by identifying the learners needs Therefore, having

sufficient understanding about the learning context and characteristics of the learners

will certainly beneficial to identify what language learning theories or techniques would

be most relevant to the development of their oral communication skills. Therefore, this

article will address some of key concept to implement in this context. These include:

interaction and correction, varying learning activities inside or outside the classroom for

fluency development, a combination of multiple structural frameworks, using emerging

technologies, and assessment and evaluation.

With regard to Oral Communication in Context teaching, simulation is a more

recent strategy which aims to achieve communicative competence rather than

grammatical competence. This means that performance and actual output are

represented in one’s actual real life situations. Many teachers want their students to

apply the book knowledge to the real world, to see how the abstract concepts and

theories play out in the real world, to be able to experience real-world processes, and to

become motivated to become involved in the real-world processes that are discussed in

class. Through this, teachers may conclude the long-term effect of their lessons to their

students.

Language Competence has sometimes been used as an idealized notion which

somehow embodies the collective knowledge of a speech community in the person of

an ideal speaker-hearer. However, the basic notion is the competence of an individual

5
Lemery Colleges, Inc.
A. Bonifacio St.,Brgy. Bagong Sikat, Lemery, Batangas

in a language. If the language in question is not the native language, it is taken for

granted that the person may be proficient in the language to some degree. The

standard is then generally set by native competence. However, native competence is

itself a matter of degree. Consequently, objective criteria are required by which one may

assess the competence of a person in one or more languages by a common standard.

This presupposes a notion of linguistic competence which has empirical import. The

paper tries to articulate a concept of linguistic competence which can be converted into

language tests. A test was devised on this basis and administered to groups of native

and non-native speakers of German. The results of the experiment suggest that there is

no difference in principle between native and foreign language competence, whether on

theoretical or empirical grounds.

Murray and Christison (2011: 140),state that learning is a process that brings

together cognitive, emotional, and environmental influences for the purpose of making

changes in one’s knowledge, skills, values, and worldviews. Learning also refers to a

relatively permanent change in behavior as a result of practice or experience.

The other component that is very crucial and it will show us the speaking ability

of some bodies from the quality of the vocabularies that can express in conversation.

According to Hornby vocabulary is the total number of the words in a language it means

that vocabulary plays that important role in speaking. Speaking is an activity of

reproducing words orally. It indicates that there is a process of exchanging ideas

between speaker and listener. Hornby says that fluency is able to speak or write a

language of perform an action smoothly or expressed in a smooth and accurate way. In

speaking, fluency makes us easy to understand the meaning.

The Common European of Reference for Languages (CEFR, 2011) are

considered to design the appropriate level identification process. Linguistic, textual,

functional, sociolinguistic and strategic competences are types of language knowledge

that specialists involved in assessing speaking competencies.

Ahmad and Dababneh (2010) found that a positive communication environment

provides opportunities to students to learn how to communicate, and thus, have better

communication skills. Therefore, students need to be given opportunities to

communicate in order to be better prepared for the job market after their studies.

Communication is more effective if the receiver (of the information) can understand and

practice the skills. Further, communication will be more meaningful if the physical,

spiritual and social factors are taken into account during the communication process.

Rodiah Idris (2010) proposes that communication as a non-verbal skill, giving

feedback, presenting ideas verbally and in written form, doing presentations and

negotiating to achieve a goal and getting support/agreement.

Guo (2013) said that presentation skill address the following aspects, include

communication skill in verbal and non verbal, content, integration of technology, and

engaging the audience. It makes the audience easily to understand the topic which is

delivered.

Communication is an exchange of ideas between people either orally or in writing

it is also an exchange of meanng and understanding, meaning is central to

communication(Rahman,2010) it is symbolic because it involves not only words but also

symbols and guestures that accompany the spoken words because symbolic action is

not limited to Verbal Communication.

Speaking skill is one’s important skill to improve English proficiency from the very

beginning of language learning. Speaking is one of the most important language skills.

This skill can be developed and enhanced as an effective means of communication

(Morozova, 2013).

Kayaoğlu and Sağlamel (2013) found several causes of language anxiety. They

are (1) linguistic difficulty in the form of lack of vocabulary, lack of grammatical

understanding and bad pronunciation; (2) cognitive challenges in the form of feelings of

fear can not communicate, fear of failing the test, the fear of making mistakes, shame to

fail in front of others, low self-esteem; (3) lack of understanding of the original language;

(4) teacher’s role and competitiveness.

Foreign Studies

According to Australian Journal of teacher education 37(1)3,2012, the result of a

study that aimed to identify the problems of Oral English skills of ESL(English as a

second language) students at a tertiary teacher training institutions in Hong Kong, the

gap in our understanding of the difficulties ESL students encountered in their Oral

English development in the context of a bachelor of education (English Language)

programmed insufficient opportunities to speak English in lectures and tutorials lack of a

focus on language improvement in the curriculum and the input-poor environment for

spoken communication in English outside class apparently contributed to arrange of

problems that closely related to sociocultural institutional and intrapersonal context in

which indivdual ESL students found themselves the study lead us to question the

effectiveness of the knowledge and pedagogy- based ESL teacher training curriculum,

they also point to a need to incorporate a sufficient intensive language improvements

components in the current teacher preparation program.

In a particular study of Douglas Carnine, P David Pearson, Elizabeth Moje,

Cynthia Greenleaf Science 328(5977), we use conceptual and empirical lenses to

examine synergies between inquiry and literacy teaching and learning.

Doan Linh Chi 2011, this study deals with guidance of the learners improvement

of speaking skills. Practice is considered an important part of language learning.

Students are always encouraged to practice as much and as often as possible.

However, some students do not know how to practice well and feel disappointed as

practice does not always help them make much progress in their studies.

B. Local Literature and Studies

Local Literature

The definition of oral communicating ablity “Exactly speaking, one’s ability of oral

communicating includes linguistic competence, communicative competence and

tactictical competence.”

Linguistic competence, which is the base of oral communication. We get this

ability from concrete teaching activities. This is to say we get correct information from

teachers and books. These things including pronounciation, intonation, grammar,

vocabulary(Never just memorize single English words. Learn the whole sentences and

phrases that contain the new words so we may know how to use the words), etc. In this

11
Lemery Colleges, Inc.
A. Bonifacio St.,Brgy. Bagong Sikat, Lemery, Batangas

step, teachers from English native spoken country are very important and advanced

teaching materials are essential.

Communicative competence, which is distillation of those information we have

got. We study spoken English so as to make oral communications, so the importance of

oral English study should be: Fluency, Accuracy, and Appropriateness. That is to say,

we have to pay more attention to practical communicating ability instead of only laying

emphasis on the grammatical correctness. So, it needs us to master the rules of

speaking, to know the cultural characteristics well, to express properly and to use

suitable styles under different situations or in special social occasions.

Tactical competence means to use communication skills and to overcome

troubles caused by language shortcoming by using some other methods. Excellent

personality is one of decisive factors in this step of oral English, staid persistence,

patience; self-confidence and determination are badly needed. And what’s the most

important is one can act according the circumstances.

The Philippine ESL Journal is referred to a publication which aims at providing

online access to all those involve in the research, teaching and learning of English as an

international language. The English as second language Journal studies the structure

and development of English across the Philippines and in particular, its relationship to

an effect on local culture and local Filipino Language.

RodiahIdris(2010) proposes that communication as a non-verbal skill, giving

feedback, presenting ideas verbally and in written form, doing presentations and

12
Lemery Colleges, Inc.

negotiating to achieve a goal and getting support/agreement. In our globalized world,

university student need to master communication skills in different cultural contexts.

Local Studies

Zanaton haji Iksan et al./Procedia- Social and Behavioural Sciences 59(2012)71-

7675 written feedback can be measured through the availability to translate an idea

and give meaning through written work. At the university level written information

should be in multiple languages, specially English and BahasaMelayu(BM). This study

found that the level of competency to communicate (verbally and in written form) in

English was lowered compare to the competency to communicate in BM[BI (85.10%):

BM (92.05%). This result is consistent with the findings of MasitaMisdi et al.(2010),

where she reported that the level of competency in the English Language among

students at institutions of higher learning in Malaysia is not satisfactory. Social

communication, the third construct of communication skills is social communication.

There are four sub-constructs for social communication, which are negotiating,

language, culture, and be politeness. The sub- construct negotiates need the students

to be able to discuss in various languages and cultural settings. This type of

communication must be carried out humbly and politely. This can be practised during

group discussion for a group project or assignments that consists of group members

from different social and cultural background. Students need to discuss and negotiate

the course of the project where everyone agrees upon. Another skill that is important in

being able to communicate is to be able to initiate a discussion, able to criticism, giving

cooperation and able to make concise conclusions on the discussions. This study found

13
Lemery Colleges, Inc.
A. Bonifacio St.,Brgy. Bagong Sikat, Lemery, Batangas

that negotiating skill still need to be improved among university students compared to

the sub-construct culture, language and be politeness. Social communication also

involves interpersonal communication, which is the ability to conduct face-to-face

interactions. This type of communication involves the ability to cooperate and negotiate

with people from different background (Ihmeideh et al. 2010). This type of

communication also involves social management skills. Although the overall

communication skills among university students are good, there are still certain aspects

that are not up to the expectations of potential employers (MasitahMisdi, et al. 2010).

Therefore, skills under a few sub constructs that need to be improved. Communication

skills should be cultivated in every course and lectures must play a more significant.

Lecturers must give constructive feedback on students presentations and

communication skills wherever possible. On the other hand, students must actively

participate in every activity that develops their communication skills. Llmeidah et al.

(2010)reported that the attitudes towards communication skills among university

students are high. This means that is easier for universities to develop their

communication skills through appropriate activities. Positive environments for

communication provide opportunities for students to practice their communication skills

and participate in active learning. With this, lecturers should create as many learning

activities as possible to stimulate the provide opportunity for students to practice and

horn their communication skills.

C. Synthesis

The literature that communication is an exchange of an ideas between people

either orally in writing it is also an exchange of meaning and understanding meaning is

central to communication(Rahman, 2010) it symbolic because it involves not only words

but also symbols and gestures that accompany the spoken words because symbolic

action is not limited to verbal communication. He further define this “an interactive

process”. Where two communication agents, the sender and the receiver are involved in

the process of communication. In this research, both listening and speaking skills are

considered OCSS both supports each other in the development of English skills and

without either OC remain meaningless Oral Communication cannot be simply “studied”

by reading it needs to be planned, strategized, practiced and assessed preferable in an

“authentic setting”(Chan, 2011)

This foreign literature according to Rahman, 2010 states that people began to

oral writing to formulate and also communicate to others, it has meaning and

truthfulness to ensure that there is a communication between people and their

surroundings, also according to Can, 2011, it uses symbolic and objectivity to be more

fluent in communicating people. It uses fie skills but it focuses on speaking and listening

only. We consider that speaking and listening is important to improve our skills and

knowledge to produce one conversation. The interactive process is communication is

also important just like the sender and the receiver because when we start the

conversation we should proceed first to sender to provide and process one of the most

important aspects to eliminate and give planned to assess the objectives of one person

15
Lemery Colleges, Inc.
A. Bonifacio St.,Brgy. Bagong Sikat, Lemery, Batangas

As tasked to research on the problem in reading and communicating education in

the Philippines PC(2013)found three problems namely (1) Philippines is a nation of non-

readers, (2) insufficient structural supports like reading materials and teachers, and (3)

malnourished students. These problems were said to be contributing factors in the long

run, to Filipinos in being incompetents workers, locally or globally, and majority of

Filipinos in being competent workers, locally or globally and majority of Filipinos to

remain below or in the poverty line.

The differences between these two literatures are first, in the foreign literature it

tackles about the importance of Oral Communication to the English skills also, the

things we need to considered to be more valuable to the respondents, while in the local

literature, it tackles about the common problems that the students don’t imply the things

that we need to communicate necessarily.

The similarity between the two literatures is that both articles are important to

improve and be more reliable to understand the topic.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, research locale, participants of the

study, data collection procedure, research instruments, ethical consideration, and data

analysis.

Research Design

In this study, the researchers employed the descriptive and qualitative design of

research because it is nearly related to its purpose and concern.

Descriptive research involves the description, recording, analysis and

interpretation of the present nature, composition or processes of phenomena which

focuses on prevailing conditions, or how a person, group or thing behaves or functions

in the present. It often involves some type of comparison or contrast. In other words,

descriptive research maybe defined as a purposive process of gathering, analyzing,

classifying and tabulating data about prevailing conditions, practices, beliefs, processes,

trends and cause effect relationships and then making adequate and accurate

interpretation about such data with or without the aid of statistical methods. (Calderon,

2012)

Qualitative research is exploratory or interrogative research and tries to get

“under the surface”. “The aim is to gather insights into how people live; what they do;

how they use things; or what they need in their everyday or professional lives.“

(Government Design Service Manual, 2016). Ashley Crossman (2019) stated that

17
Lemery Colleges, Inc.
A. Bonifacio St.,Brgy. Bagong Sikat, Lemery, Batangas

qualitative research is a type of social science research that collects and works with

non-numerical data and that seeks to interpret meaning from these data that help

understand social life through the study of targeted populations or places. People often

frame it in opposition to quantitative research, which uses numerical data to identify

large-scale trends and employs statistical operations to determine causal and

correlative relationships between variables. Within sociology, qualitative research is

typically focused on the micro-level of social interaction that composes everyday life,

whereas quantitative research typically focuses on macro-level trends and phenomena.

The researchers believed that these two methods are the best to use since they

wanted to find out information regarding the present situation especially the impact of

Oral Communication in language competency level of a students.

Research Locale

The researchers decided to conduct their study in Lemery Colleges where they

took ten respondents from different strand of Grade 12 students. Lemery Colleges is

located at A. Bonifacio St. Bagong Sikat, Lemery, Batangas. We the reaserchers

choose the students in Lemery College (LCIANs) because they have a Oral

Communication subject and they are capable on answering the question based on their

own experience. However, we the researchers must give a great study on the topic and

validate them using mediated interview that is done through social media.

Participants of the Study

Having a good quality of attitude reflects on the students of Lemery Colleges.

They have a heart that's full of love to their environment, especially when it comes to

humanity. Here are some characteristics of a good person.

 Honesty- Honesty is a facet of moral character that connotes positive and

virtuous attributes such as integrity, truthfulness, straightforwardness, including

straightforwardness of conduct, along with the absence of lying, cheating, theft,

etc. Honesty also involves being trustworthy, loyal, fair, and sincere.

 Kindness- Kindness is defined as the quality of being friendly, generous, and

considerate.

 Loyalty- Loyalty is an ethical trait of faithfulness and devotion to your loved ones,

your friends, and anyone with whom you have a trusted relationship.

 Integrity- Integrity is a personal trait that has strong moral principles and core

values and then conducting your life with those as your guide.

 Respectfulness- You offer basic respect as a sign of your value for the worth of

all people and your ability to accept the inherent flaws we all possess.

 Generosity- This good quality is willing to offer time, energy, efforts, emotions,

words, or assets without the expectation of something in return.

 Politeness- This character trait is knowledgeable of basic good manners,

common courtesies, and etiquette, and are willing to apply those to all people

you encounter.

19
Lemery Colleges, Inc.
A. Bonifacio St.,Brgy. Bagong Sikat, Lemery, Batangas

 Reliability- This character quality can be consistently depended upon to follow

through on your commitments, actions, and decisions. You do what you say you

will do.

The researchers choose Grade 12 students of Lemery Colleges. First, the basis

why we choose Grade 12 students of Lemery Colleges is because they have accurate

answers that we can get from them through critical thinking and evaluation. Second,

they are the students who already tackled Oral Communication as their subject. Lastly,

we want to offer important information in the next generation who will need the data for

their assignments, projects, as well as the reference for further research.

Data Collection Procedures

The researchers make a fluent title for their study. The researchers propose a

title to the Thesis Adviser, Miss Romelia R. Macatangay. The title was approved to the

Executive Director of Lemery Colleges, Dr. Marifel M. Salazar.

Grade 12 students will have a big help to support in the study, because students

already tackle Oral Communication last school year. The researchers went to different

websites to gather references or resources that will fit to the study. The information or

data gathered were utilize and organize in formal form. The interview questions were

presented to the thesis adviser for approval, comments, suggestions, clarifications, and

revisions were considered. Finally, the final draft was prepared and multiplied enough

for the specific respondents.

20
Lemery Colleges, Inc.
A. Bonifacio St.,Brgy. Bagong Sikat, Lemery, Batangas

While conducting an interview using social media, we the interviewer asked

questions and follow ups to let the topic be on its proper place. Aside from that,

conclusions in the end are done.

Research Instruments

The researchers used the interview questions through social media to obtain the

data and information about the impacts of Oral Communication in the language

competency level of the selected grade 12 students that should match to the current

research.

Ethical Consideration

It is imperative that ethical issues are considered during the formulation of the

evaluation plan. Ethical consideration during evaluation include:

•Informed Consent

Informed consent means that the person participating in the evaluation is fully

informed about the evaluation being conducted. Participants need to be made aware of

the purposes of the project who or what group is founding it, how the findings will be

used, if there are any potential adverse impacts of their participation and will have

access to their findings. The main purpose of informed consent is that the participant is

able to make an informed decisions as to whether they will participate in the evaluation

or not. Additional information should also be provided in the event that the participant

becomes distressed in any way during their participation.

•Do not harm

21
Lemery Colleges, Inc.
A. Bonifacio St.,Brgy. Bagong Sikat, Lemery, Batangas

Harm can be both physical and/or psychological and therefore can be in the form

of stress, pain, anxiety, diminishing self-esteem or an invasion of privacy. It is

imperative that the evaluation process not in any way harm (unintended or otherwise)

participants.

•Confidentiality

Confidentiality means that any identifying information is not made available to, or

accessed by anyone but the program coordinator. Confidentiality also ensures such

identifying information is excluded from any reports or published documents. Given that

there are often small numbers in peer based programs, it is very important to consider

how reports are worded to ensure that there is no opportunity for people to be identified

even though names are not used.

The Data Privacy Act (DPA), or Republic Act No. 10173 was passed by the

Philippines Congress in 2012 and finally implemented five years later in 2016. RA

10173 assures the “free flow of information to promote innovation and growth”(Republic

Act. No. 10173, Ch. 1, Sec. 2) while protecting the users’ fundamental rights to privacy.

RA 10173 protects and maintains the right of customers to confidentiality by setting a

legal list of rules for companies to regulate the collection, handling, and disposal of all

personal information. Companies legally responsible for keeping their customers’ data

protected from third parties or any form of misuse, internally or externally. he Act applies

to any process of personal data by anyone in government or private sectors. All

personal data must have legitimate reasons for collection as well as should be clear to

both parties giving and receiving information. With that being said, all collection must be

22
Lemery Colleges, Inc.
A. Bonifacio St.,Brgy. Bagong Sikat, Lemery, Batangas

done with the customer the customers’ proper consent. All personal information used

must also be relevant solely used for its intended and state purposes. Companies must

protect customer information from collection to proper disposal, avoiding access from

unauthorized parties. “‘Personal information’” refers to any information, whether

recorded in a material form or not, from which the identity of an individual is apparent or

can be reasonably and directly ascertained by the entity holding the information, or

when put together with other information would directly and certainly identify an

individual” (Republic Act. No. 10173, Ch. 1, Sec. 3).

Data Analysis

Frequency counting was used for clearer interpretation and presentation of data

gathered regarding the title “IMPACTS OF ORAL COMMUNICATION SUBJECT IN

THE LANGUAGE COMPETENCY LEVEL OF THE SELECTED GRADE 12

STUDENTS IN LEMERY COLLEGES S.Y. 2020-2021”

This study was interpreted using the percentage formula only on the demographic

profile of the respondents as it is included in the research.

The formula was:

P= f × 100

where:

P=percentage

Other data gathered in this research were presented in a narrative form because

this study adapted IMRAD format (Qualitative Research Design). Moreover, it is

expected to use verbal expressions or language in presenting the data gathered

throughout the research.
