HALDEMAN-JULIUS COLLECTORS CLUB

CORVALLIS, OREGON
W
elcome to the first issue of Big Blue Newsletter — a quarterly journal
dedicated to the study of the thousands of pamphlets and books pub-
lished by the company of Emanuel Haldeman-Julius of Girard, Kansas.
This small-circulation zine will be the official publication of The Haldeman-Julius
Collectors Club and will appear four times a year, generally in a 32 page format. This
is your journal, please write for it!
This first edition of Big Blue is a special theme issue, containing a complete
listing of the Haldeman-Julius Little Blue Books (“LBBs”), listed by book number.
By “Little Blue Books” is meant the entire array of Appeal to Reason and Haldeman-
Julius pocket books — pamphlets approximately 5 inches in height which appeared
beginning in 1919 under various names, including Appeal Pocket Series, People’s
Pocket Series, Appeal’s Pocket Series, Pocket Series, Ten Cent Pocket Series, Five
Cent Pocket Series, and Little Blue Books. “LBBs” is a generic name for all, regard-
less of the actual series name printed on the cover.
Often times (but not always) first edition LBBs included a copyright date up
front, a date which was generally (but not always) removed from the printing plates
when the title was subsequently reprinted. A great deal of research remains to be
done before we are able to date each individual reprint with anything approaching
certainty. It is safe to assume that the study of these reprints — which made use of a
variety of colors of cardstock, colors of ink, cover designs and typography, etc. —
will provide a fruitful field for research by members of the H-JCC.
The LBBs are listed here numerically, with the inclusion of a date of publica-
tion or an estimated date of publication whenever possible. Dates in brackets which
are followed by a “c.” for “circa” are believed to be correct plus-or-minus 1 year.
Publication dates which I was not able to estimate with confidence to within a year
of issue have been left blank. I would like to make it one of the first tasks of the H-
JCC to clean up these dates of issue, changing “circa” dates into exact dates of pub-
lication and providing dates for those titles which are not known. I’m sure there are
no shortage of typographical errors that have slipped into print here as well. This first
edition of the LBB Handlist is an early effort to get the research ball rolling, a work
in progress, rather than the finished product of protracted scholarship.
Well over 200 numbers were “reused” by Haldeman-Julius — when one title
was put out of print for whatever reason, another was published using the same book
number. These alternate types are designated with the suffix “-A” or “-B” or some-
times “-C” and “-D.” The total count of LBB titles here is 2127.
This will make a handy checklist for collectors and will serve as a good starting
point for future research. This handlist would not have been possible without the
pioneering research of others, particularly work published on the internet by the
Leonard Axe Library of the University of Pittsburgh (Kansas) as well as the fine study
published in 1970 in The Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America by Richard
Colles Johnson and G. Thomas Tanselle. Grateful acknowledgment is hereby made.
Please send notice of typographical errors, erroneous dates of publication, and
information clarifying dates of publication to the Editor:
